more thoughts on gender-bent supernatural. so maybe i’m just transgender but imo the majority of people go about it in all the wrong ways.
first, we must understand that if sam, dean, and cas were women, supernatural would be a fundamentally different show. spn is such a masculine man’s property that to make it with women would alter everything. a consistent theme of the show is how cis(het)* men deal with their masculinity, what that looks like, how its reflected in others etc.
second, we must also understand that a gender-bent version of these characters as cis women vs trans women would ALSO be very different from each other. for the rest of this post i will be seeing a gender-bent supernatural with sam, dean, and cas as cis women specifically. i’m not cis myself but i’m also not a trans woman so i won’t discuss the experience of being a trans woman. also, considering how cis-normative the concept of gender-bends are as well as supernatural itself being a very cisgender show, tfw will be cis women in this post.
third, looking at dean specifically: dean as we all know is an overcompensating cis(het)* man. dean as a cis woman would not be overcompensating for something she thinks she lacks or can’t achieve as man. she would specifically be a butch woman that feels the pressures of misogyny from simultaneously being not woman enough (too masculine) and never being able to be seen as masculine (because she is a woman and women are not capable of “manly” things) by cisheteronormative society.
she wouldn’t be dressing in feminine/women’s clothes. she’d essentially dress the same as cis man dean. she’d have a similar haircut. she wouldn’t really change except for how masculinity vs femininity is dealt with. how others see her. how she acts concerning misogyny and her treatment of men and other women.
fourth, looking at cas. oh castiel. CAS TEE EL angel of the lord my god. cas. okay. castiel is already a very transgender character in the show because he is so removed from cisheteronormative society like he just doesn’t gaf. cas in the body of a cis woman wouldn’t alter that much. except she probably would wear a blouse and skirt and a women’s version of the trench coat because joanne novak would be a more traditional christian housewife.
i DO think cas would undergo an actual transformation of eventually not wearing as many women’s clothes anymore and shifting to men’s/gender neutral attire as she grows more comfortable in her humanity and she’s also emulating dean in the sense that much of everything she understands about humanity and humans comes from dean. so canon “cis” man cas is essentially a nonbinary/unlabeled gender gay man and gender-bent cas would be a “cis” woman to a nonbinary/unlabeled gender lesbian.
fifth now looking at sam. canon sam very much teases and even berates dean for his inability to be a man at times whilst also shaming dean’s uber masculine traits such as having a lot of sex. gender-bent sam would be no different except its “why are you behaving like a man?” “thats gross women shouldn’t do that” etc. sam would comment on dean’s inability to be a “proper” woman (“dean stop being slutty”). despite sam too taking part in the same or similar behaviors because she’s a hypocrite and sees herself exempt.
i also think sam would probably see escaping hunting as a path to a “normal” femininity because john as a father would raise two daughters in the same hunting life in a way they’re not able to be “normal” women. (make no mistake john would still be misogynistic in a way he’s a huge part of the reason that sam and dean have hang ups on what it means be women in a man’s world). but also sam’s desire for “normal” femininity is also a facade like in canon and that’s something she has to deal with.
okay. this was basically a psa to STOP making gender-bent sam dean and cas uber feminine!!!!!!!!!! YOURE DOING IT WRONG!!!!!! signed a butch gender nothing lesbian. thank u
*cis(het) to mean the three of them were written with the intent to be heterosexual but. we know the truth
