Okay, hear me out: Hux with ADHD
Hux who schedules reminders in his datapad or writes out notes to leave on his desk so he doesn’t forget things. It’s not that he doesn’t find the task or information important; it’s just the fact that the minute his focus is required elsewhere, he forgets about it.
Hux choosing to spend the majority of his time on the bridge or patrolling the ship because it allows him to freely pace and fidget. Sitting in a quiet office makes him feel trapped, itchy, and agitated.
Hux who, after being verbally briefed, always requests the information in writing. Even though he can hear the information being relayed, his brain struggles to interpret and process it at the speed required. Long briefings? He’s tuned in at the start, but his mind quickly begins to wander. A particularly loud shift on the bridge? Hux finds himself struggling to decipher actual words from the meaningless background noise.
Hux who finds some symptom relief from stims, but at a cost: appetite loss, dehydration, trouble sleeping, and bruxism. The crash as the stim wears off leaves him irritable and anxious.
Hux constantly comparing himself to those around him and feeling inadequate. Hux who has been shamed his entire life for being "inefficient" or "too slow." Brendol and his colleagues using Hux’s cognitive and attentional deficits to publicly humiliate him.
Hux who has unfinished schematics and diagrams scattered all around his chambers. He’s engaged and enthusiastic as he begins to draft each one but, inevitably, his interest fades.
When Hux was a young boy at the Academy, he had a habit of interrupting and speaking out of turn, often talking over his peers and instructors. This lack of impulse control resulted in frequent corporal punishment at the hands of Brendol.
The very first time Hux interrupts Ren during one of their more civilized conversations, he feels his blood turn to ice. His heart rate spikes and he braces himself for a physical blow. It never comes. Instead, Ren doesn’t even bat an eye. In that moment, Hux realizes they may have more in common than he originally thought.
