"What the fxck do you mean she said she doesn't know me?!"
The sharp sound of metal hitting the table rang off the glass of the interrogation room 3. Jeff's nails gritted against the table, the sound making the younger officer's eye twitch and his teeth grind. But his boss on his right just sat very comfortably in his chair, facing Jeff's. The badge pinned crookedly to his shirt spelt the name 'Reyes'.
"The witnesses were clear in their statement," Reyes said, taking a lazy sip of his coffee. "You cannot invent a lie when all your family members agree 100% about everything. And for the woman you have harassed two days ago, she claims many times that she didn't know you. And we believe that."
"You believe that stupid whxre?!" Jeff scoffed, eyes blazing. "I'm her fxcking boyfriend!"
Reyes scoffed, "No, you're not."
"What the—"
Before Jeff could let out another curse, the officer opened a file, pulled out a picture and tossed it to him across the table. A blonde-haired young woman with ocean blue eyes and fair, peachy skin looked back at them. Jeff didn't recognise her.
"Who the fxck is that?!"
"Jane Todd Richardson." Reyes introduced, "A 22-year-old store cashier who happened to live in the same neighbourhood as yours. She has claimed many complaints about your behaviours towards her—both physical and emotional abuse. She wanted to stay silent during the two recent years of your disappearance. Now that you've finally been identified, that automatically files in your criminal record." He tilted his chin towards Jane's picture; "That's your girlfriend. Or rather... your fiancée."
Something shifted behind Jeff's eyes—not doubt, but more like static, or a channel refusing to tune in.
"Let's recap from the very beginning, shall we?" Reyes began. "Your full name's Jeffrey Alan Woods. You are 25 years old. Born on June 2, 1989. You grew up with your parents and younger brother, Liu Vicki Woods, in Mandeville. At the age of 16, you dropped out of school and started working part-time jobs to fill up your little piggy bank. That's when you met your future girlfriend, Jane Richardson. You both moved to Slidell and lived there for three years. On January 2nd, you proposed to her. On January 3rd, Jane reported your disappearance and a search team was sent for you. The same year, on January 7th, your case was closed. Jane came back from Slidell to live with her parents in Mandeville. You didn't show up for two years until three days earlier, Saturday, September 20th 2014, when a group of college students called the police at 9:11 pm after you assaulted them."
Jeff was literally banging his forehead against the table, spitting out curses like: "Fxckers! Bxtch! I'm gonna fxcking explode! I should have killed them all!".
But that didn't stop the Reyes from continuing.
"The same night, around 9:30 pm, you broke into a woman and her son's house, assaulted them with a knife before you were arrested at 9:47 pm." Reyes finished, crossing his arms and relaxing into his chair. "Do you agree with the report, or do you want to lie again?"
Jeff grinted his teeth audibly. His lips were bleeding from how hard he was biting down on them, his knuckles turning white as he clenched his fists tightly, dirty nails biting his palms harshly. His eyes stayed closed for a moment, as if he was forcing himself to accept his situation. They thought he had finally calmed down and that he would finally submit, but what came later was completely unexpected.
Jeff started laughing—It was not a normal laugh, but inhuman and animalistic, messy and ugly. His head fell backwards as his wheezing turned louder. The younger officer, named Joshua, stiffened at the unexpected hysteria. Reyes, however, only looked back at Jeff with pure disgust; He rolled his eyes and took another sip of his drink, totally unbothered.
When Jeff was finally coming down from the high, he let out a long breath and shook his head in amusement. "Ha... I can't believe she set me up this dirty."
Abruptly, Reyes threw Jeff's case file across the table. "That's it," he snapped, "He's pissing me off!" He turned to Joshua, completely exasperated. "Can you believe this guy?!"
"Hey... Officer Reyes."
Jeff's low and serious voice caught both men off guard. They looked at him, half-waiting for what he would say and half-ready to drag him back to his cell.
Jeff leaned in. His gaze was focused, but he was still smiling. "Do you know how stupid you sound right now? You believe the lies of some chick from a random block without relying on solid evidence." He scoffed, "No wonder I managed to get away the first time."
"You shut your mouth, or I'll nail your tongue to this table, boy."
"'Ya just don't wanna admit you're terrible at this job."
Reyes suddenly stood up from his chair, holding his cup above his head as if he was about to throw it at Jeff's face. Half of it spilt across the table; some drops fell on Jeff's hand, hot and sour. That same hand twitched slightly on the table, although Reyes's eyes were too blind with rage to see it.
"Sergeant—" Officer Joshua started, hesitant, but the older man cut him off with a sharp gesture.
"No. Let him talk," he snarled, his eyes not leaving Jeff's. "I wanna hear what a sick, pasty freak like him has to say about my job performance."
Jeff's smile didn't waver at the insult. If anything, it stretched wider, sharper. "You wanna know something funny, Reyes? I never proposed to any little bxtch Jane or whatever. That house wasn't a break-in. I've dated (y/n) for 3 years. So—my girl, my house and my kitchen."
"Your file says otherwise." Reyes tapped the folder. "It says you proposed to Jane Richardson. Ring and everything. Even neighbours confirmed it."
"I told you that's a lie."
"And I told you about what the report says."
"I don't care what the report says." His voice climbed, sharp enough to make the younger officer flinch. "You think I'd forget about something corny like getting down on my knees for some girl?" He scoffed, humourless. "Everyone's setting me up. Making themselves the victims. That's all they do." His eyes narrowed, something uglier creeping in. "And that kid? Not mine, anyway."
Reyes scoffed, "Nobody said it was."
"That's not what I meant." Jeff's teeth gritted. His voice lowered in a whisper that was somehow worse than a yell. "I leave for five minutes, and that's how she repays me. Fxcking whxre. Cheating on me with my idiotic brother..."
Reyes forced himself to stay still over Jeff's rumblings that he barely understood. He gripped the edge of the table instead and exhaled through his nose. "You're a person of interest in an assault case involving a minor. Whatever delusion you're running with about that woman and that child isn't going to change what happens to you next."
"Delusion, huh." Jeff repeated the word like it was a joke, "I wish she was delusional enough to realise how much she needs me." Something flickered behind his eyes—amusement bordering on mockery. "Hey, so why not just bring her in, right? Bring (Y/N) and tell her to look me in the eye and say she doesn't know me."
Reyes sighed, clearly wanting the conversation to be done. "She already did that, outside and during her own interviews. She said no. Twice. So stop beating about it."
He stood up, closing the files and turning to his subordinate. "That's it. Interrogation's over."
For the first time since he'd been dragged into this room, something cracked in Jeff's expression—a kind of disbelief that quickly turned into fury.
"She's lying," he muttered bitterly under his breath "She's fxcking lying, I know it. And I know exactly what I'm going to do about it."
"You're not getting out of here that easily." The younger officer, Joshua, spoke to him for the first time, his voice small but professional. He took the coffee cup that was still settled messily on the table, pulling it far from Jeff's reach like it was a weapon. "Not with an assault charge, a decade of complaints from your victims, and a psych evaluation waiting for you down the hall."
Jeff just flipped him off with both hands bound by the cuffs. Before they could start another fight, Reyes pushed the officer towards the exit by the shoulder. "Come on, Josh. Quit it."
As he reached the door, he paused, hand on the frame, and looked back once.
"For what it's worth," he said, "I hope she doesn't know you."
The door shut behind them.
Alone in the clicking hum of the interrogation room, cuffed to a table and sitting still, Jeffrey Woods smiled at nothing at all.

It has been two years since you had expected. Who would have thought that you, a jobless girl with a low budget from Louisiana, would survive the labours of pregnancy without the presence of your ex-fiancé, Jeffrey?
It has been over two years since you last saw him. Oddly, he vanished without a trace the morning after he proposed to you, barefoot on your cold and dusty kitchen floor, sliding a rusty ring on your trembling finger.
After 48 hours of reporting his disappearance, the police sent an elite team to search for him. They did it mostly out of forced empathy, and they also wanted to make it look like they were actually doing their job. His things were missing as well. So after only one day of research, the case was closed as a runaway. An ordinary escape of an adult from their responsible adult life. Simple. Clear. Done.
You didn't know what broke your heart the most that day. The fact that the police refused to give you further explanations about your fiancé's disappearance, or that he abandoned you, in his own house, with the child he didn't even know had been growing inside you for a month.
With the help of some close relatives—who happened to feel enough pity to help your situation—and the emotional support of Liu (Jeff's younger brother, whose "runaway" also alerted him as much as it left him with endless unanswered questions), you managed to survive the cravings and morning sickness and finally gave a healthy delivery.
On the 12th of September 2013, Elijah was born with the first falling leaves of the season. His hair was dark brown like his father's. A silent remembrance of Jeffrey's persistent, distant presence in your life. However, his eyes reflected your own every time they gleamed when he smiled up at you, his tiny hands reaching to touch your face as if you were his light in this gloomy town.
Three weeks later—since the unmaintained apartment was the last grieving memory of your fiancé that you decided to leave behind you—you moved in with Elijah in a new house across the street, a few blocks from Liu's and his parents'; the middle-aged couple each day growing more and more indifferent about their eldest son's disappearance.
A week ago, you, one of your closest relatives, and Liu celebrated Elijah's first birthday. It was a simple but memorable gathering that took place in your still box-full dining room where you took pictures using Liu's camera. He promised he would give you the pictures once they were ready.
He didn't. Not right away. He only gave them back three days ago with the sheepish excuse that he had to make doubles for himself. You only scoffed when he finally handed them to you, not even mad about it. Why would you be? It's Liu.
Speaking of him, he has just texted you goodnight. He said he had classes the next morning so he wouldn't be able to help you with dinner tonight. He also apologised for not seeing you and Elijah like he usually does when his parents are off sleeping.
It was ten o'clock when you placed the last cleaned plate in the cupboard. Rain was pouring heavily outside. Your next thoughts went immediately to Elijah. You pictured the little boy sleeping soundly in his crib upstairs, holding his stuffed animal in one hand and sucking his thumb with his other.
Your motherly instincts kicked in. Knowing your son, he probably knocked off the blanket in his sleep. He would easily catch a cold if he wasn't covered right away.
You sighed tiredly, rubbing your face, and headed towards the bedroom upstairs. But you barely made it to the hallway when you heard a knock coming from the window.
The sound made you stop abruptly. You turned around, eyes squinting. Through the fog caused by the fireplace next to the glass, you could barely see anything but the hammering rain outside.
You suddenly squeaked and jumped as someone started hammering the window aggressively, like they were trying to break in. Before you could do anything, the window shattered into pieces and a dark silhouette jumped through.
The cold wind stormed through the living room like a hurricane, biting down on your skin as it slipped under your pyjamas. But your legs weren't shaking from the cold but from the man, tall and drenched, who was lying on the ground.
He groaned as he tried to stand up, holding his side. Your heart skipped a beat at the sight of the long and shiny object that was in his other hand, dripping with a mixture of rain and, unmistakably... blood.
You panicked and let out a scream, grabbing the nearest chair and throwing it at the man before he could fully stand up or attack you. It landed right on his back, making him fall back down on his knees as he grunted. He let out an angry "Fxck!" before he lunged at you.
The air was knocked out of your chest as you were harshly tackled to the floor. You struggled under his heavy frame, your clothes half-soaked while he covered you fully with his—very long—arms imprisoning you. He was stronger than you imagined. His hands (with his right still holding the knife) went from your waist to grab your wrists as he held them both above your head. You tried to kick him off with your legs, but his hips pressed you harder against the floor. So hard that you were barely able to breathe.
Then he lifted his head from your neck, and your brain short-circuited as you recognised the man above you.
"Jeff?"
Your breath hitched. It had been a year since you said his name. The last time you did was when you were buried under a mountain of blankets, six months pregnant, whimpering about how much you'd missed him, cursing his soul for leaving you so selfishly. Even now, the tears couldn't come.
Ironically, even he looked surprised to see you.
"(y/n)?"
His voice was hoarse and deep. Deeper than you remembered. His skin was pale white, his hair darker than his natural brown, and his eyes wrinkled and dark, like he hadn't slept or eaten in weeks. He looked like a corpse and smelt like a ghost, decaying and distant.
His grip loosened, and your hand reached up to touch his face.
"What happened to your face...?"
Before he could answer, the sound of sirens rang outside the broken window.
"Shxt!" he cursed, standing back up. He grabbed his knife. "How did they find me?!"
He grabbed his hair tightly, pacing around the room. He stopped abruptly when his eyes landed back on you, still lying on the ground. He scooped you up harshly. You yelped.
"Help me!" He snarled. His hot breath—smelling like bleach and smoke—burned your face like a heater. "You have to help me!" He repeated, shaking your body with his hands gripped around your shoulders tightly.
"What...?!" You winced as the cool handle of the knife pressed deeper against your flesh. "You're being searched by the police?!"
He let out a shudder of frustration, his grip tightening on you, the sirens of the police growing louder and louder outside the house. Abruptly, the hand that was holding the knife let go of your shoulder and the pointy end of the blade was right under your chin.
"Listen here, you little bxtch!" His teeth gritted audibly; spit was coming out of them as he brought you closer to his face. "You're going to get me out of this mess, or else I will—"
Another siren. But this one was coming from upstairs.
"What the fxck?!" Jeff exclaimed, hearing the wailing of the baby. "A fxcking baby?!"
"Elijah!" You shouted, your motherly instinct suddenly kicking back in. How could you have forgotten about the baby when an intruder (father or not) was menacing you with a knife? You had to keep the baby safe!
At this moment, the police kicked the door open and men with guns stepped inside the house.
"Freeze!" One man shouted, his weapon pointing straight at Jeff. His team didn't waste a second and launched straight at him.
You took the opportunity to free yourself from Jeff and ran straight upstairs. The sight in the bedroom made your heart ache in the worst ways—Elijah was sitting up on his baby mattress, his eyes watering, his face twisting as he wailed in a series of screams that shook the walls so hard you thought the windows were about to break. He was probably woken up by the sirens and the chaos downstairs. With careful hands, you scooped him up and pressed him against your chest, whispering loving words against his hair.
"There, there, my love..." You cooed gently, bouncing him and pacing around the room. "Mommy's here..."
Once he was finally calmed down, you wrapped his small frame in a blanket, rubbed his cold feet against the cotton of the fabric, then carefully made your way downstairs.
When you entered the living room, the chaos was finally quietened except for the distant howling of the sirens outside. A police officer approached you; he was holding a notepad with his gloved hand and a pen with the other, his tall frame shielding you from the gleaming red and blue lights piercing through the broken window.
"May I know your name, Ma'am?"
You hesitated for a second before finally answering, "(y/n)... (y/n) (l/n)."
The cop nodded, writing it down on his notepad. "Your age?"
"(y/a; +18)"
"Is he yours?" He tilted his chin towards Elijah, who kept wiggling restlessly in your arms and tugging on the hem of your shirt.
You adjusted the one-year-old baby against your hip. "Yes, he's... he's my son."
"Do you know him by any chance?"
You blinked at his question, deeply confused. "Excuse me?"
"The man who broke into your house", the officer said, looking outside the still-open door. "Do you know him?"
Your throat suddenly went dry; a shiver that had nothing to do with the cold made you freeze in place. You slowly turned your head towards the man who was roughly pushed inside the police truck. Your eyes watched the back of his head. You remembered how much you loved braiding his dark-brown locks when he napped on the sofa. Just tease him about it when he woke up. Now those same hairs were darker, drier and greasy. You recalled how pale his skin was and how dark his wrinkles were when he was on top of you fifteen minutes ago. How his breath and clothes smelt of smoke, alcohol... and blood.
Your eyes fell on the red stains linking your broken window to the middle of the dining room. They continued to the hallways, then the front door—Your eyes were met with icy dark ones looking at you through the car window.
Jeff's stare had that murdering that he used to give you in the past when he was angry. His eyes screamed like a warning through the glass, the same look that still exists vividly in the back of your memory.
'Don't mess this up.'
'Don't do anything stupid.'
'If you mess up, I'll kill you.'
'I'll kill you.'
'Kill.'
That's right. You remember now. Jeffery wasn't here anymore. He was gone years ago. From the day of your engagement till Elijah was born and brought light to your life. Jeff is gone. Jeff will never come back. Not even in the form of a ghost. Not like this man. This man is not Jeff. He's nothing but a mere copy of your long-dead lover who was gone in the blink of an eye.
"No." You turned your head to the officer, your arms tightening protectively around Elijah's waist. Yet your voice shook slightly. "I don't know this man."
'Or did you?'

I always kept to myself. Never thought about going out too much. Not like I could, really. Nonetheless, I enjoyed the company of others, especially my closest friends, though I was less of a social type. It was easier, I always told myself, to stay tucked in my little corner of the world.
I spent most of my time indoors. Some days seemed like an endless loop: waking up early, a quick wash in the water, showering, breakfast, breathing in the fresh air of my balcony, then spending a cosy evening in my small bedroom.
I can't seem to hate the outside world, though. I never did. And I deeply care about people. Even if I rarely approach them during the day.
However, every night was the same. I sometimes stayed up very late when sleep was disturbed by my heavy feelings. If it hadn't been for the smell of the herbal tea on the end table, or the breathless light of the moon, it would have been hard for me to forget about the melancholy that always came during those ungodly hours.
I took the night and its beauty as my closest friends, someone who visited every time to fill the void in my lonely heart. Nonetheless, I was still alone... and very lonely.
And then I met him. And my life changed completely from that point.
A ridiculous fall on my balcony was all it took to make our meeting the most memorable. And ridiculous, also.
It was a cold and very quiet night. Sleep was slowly getting the best of me when I heard a scream followed by a harsh thud against the barrier of my balcony.
The sound jolted me up, and through the blurry glass of the window, I saw long, red feathers rocking in the air near the plants on my balcony.
Instinctively, I got up and opened the window. There, I saw a man curled in on himself, wincing over his pain. The same long, red feathers were scattered all over his body, making it hard to distinguish his appearance.
"Is everything alright down there?" I asked, concerned. "Sir?"
The man's posture slightly shifted. He was leaning on his right arm, from where I assumed was the source of his pain. He slowly opened his eyes, revealing his shiny, golden irises, and eyed me from the side. After a moment, he leaned on his left hand and tried to get up.
"I'm coming down!" I said as I quickly turned and headed towards the door.
"NO! Wait!" a voice warned through the night's silence. "Don't go out, it's too dangerous!"
I turned around and almost missed the red flash storming up towards the sky, the same red feathers following behind. The sound of kicks and pained voices had me picturing a violent fight on top of the building.
A few minutes later, the silence returned. My eyes naturally landed on the red feather hanging on the side of a plant. A strong gust of air swept it away.
"Fheww... Never thought some punks would give me such a hard time! Guess I'll have to prepare myself for another surprise next time, huh."
I recognised the voice—It was the same from earlier. But this time more relaxed and assured. I was still a bit startled when the sound of flapping wings came closer to my window—Before me stood a lean and bold figure, standing effortlessly with one foot pressed on the railing. He wasn't very tall, but his posture radiated confidence, assurance, and a strange feeling of safety.
His wings were large and majestic, fully occupying the night sky behind him. The moonlight's gleam pierced through the spaces between his long, red feathers. Some rays reached me and gleamed on my skin, while his face was partially covered by shadow. Nonetheless, his golden irises shone like a thousand suns. And even if the light of the moon couldn't reach his form fully, I could easily distinguish every trait of his face.
His lips curled into a slight grin and pulled me out of my thoughts. He bowed, his wings spreading even wider.
"Sorry, miss, for disturbing your beauty sleep. But some people decided to ruin the night's silence for the purse of a poor old lady." He let out a heavy sigh, both hands on his hips. "Bad guys like these never give us a chance to catch a break. What a shame, really..."
He stood back up, his grin widening. "Well, since you seem safe and unharmed, I'll let you get back to sleep. My job's done for the night." With a small jump, he hopped off the balcony. "Thanks for checking on me earlier!"
'Right! He's injured!'
His red wings puffed up as he started to take flight. I quickly ran straight to the window.
"Wait!" I called, voice full of worry. "Aren't you going to get your wounds treated?"
He turned his head and raised an eyebrow before pointing a finger to the bruise on his forehead. "Oh, this?" He smiled. "Nah, I'm pretty sure it'll heal on its own. It doesn't even hurt that much. So no big deal!"
"What about your arm?" I insisted, "You fell on your arm earlier, right?!"
This time, he fully turned around. A soft sigh left his lips as he shook his head, still smiling. "My, you really are a worrisome one."
With a sharp flap of his wings, he was already standing back in front of me. Both surprised and amazed by the astonishing speed, I backed up a little. His face was so close that my breath was immediately caught in my throat.
"Wanna patch me up, birdie?"
His tease set my cheeks on fire. I didn't respond. I couldn't respond. My sweaty hands kept a firm hold on the balcony's railing. I couldn't tell why I suddenly felt so shy in front of him. All I could think was how clear his face appeared to me right then.
The moonlight illuminated his pale skin. His eyes shone like gold glitter behind his yellow-tinted glasses. A fine line was traced along the edges of his eyelids, another along the undersides of his tear ducts. His hair, ash-blond and a bit messy, swayed gracefully with the night's cool breeze.
I never thought that so much charm and beauty could exist in one person, let alone believing that I'd have the honour to meet such a good-looking person in my life.
Yet, the longer I looked, the more familiar his face appeared to me...
'Red wings, blond hair, a cheeky smile...'
I screamed internally.
'No way...!'
At that moment, I wanted to slap myself for not recognising him earlier: the No. 2 Pro Hero. The one I saw on TV during the Hero Billboard Chart JP event a week ago. I remembered him showing off his wits and charisma to everybody. I didn't want to admit it then, but I secretly found it amusing how someone could speak so boldly to the public.
However, having him in front of me in person was completely different from seeing him on a TV screen. The more he stared back at me, the more I felt that my legs could give out anytime soon.
"Ahahaha! Why are you looking at me like that?" he laughed loudly. "Is this the first time you've seen me? Aww, don't be shy. I don't bite."
My hands grew even sweatier against the railing. "I-I... um..." I tried to say, before swallowing the knot in my throat, hoping the blush on my cheeks would stay unnoticed. "Are you... Are you sure you're okay? You seemed like you were in a lot of pain earlier."
His laugh grew louder. "Yeah! This ain't the first time I've taken a good fall. A few bad scratches aren't going to bring me down."
He adjusted his arm to play it cool but got betrayed by the wince that escaped his lips.
I deadpanned, less red in the face, but the blush was still noticeable. "You were saying?"
He chuckled and put back on a careless expression. "Well, yeah... or you can just ignore that." He flapped his wings and started hovering over the balcony. "But seriously, this is nothing. I've had way worse than that. Just a little bit of rest and it'll heal in no time!"
I silently watched him take his leave, still a bit worried about his condition, but I decided to trust his judgement.
Before he went completely out of sight, he turned around and smiled at me. So genuinely, it almost brought tears to my eyes.
"But still, thanks for the care. It's nice to have someone looking out for us pros instead of relying on us to save the world. And who knows, maybe one day I'll have you treat my wounds, and even grab a drink sometime. You seem quite lonesome for a pretty thing like yourself." He winked. "Good night, little dove."
With one last flap of his wings, he flew towards the night sky until he went out of view. I kept my eyes on the moon's full brightness, my hands still curled around the bars long after he'd gone.
Lonesome dove.
He has no idea how right he was.
I looked down at myself then—thoroughly, something I haven't done in years since I lived in this cage. The soft white feathers had lost their glow and slightly turned grey from the lack of any exposure to the sun. My legs, small and weak, were slightly shivering on top of the perch from nervousness and anticipation as they supported my tiny frame. I looked at the door behind me, the one I never dared to step into. I never tried to push it, even though it was open all this time.
I thought of him, flying without a second thought. Falling, getting back up, then flying again, not once questioning whether the sky belonged to him or not.
Something inside my chest—stubborn, small but very much alive—unclenched.
I stepped away from the perch and turned to the small door and touched it, half-expecting it to hold firm the way it always had in my mind. It never did, and opened, as it had always waited for someone to try it.
I stepped out. The cool night air met me fully. No bars between us now. I lifted my arms. Beneath them, wings—small, white, trembling with disuse—unfurled for the first time into the open world.
I didn't know yet how far I could fly, or where I would go, or how much things had changed since someone had let me try. But I spread them anyway, and jumped.
The wind caught me before the fall ever had the chance to. I exhaled a sigh of relief, catching up with my other friends from the past who also flew in the sky.

Jenna never asked to be part of this family.
She wakes up in a dark place she doesn't recognise — and the first thing she hears is the moos of cows that come straight from a nightmare.
