Serious
TFW someone comments you’re being too serious when you’re secretly afraid of saying the wrong things and tighten up inside.
Maybe my history of recklessness has led me to who I am today. I guess I’ll just have to keep on trying.
Science Terms for Non-scientists
There is a huge amount of misunderstanding around common science terms. So here I am to blow away the fog! Hopefully some of you can find this useful for both everyday life and your writing.
Hypothesis: A statement made by a researcher regarding what they think is going on. Also called an “educated guess,” as in the person has the background knowledge to attempt an explanation prior to any testing. A hypothesis must be testable.
Observation: Literally what it sounds like. It is a fact of something a person sees. For example, a researcher may make an observation that the sky appeared orange at sunset or that their rat ate 24 food pellets in month. There is no thinking about it, no extrapolation, just the facts.
Law: This is a statement made following repeated experimental observation. A law is always true under a given set of conditions. They are not theories, as they do not try to explain what is going on.
Theory: This is the explanation for the repeated observations. It is supported by experimentation. Note: theories can never be proven true, only false (you can never test every single instance of the situation). You can just build evidence to support it.
The scientific method (though not always followed):
A person makes an observation.
The person forms a hypothesis attempting to explain the observation.
The person comes up with ways to test the hypothesis.
The person implements these tests.
The person evaluates results and revises the hypothesis if needed.
Field: This is the sub-specialization of a scientist. For example, a biologist may be a general biologist, marine biologist, molecular biologist, cancer biologist, neuroscientist, immunobiologist, epidemiologist, ecologist, behavioral researcher, neuropsychologist, etc.
Field work: This is the type of experiment that is performed outside of the lab. For example, an ecologist may be performing evaluations of stream conditions. While they are physically at the stream, they are doing field work.
Bench work: This is work inside the lab. For example, a scientist who is actively working on something like cell culture or running a gel is doing bench work.
Science writing: This is writing with a focus on science! It may be writing scientific articles, writing protocols, evaluating and editing proposals, or writing for popular press and audiences. Yes, this is its own separate career, typically requiring a background in at least science and possibly scientific writing or journalism.
Journal: This is where scientific papers are published. Some common journals in my field are Nature and The American Journal of Medicine and Neuron. There are a lot. And some are very obscure. They are rated by this thing called “impact factor” that is supposed to relate to journal quality (better impact factor gives your research better exposure), but in my opinion is nonsense. Also, you should trust peer reviewed journals more than journals that are not peer reviewed…that means that other professionals in their field have evaluated the paper.
Principle Investigator (PI): This is the person in charge of a particular study. Often that is the person who runs the lab out of which the study comes. Their name will be last on the paper. Note: name order on papers is very important. First and last author are the important ones. If your name is in the middle, you’re not as big of a contributor unless it is noted otherwise in the journal.
I hope you found this interesting and informative! Hopefully I will be able to post a biology-specific post like this soon. :)
Happy writing!
Dreams of youth
I just had someone tell me (over Facebook) that my ambition to be a medical doctor at 18 is irrelevant because it was made when I was "very young which is not really counted". For the record, I also made my decision to pursue science at that age - possibly even younger - and have stuck with it ever since. I don't think the dreams of your youth are any lesser than your ambitions today simply because you didn't choose to pursue them eventually. Had I made a different decision back in June 2009, I would likely be a certified medical doctor today. But that got me thinking: what were the dreams of my youth? How many of my prior aspirations have I dismissed because I thought too little of myself, or believed they would never be possible? Do they count any less than the path I have chosen today?
It’s been less than 24 hours...
And I find myself missing you so, so much. I have never felt emotion this intensely before, especially in such a short space of time. To say this is difficult to bear would be an understatement.
It seems like with every passing day, as we grow closer to each other, it becomes harder and harder to live apart from you. I know you will be back in ten weeks, and even then it feels more difficult to be physically separated from you during this period compared to the first four months we were apart last year. That’s crazy, isn’t it?!
It seems like I really need to lean on God’s strength and trust that He will provide for our every need, for Him to help us grow in love despite the distance, through the test of time. It will no doubt be difficult for us - it has always been - but with every passing day, I grow more confident that we can hold on to what we have with each other, and hope for a more beautiful tomorrow.
I thank God that He’s placed you in my life. You’re such a blessing in my life, more than you can ever imagine. I guess this is what love does to a person, doesn’t it?

New Resolve
Well. I guess things have been made clearer, so I made a couple of new resolutions for myself: No mentioning. No responding to provocation. And try not to say mean things.
I can do that.
Oh God...
How we need you now when the world falls apart and only You can save the desperate and broken.
Say to them, O Lord, that darkness is no more! Victory has come in glory and our wounds are now healed.
We are nothing but broken shards awaiting redemption; made whole in Jesus Christ.
Oh my love, You are my fire, For you light up my world like nobody else. Near, far, wherever you are I’ll catch a grenade for you. Even if it sounds corny Don't ever let no one tell you, you ain't beautiful. Because you’re beautiful. It’s true. Girl I've been all over the world looking for you And all along I believed I would find you So I won’t hesitate no more Cause I’ve finally found you. The friend that was there all along And I’m holding on forever.

How did clouds get their names?
The study of clouds has always been a daydreamer’s science, aptly founded by a thoughtful young man whose favorite activity was staring out of the window at the sky. Luke Howard, the man who classified the clouds, forever changed humanity’s understanding of these changeable, mysterious objects.
Howard observed that clouds have many individual shapes, but that have few basic forms. In fact, all clouds belong to one of three principle types.
But, clouds are constantly changing, merging, rising, falling, and spreading throughout the atmosphere, rarely maintaining the same shapes for more than a few minutes. Any successful naming system had to accommodate this essential instability. So, in addition to the three main cloud types, he introduced a series of intermediate and compound types, as a way of including the regular transitions that occur among clouds.
Howard identified seven cloud types, but these have since been expanded to ten, cloud nine being the towering cumulonimbus thunder cloud, which is probably why being on cloud nine means to be on top of the world.
Once that had been named and classified, clouds became easier to understand as the visible signs of otherwise invisible atmospheric processes.

How times have changed
I'm a changed man. So much change has happened in 2015 that now, in 2016, I'm nothing like the person I was a year ago. I have found love, and love has found me. It's incredible how much more I can be, how infinite the possibilities are when I am with her. It's more than a hope and a feeling. It's an incredible feeling of satisfaction, to know that you have found not your other half, but your other whole. Why settle for half plus half when you can break the rules and make one plus one equal three? I guess words alone cannot describe how incredibly fortunate I am to be in my current position. People may continue to judge, but the fact is that these things do not happen by chance, and I have learned to embrace everything life brings my way. Let the world watch us burn brightly in the night sky, my dear, and we will leave a trail where we have blazed and look back in awe and wonder at how everything came to be.

SpaceX just ushered us into the future of space flight
On Monday night, SpaceX, Elon Musk’s private aerospace company, launched its Falcon 9 rocket into space and landed it, upright, unexploded, back at Cape Canaveral. Why this is such a big deal.

80 report illness after eating at Boston-area Chipotle
Boston College said Tuesday that as many as 80 students reported feeling ill after eating at a local Chipotle, which has since been closed by the health department. The Mexican food restaurant chain, which was linked to a multi-state outbreak of E. coli last month, released a statement saying it thinks these are cases of norovirus. - Associated Press

If you haven’t the strength to impose your own terms upon life, then you must accept the terms it offers you.

Interesting Directions
They say that life takes you some interesting directions. That is true. I gather that many of us can relate to the experience of looking back and hardly imagining that we would be where we are today.
I also believe that many of these directions are not without purpose or aim. And by ‘purpose’, I am alluding to a higher form of direction, one beyond the self. Sometimes we look at what we have done, how far we have come, and find everything to be a mystery... but really, the answer is out there and accessible, and only through deliberate self-reflection, perusal of Scripture and prayer will we be able to understand the true meaning of our actions and what we must do in the years to come.
