Yani Neko is here and we're so fucking happy! It's everything I wanted it to be.
Tbh I haven't seen too much of Bibury Studio's work, but we have enjoyed Witch Watch, Mahou Shoujo Magical Destroyers, and Quintessential Quintuplets so they're definitely a studio we have an eye on, and I'm very impressed by their adaptation. Feels Madhouse, MAPPA, SHAFT-lite in our opinion.
Usually we summarize the episode/chapter but there's no point. Yani Neko isn't a 4-koma, but most chapters are very short so a lot of the segments fly by.
Basically, Yani is a disgusting, bad person. Not maliciously bad, she's just scum. Her little sister is normal and her friends are for the most part (we haven't met them all yet). The land lord is a weird guy as I do feel bad for him on some level but he's just as gross as the other girls. Lil sis is definitely a closest siscon (sorry your big sis is the worst person alive). At the end of the day Yani knows that smoking is bad for her, especially the level that she smokes at. She also knows her death via cancer would affect the few people she actually cares about like her little sister who everyone adores.
For a while we were keeping up with it online, but the site we use took it down after it got licensed, though they have recently started uploading new chapters except the old ones, so we're like 80+ chapters behind.
Love that the convenience store for anthros had metal playing on a shitty speaker. It really gave so much to the dingy yet cozy atmosphere. Working conditions for anthros are definitely black-company tier and liminal. The vile state of Yani's room is so visceral and vivid you can feel and smell it.
The OP and ED both rock. Hoping the ED has animation in the next episode. Once again, the OP's animation reminds us of MAPPA ala CSM and JJK S2-S3 and TRIGGER to an extent. Very catchy both songs.
As this is the failgirl junkie we did most of the drugs we had; it's only right. Watch and medicate responsibly, but we did 2 bong hits, drank 2 beers, and 6 rips from two different vapes. We don't smoke cigs unless we're offered so we don't have any on hand, plus we wouldn't smoke cigs indoors. Also no more e-cigs ;_;
At the end of the day your enjoyment of Yani Neko will vary by how much you can/or tolerate/like gross-out humor, fail girls, bad characters (IASIP, Arrested Development), and drug use. Personally we were in love from chapter 1 so we're happy to be here in the present. We don't think this series will be for everybody, but for those it is Yani Neko is a wild ride. If you enjoyed Pop Team Epic this is probably up your alley.
We give Yani Neko Episode 1 an S.
