I love these kinds of princesses!

I’ve mentioned this several times before, but it bears repeating. A girl’s introduction and buy-in to the patriarchy begins with Disney princesses and with her barbies. Even if their feminist mothers don’t want them to be influenced like this, girls will watch these movies and play with barbie dolls at their friends’ houses until the mother finally gives in. The plot arcs–fair maid is discovered, is hidden away, is found, is rescued from her captivity, and then love triumphs all and she’s conquered. The above illustration is never seen in the movies but it is implied. This is what happens to the conquest after the gains have been consolidated and all banners have been planted. Girls intuit this, even if they can’t form the actual visuals or understand the full implications, and it lays the groundwork for their own internal relationship/story-quests going forward. The reason it resonates so deeply and so early–it’s beyond cultural. There has to be some kind of hard wiring in a girl’s brain that these stories reach. Feminists can complain and bemoan how Disney models a culture of female dependency for girls, or how barbies set up impossible beauty standards for girls to live up to. They may as well shake their fists at the ocean and scream for the tides not to come in.
