I mean, face it…she’s always partly wanted to be you. And in a way, I think this was her screwed up way of, for one night, kind of pretending she was you.
The Wicked King excerpt by Holly Black (The Folk Of The Air, #2)
(major spoilers for The Cruel Prince below; sharing this here because everyone deserves to know about this omg)
———
We danced once before, at the coronation of Prince Dain. Before the murdering began. Before I took Cardan prisoner at knifepoint. I wonder if he is thinking of it when he spins me around the Milkwood.
He might not be particularly practiced with a blade, but as he promised the hag’s daughter, he’s a skilled dancer. I let him steer me through steps I doubtless would have fumbled. My heart is racing and my skin is slicked with sweat.
Papery moths fly above our heads, circling up as though tragically drawn to the light of the stars.
“Whatever you do to me,” I say, too angry to stay quiet. “I can do worse to you.”
“Oh,” he says, fingers tight on mine. “Do not think I forget that for a moment. You’d never allow it.”
“Then why?” I demand.
“You believe I planned your humiliation?” he laughs. “Me? That sounds like work.”
“I don’t care if you did or not,” I tell him, too angry to make sense of my feelings. “I just care that you enjoyed it.”
“And why shouldn’t I delight to see you squirm? You tricked me,” Cardan says. “You played me for a fool and now I am the King of Fools.”
“The High King of Fools,” I say, sneer in my voice. Our gaze meets and there’s a shock of recognition, of mutual understanding that our bodies are pressed too close. I am conscious of my skin, of the sweat beading on my lip, of the slide of my thighs against one another. I am aware of the warmth of his neck beneath my twined fingers, of the prickly brush of his hair and how I want to sink my hands into it. I inhale the scent of him — moss and oak wood and leather. I stare at his treacherous mouth and imagine it on me.
Everything about this is wrong. Around us, the revel is resuming. Some of the Court glances our way, because some of the Court always looks to the High King, but Locke’s game is at an end.
Go back to the palace, Cardan had said and I’d ignored the warning.
(more here) go read it! i’m wayyy too excited for this
Prince Cardan
from The cruel prince
“Oh, he’d like to make you believe he’s our leader, but it’s more that Nicasia likes power, I like dramatics, and Valerian likes violence. Cardan can provide us with all three, or at least excuses for all three.”

“This is what you wanted, wasn’t it?” he asks.
“What you sacrificed everything for. Go on.
It’s all yours.”
Unbecoming Recap
It’s officially September which means, we’ve finished The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer and are starting The Evolution of Mara Dyer! Yay!!
Under the cut, I’ll be giving a brief recap of the happenings of Unbecoming (mainly for those who can’t/don’t have time to re read before The Becoming of Noah Shaw comes out. I got you)
IF YOU’D LIKE TO JOIN @iliveinbooks AND I IN RE-READING, YOU CAN CLICK HEEREEEE.
Some spoilers below. And maybe some things to discuss?
I'm going to add my quick review of the book below:
Why are these my favorite books? It ticks every box and then some for me. Angsty heroine? Check. Brooding love interest with an accent? Check. Ouija board? Check. Mystery and death? Check check check.
When I picked up Unbecoming I discovered the YA heroine (sometimes anti-heroine) I always wanted. Mara isn't a bad person but her morals are grey at best especially when it involves someone she loves which I think is something VERY relatable. She has trouble bringing herself to fully feel remorseful after causing a death.
When Mara meets Noah there is no insta love. She doesn't have time for him and his notorious games but Mara (and me) fall prey to his charm anyway. Noah's many layers foil Mara perfectly and this is why they are my otp!
Don't get me started on the family dynamic! Finally! Siblings and involved parents!! I will never stop raving about Daniel and Maras relationship. I love them together so much and maybe it's because it reminds me of me and my brother but I love being able to relate to the characters in my book!!! (More on this and why Daniel and Mara always make me cry in book 2 later)
I wish I could go back and read this book for the first time again. I was so confused and stressed and on the edge of my seat and I have not felt that way since with a book. Michelle does such a good job of making you not trust Mara while also wanting to believe her. In my re reads now I enjoy all the flags I left in the book that let me read deeper in to the clues that become clear in later books (number sequences anyone?)
What did you guys think during your reread?? Anything you didn't notice before or just feel like reliving? Join our conversation!!!
