“Sure I do!” Misa smiled and looked up at her from her chair. “You never want to put on too much that you look like a clown. And unless you’re performing or dressing up, the trick is to make it look like you’re not wearing any at all.”

“See, right off the bat, you’re wrong. I know I’m not a god,” she said, a small on her face. It was no different than the one she always wore, as if she was speaking as casually about her new favorite pop star or something.

But there was a hint of superiority tainting it.

“I’m a hero.”

“More than that- I am the ideal hero this world has yearned for. Because I was like one of you. Weak and helpless. You see sin infects the world, but you’re powerless to do anything about it. Think about the heroes in manga and western comic books; for the most part they foil the evil villain’s plans before they work out… but the real world isn’t like a manga or a comic. More often than not, we lack the power to stop bad things from happening before they happen. We can only punish them after; and that’s what I am. That’s what Kira is. Look around you. Everyone wants to live in a peaceful world, right?” She asked… too distressingly casually, even sitting down on the sofa behind her.

“How many times have you seen the news and said ‘that’s so fucked up! How could something like this happen!? Is there no justice in this world!?’ Now, I am that justice. Now, there is somebody dispensing justice. We’re leaving the era of vicious murderers who murder kids getting out in 15-20 years; because now there is a hero that can stop them. No, the crimes cannot be stopped before they happen… but justice is now reigning supreme. Don’t you get it now? I’m a hero. A silent guardian of the night, the defender of the weak…” She said, her smile still on her face. “And with each person facing my judgment, the world grows quieter. People are becoming afraid to do bad things, because now they know there won’t be some corrupt system to protect them. They know if they do evil things, the hero will punish them… don’t you get it? I’m making the world peaceful, one judgment at a time. Give it a few years; there will come a day only the foolish will ever think of even trying to harm another person… well, they’re already cowards. But you get what I mean, right? The crime rates will reduce more and more… everyone who is good will know they are protected. That even if Kira cannot save their lives, Kira will punish those who dare harm them.”

“I am no god, able to prevent crimes before they happen. But I am a hero. A different kind of hero… I can’t be like Superman or Goku, I can’t fly across the world and prevent the crimes before they happen. But I can create the New World and protect the innocent people there… doesn’t that sound wonderful? Don’t you want to live in a beautiful, peaceful, quiet world? Because you and I are both humans… we know that no matter how much you oppose Kira, how much you hate the idea of Kira, the desire for that world is inside your human heart and soul!”

She tilted her head, before giggling.

“… Not that it matters. After all, you’re going to be committing suicide when the clock strikes midnight. Which is in just a few seconds now. Its sad I have to kill people like you who aren’t evil now and then; but the ideal hero of this world can’t show mercy to those who fight her. If you’re going to stand in the way of all of humanity’s hopes and dreams… then its bye-bye for you~”

The clock struck twelve.

The man before her’s eyes glazed over.

Her smile became more sinister.

“I guess it doesn’t hurt telling you this at this point; heaven and hell aren’t real. After death, we all go to the same place… maybe there is an afterlife, but much more likely? 

“There’s nothing.”

“Think about that on your way out, alright?”

anyways; this image... from whatever magazine it was (I've never been able to find it) is essentially what this entire blog is more or less based on; now it started as a Kira AU years ago, but this is basically the best way i can possibly sum up my muse; a hidden genius, or perhaps rather untapped genius. a perfectly ordinary girl who has only been interested in ordinary things, content to live her life like that, but capable of extraordinary things and intelligence if actually pushed to it, not unlike how Light was in the 2015 live action drama. Sayu has all the potential in the world in my headcanons on standing on the like with Light and L, she just has never tapped into it. and so... that’s the blog!

The hero, the protector of the New World didn’t feel too comfortable around this new transfer student to her school. He was an absolute genius; as smart as Light, or perhaps even more brilliant? She didn’t know, but something about him made her feel...

... Threatened.

And yet, they were being forced to work together; their chemistry teacher was making people work together for a group project. And so she put on her false air, as she always did.

               He feels bad for her. One wouldn’t think it from the man tasked to lead their rag-tag group of revenants through their sometimes harrowing missions, but the concept of feeling sympathy for the very ‘monsters’ they were forced to hunt and slay is not something foreign to him. Grotesque as they may be and as dangerous as they’d become … these are all sentiments he’d told himself a thousand times. Looking at her makes him feel guilty and, for once, it shows on his face, in the subtle way his eyes soften and a gentle frown curves his lips. He wishes, more than anything, that he could take the pain away. From her, his people, this world … he wishes it were that easy.

               “I know. I understand.”  He’s not sure exactly what to say, at first, so he settles for the most blunt reassurance he can give her. He steps forward and reaches out, his hand raising to rest comfortingly on her head. He doesn’t interrupt her, though. He lets her speak, because he knows how much it can hurt when feelings like this aren’t said aloud. Only once she’s done does he try his hand at saying anything substantial, though there’s nothing he can do to fix the problem.  “It’s okay to feel that way. It’s … okay to hurt for them. It doesn’t make you weak to understand the pain of others. You’re right … they were people. They were like us. Just because we fight them now for the sake of protecting ourselves … doesn’t mean we aren’t allowed to mourn them. Not wanting to raise a blade to them doesn’t make you lesser than any of us who do.”

               He often worries if he’s become numb to such things … but the twisting in his gut and the pain in his chest lets him know that he hasn’t.

               “Hey, hey … you’re not useless. No one thinks that. Having you here helps us.”  He smiles softly, letting out a weak laugh as he does so. It’s just posturing, hoping to make her feel better, even though he knows it can only go so far. He pauses, briefly, then moves to rest both hands on her shoulders.  “Would you … want a hug?”  He’s sounds a bit embarrassed to ask, but it … almost feels like second nature. Like something he would’ve done, if he’d had a sister.  “You can cry it out if you need to… or talk to me, whatever you want…”

Sayu sniffled a bit, her emotions still on high. Louis’ words were kind and understanding, and it began to calm her down. At first she felt like a hero slaying monsters, but now that the high from fighting the Lost had come down... this was truly what she needed. “Thanks...” She said at the assurance, looking up at the older man with watery eyes. 

It was OK to be sad.

It was OK to mourn the Lost.

One day they’d reach the world back outside Vein, and when they did, Sayu decided in that moment she wanted to hold a funeral service of some kind for all the Lost; but that bridge would be crossed one day. These were the days of struggle, of fighting. And Sayu wanted to fight for everyone and keep them all safe, she wanted to make Louis and Yakumo and everyone else proud.

And she nodded.
