Virgil’s words had cleaved her heart in two, and instead of leaving her to grieve and mend, letting her pull herself back together, he had to insist on showing his irritating, stupidly handsome face, much to Irene’s dismay.

He might as well be kicking her wounded heart around rather than that tin can, for she was sure it would make a much less annoying noise.”
