I have always liked cats. The farm cats at my grandparents' were my first interactions. And for whatever reason, they liked me too. I was allowed to pet them and they liked to choose me as a place for a nap when I sat on the bench in front of the house and read.

So I always dreamed of having cats of my own.

Well, and again they came as a pair. Capi and Speedy.

Speedy, whose eyes I had fallen in love with. Who lived under the bed when he arrived. Touching or even petting? Thanks, but no thanks. It got better and meanwhile he thinks cuddling is great (even if he doesn't understand that you can be cuddled better if you don't always run away). He also gets along with everything that doesn't try to eat him.

And Capi, who moved in more by chance than by design. Interestingly enough, Capi has fulfilled several roles. On the one hand, he was cuddlier, even if in the rather prickly way I knew from the farm cats. On the other hand, he fulfilled my childhood dream, at least to some extent, because when he lay in the sun, his black fur turned a chocolate colour. Capi became my soul cat.

That one part I chose awakened or reawakened my love for their kind, while the other part, which was added more by chance, has ensured that this love will never fade.

Because they have left a special imprint on my soul. One that is not entirely theirs alone, because they have always come in pairs.

I had pets when I was very small, but actually I would rather say my parents had pets just because they wanted to please me.

It was always just one at a time.

And then, for a long time, none at all. That was the worst time in my childhood.

With the pets I consciously chose, whose acquisition, moving in and everything else was my own responsibility alone, I recognise a pattern in retrospect.

The first ones always came as a pair.

The unplanned part of the pair becomes the secret number one.

You only find the one part only once in this character version. (a special edition, so to speak)

With the guinea pigs, it was Berry and Ryuu.

Berry, who remained sitting very cool on a stone, while all the other inhabitants of the enclosure had fled when I entered. Who looked at me as if to say, "Ah, good, you're finally here, can we go then? I'm ready"

Berry became my mum's favourite, and I never saw or found another piggy who behaved like him. To this day my mum and I laugh that Berry was a gentleman. If he had been able, he would have worn a monocle, a cylinder and a walking cane. When he ate, he sorted his food and munched neatly without soiling himself. And afterwards he cleaned himself immediately. One has to be presentable.

And Ryuu, on the other hand, who had the misfortune to tumble out of a crowded tube right at my feet.

The little creature who probably thought I was going to eat him became my favourite. His favourite place was on my shoulder, snuggled up to my neck (or maybe he was just trying to cut off the blood supply to my brain). Always first at mealtimes and best of all sitting in the middle of the food so you could reach everywhere. A new housemate? No problem, come here, let's be friends. Ryuu, everyone's darling.
