“I’m– not sure.”

Shouto casually frowns at his phone screen. He intended to search for some cat pictures Midoriya had previously requested to see.

    Who knows… well, that was an answer. Izuku could accept it, at least; he wasn’t insomniac, per say, but some nights you just didn’t sleep, and that was just that. As Todoroki edged closer, Izuku maneuvered the book so that they could both read on. At least Todoroki had exceptional handwriting and not the chicken-scrawl that Izuku took notes in. His normal handwriting, or what he used in his journal, was practically type-face; but notes? They were… legible? He could decipher them most of the time, at least, but he found that the physical act of writing was more helpful to him than being able to read the notes later.

   But then you came across situations like this, where his notes were either unintelligible or just wrong. So having Todoroki’s there, and him to explain, was a boon. Because his brain was just too tired to try to figure out what seven-hour-ago Izuku had been pretty confident he understood.

   He watched Todoroki point, eyes raking the page as he explained. Oh… oh well if he was missing a whole section, that’d explain a lot of why his answer had four extra numbers in it…With a disappointed, muted groan, Izuku leaned his head on his hand, his elbow on the desk. His eyes looked at the notebook with a disgruntled resignation. “Okay…. so wait, if I’m supposed to get x before y, but I have to solve there for z before I can get to x, and z’s at the back of the equation? So like…. Grrrrr….”

   He pointed, glowering. “And I flipped the sign there, crap…” So that whole string of the equation was wrong, too… This was problem three of eight due on Thursday. He really shouldn’t have put it off this long… math: the one thing he procrastinated on…

Shouto simply watches his friend struggle quietly for a bit. The clock at the end of the bed catches his gaze with its bright digital lights; it’s almost three in the morning.

Honestly? The equation to find y is not a deciding point in whether Midoriya can become a great hero or not. As much as he believes homework and grades are important, of course, sleep is as important, too.

You can tell by simply looking at Izuku’s eyes that he’s been at it for hours, he always works so hard, probably harder than anyone else in this building. Struggling with a little math isn’t really going to change that.

“z is actually the easiest part, after you’re done with y which is the longest, see--” He points towards his own notes once again, the tip of his finger following the equations on the lined paper. “The rest of the exercise sheet is pretty much the same, except for the 8th one, it gets a little tricky.”

“Happy birthday, sis.”

His features are soft as he grins slightly, steadily holding the cake in his hands. Of course the cake looks homemade, Shouto isn’t entirely proud of it, but if it wasn’t for Kaminari’s baking assistance, it wouldn’t have become a reality in the first place.

It’s 5 pm on a Sunday afternoon and the house seems empty as Shouto getsready to return to campus. He stops at the kitchen for some water and spots thevase filled with flowers, these definitely weren’t there the day before.

There’s nobody around and he slowly approaches the counter to lean inand feel the scent, out of sheer curiosity. With his nose buried in flowers, hespots the small note with his name on it, Fuyumi’s handwriting is instantlyrecognized.

Shouto’s lips curl into a small but warm smile as he reads the note, tuckingit into his pocket he then pulls the vase into his arms and heads towards thefront door. It’s going to be a little awkward carrying these around in thetrain, but he doesn’t mind, not in the slightest.
