Oh Captain My Captain [Closed] {@icouldbethat}
"No because I’m controlling it, you see. I’ve had it omit humans. I can do that." He continued to move around the console, twisting and turning and listening to the dull hum as he did so. The TARDIS always did love working with him and how he’d missed giving it a chance to work it’s magic.
"Me?" He paused, eyes resting on the young Human before him, realizing after a moment that he’d actually brought a human into the TARDIS. "Oh I’m an alien alright. Defiantly not from around here. I’m a Time Lord. One of the last three Time Lords, actually." He hit the last button, listening to the scanners buzz to life. "And I realy don’t like it when other creatures mess with the human race."
~
“Is this one of those bully big brother things where ‘I’m the only one who’s allowed to mess with my brother’?” Ianto asked sounding concerned. “I’m starting to think I shouldn’t have followed you in here.”
The Barista found himself eyeing the door and wondering if he’d be any safer making a break for it. He never liked those alien abduction stories, they always had needled and probes in them and Ianto was not fond of the idea of being probed by anything at the moment...
A Valiant-ine Effort
"Hmm. I guess I’m just hardwired to think of battle. You get trained that way." As he drove along he tried to pull out ever stunning thing he’d ever seen, searching for the best that he could do. There were tiny things, waking up in the muddle of a forest at the crack of dawn to birds chirping and the dew-kissed leaves shining, or the first cup of tea after being stranded on the satellite for weeks. The one he settled on he thought was beautiful.
"There’s this planet out there, Raptus. Gorgeous planet covered in nothing but trees as bit as hundred-year-old redwoods and mountains as tall as Everest. The only humanioids that live there live in the trees and are rarely heard from at all. There’s no electricity and ships have to teleport people down. We’re not allowed to fly inside the atmosphere. And let me tell you when the light hits those trees just right and the wind blows the gorgeous smell of untouched wilderness around you and the smell of the cinnamon grass hits you it’s like being lost in some strange heaven."
Taking just a beat to breath in, almost able to smell what he’d described he let it out, offering a small grin to Ianto. “And the first time I went there I was just a young boy. A friend had been once and he wanted me to see it before-” He didn’t finish that thought. “But the first time I Set down on the planet we must have walked through the forest for four hours and I was still amazed at the end when we stepped into the clearing before the Mountain range. And just as I looked up to take in the scale of the mountain something flew overhead. IT’s shadow was so huge it eclipsed the two shining suns long enough for me to get a good look at it and do you know what it was?” His smile had returned in full. “A Gawel. They’re giant Owls with four legs and bat-like grips on their wings. It looked right at me, like it stared into my soul. I’ll never forget that feeling, like in that moment I could become anything, like I had met a God and been found equel.”
~
“There it is.” Ianto mused, a coy smile returning to his features. “There’s the smile I enjoy so much. I thought I had lost you for a minute there.”
Ianto had hoped that if the conversation ended on a light and positive note Jack might be able to see it as a good thing, a positive experience, and maybe he would feel okay with trying it again later on. For now the Barista was content with the fact that he was trusted, even if only a little.
“It sounds oddly romantic.” He commented. “Out there, I mean. Space. So much to see and do, so many adventures waiting for you. Hard to believe there’s so much more out there when there’s already so much to do here.”
A Flicker in Time
Edwin shook his head, and despite his apparent ease of accepting his situation he simply couldn’t wrap his mind around the idea that all of them were gone. Out of the world in an instant, without anything so simple as a goodbye. What would they think of them? How long would they search before giving him up as a lost cause?
He gave a nod at Ianto’s offer, raising an eyebrow at the name of the institute the other man was employed, though he simply assumed it was something like the SSR, only with things of a much more supernatural nature. A part of him rather thought that, if nothing else, Howard would be intrigued. As far as Mrs. Jarvis, though…
"Let’s go, then," he said with another nod. "I’m not doing any good standing around here."
~
“Right then, this way.” Ianto waved to Edwin as indication to follow as the younger turned to leave. “You’re lucky in one respect; you didn’t land far from the Hub. It’s a small consolation but at least you don’t have to take a seven hour car trip with me.”
“That one was awkward...” His thoughts commented.
Ianto lead Edwin down some of the more sight-seeing streets of Cardiff on his way back to the hub. The new man had landed close enough to the Hub that it made next to no sense to take the Torchwood Van and so a leisurely walk back was in order. Ianto knew that the rest of his team was out Weevil hunting and so he made sure to stay away from alley ways or back roads or any place a Weevil would feel safe. In total it took them about ten minutes to get back to the outside of the Hub, and now Ianto would finally be allowed to do something Jack usually did, something Ianto had always wanted to try on an unsuspecting ‘victim’. On some level he was sure this made him a child, but at the moment Ianto Jones could care less. He stepped up on to the stone that covered the lift in to the Hub and looked down at Edwin.
“Step up here with me.” He said simply. “Right on this brick.”

A Valiant-ine Effort
Something stunning? He tried to search through all the memories of time and space and the things he’d seen, settling on one memory that struck him enough to bring a smile to his face. “There was a war.” He started, though realizing it didn’t sound like a cheery memory he quickly continued. “For the system that my home planet was in. I was called to serve and it was… well it was war.” He took in another breath. “But one night I can remember, we were part of the ground troop. We were on the front lines, stuck in these twenty-foot deep trenches fighting these creatures. And we’d been there for months and I mean properly stuck. Low on food and downright angry at the people across the battle field. They were keeping us form home. We were miserable and moral was low and then came an attack, a direct assault. We were scrambling to get out of the trenches and up onto the field before the gas they’d hit us with was set ablaze. Our side retaliated with guns and bombs and the battle started to rage and we were tired and terrified and losing.” He took a moment to shake himself form that memory, onto the god part of it.
"But right in the middle of that battle there was this sudden cry from the east and the whole army just paused to find out what could have made that notice. We’d heard pain before but not like this. We all just froze, both sides, looking out on the field until we spotted this lump on the ground. It was huge, I mean really huge and we weren’t sure what it was but we were all pretty sure it hadn’t been there before. It didn’t take long to figure out what it was because bouncing around it and making a sound like a wounded animal was another lump. We all sort of gathered around it and we realized just what it was.” He swallowed. “On that planet there are these deer like creatures, but you can’t see them. They’re fur has a shimmer element, it makes it so you never notice them. We guessed one must have wander out in feat and been shot, because it had become visible and out of longing for help it’s child had also shown itself. We were all so shocked we didn’t know what to say or do. No one fired, no one spoke, we all just sort of stood there until someone from my side stepped forward to try and comfort the horse-sized fawn.” He kept driving, looking over at Ianto for a moment.
"It sounds awful, but three things happened in that moment. The fawn was so greatful to have someone there with it it looped it’s head around my solider and pulled it closer to it, whining but looking just a little more comfortable. Four of the men from either side stepped forward and worked together to make sure the mother’s body wasn’t wasted. Meat for food went to either side and when we returned to the trenches we spent two days under a cease-fire, refusing every command that opted to have us fire at each other. We tried to give as much respect for what we did as we could. That life had nothing to do with the war and out petty fighting took it. We all made friends that day, and the solider that comforted the fawn lived through it and on the other side? He designated the planet a safe zone…" He was fond of that memory.
-
“Kind of ironic.” Ianto said quietly. “I ask for something stunning and you tell me of war. A ceasefire true enough, but a battle none the less. Is there nothing out that that just has simple beauty to it for you Jack? A sunrise on a clear warm morning? A cuppa on a cold winter’s day? Surely there must be something like that out there?”
There had to be at least one thing in his memory that brought hope or happiness that didn't start with a war or a fight or a battle. Truly the universe could not be all bad, could it? Life had to have more meaning than simply fighting all of the time...

"Ianto, is this your diary?"
“Journal.” He corrected on impulse. “And it seems to be.Which parts have you been reading this time?”
There were a few things in there he had hoped the other hadnot seen. But after the last time and the comment about measuring tapes he was almost certain Jack would read anything he wanted to if Ianto had been distracted enough to leave the book lying around. How Jack got past the lock with out breaking it always kind of amazed the coffee runner though.
He tilted his head, crystal-blue eyes looking up at Ianto as if trying to read his life on his face. “I just want to hear your voice,” he admitted, speaking slowly.
-
A visible shift of expression washed over the young receptionist. It was impossible to stay mad or even slightly miffed at Jack when he did things like that. Ianto couldn’t help but shake his head and give a coy smile.
“I’m afraid I’m not very good when put on the spot like this.” He admitted, trying to think of ‘what’ to talk about. “I’m sure I could read out my laundry list of things that need to be finished and that would keep me talking for a good hour.” He joked.
Oh Captain My Captain [Closed] {@icouldbethat}
The Captain had to admit he was a bit disappointed when Ianto didn’t say ‘it’s bigger on the inside.’ He’d always wanted someone to say that too him. Oh well, he’d get that eventually. Moving around the console of his perfectly repaired ship he threw switches and levers and turned knobs with a slight objection from the ships core. With a frown he muttered something toward the console in a language Ianto would not understand and that seemed to actually surprise The Captain as well. He was hardly aware he now spoke Gallifreyan.
"It’s not a trick." He said easily as he continued his work, trying to get a fix on the city to see if there were any more Gelph about. "Welcome to My TARDIS. It’s like… a pocket dimension. It only looks small outside. It’s very useful for storage space." He pulled his scanner down from it’s place at the top of the ship’s stock. "And one wouldn’t scan for zombies, since it’s not zombies we’re looking for. If we were on a planet with that capability I’d say we should but in this case it’s just aliens."
JUST aliens, he said.
-
“If this is an alien ship then won’t it just identify all of the humans out there?” Ianto questioned. “And what does that make ‘you’?”
It only now occurred to him that he had stepped right in to an alien craft with what was likely an alien pilot. This was not how most abductees would describe their encounters or experiences being abducted by aliens. Most were not tricked on to a statue-looking pocket ship.
He was beginning to question what was in that drink he’d had earlier...

Jack tilted his head. Sometimes, Ianto reminded him so much of Angelo it made his heart ache. And because of him, Jack couldn’t say the things he wanted to say. He didn’t want to hurt his young lover anymore than being with a man like Jack would come to hurt him.
His jaw clenched a bit, and he twirled his pen between his fingers. “I have time now,” he said, looking up a bit.
-
“Anything in particular come to mind then?” He asked, noting that particular look on the others face. Something wasn’t quite alright when Jack made that face but Ianto could never figure out what or why. The younger had tried chalking it up to having lived as long as a man like Jack had, but every once in a while the man’s eyes spoke of a deep well of pain. There had been a flicker of it just a moment before but of course Ianto knew better than to try asking what was wrong. Jack loved his privacy.

He held it up. “I didn’t. It was under the files I asked you for yesterday,” He looked open and flipped his pen over his knuckles before settling it back in his grip.
He frowned a bit. He looked up. “When was the last time we actually talked? “I mean, about something other than coffee, work, or sex.”
-
“When was the last time we actually talked?” Ianto almost mumbled as he gingerly picked up his book. “We’ve both been busy of late. Seems there’s never an end to things that need to be done around here.”
The younger man had been trying his best not to let how busy everyone else seemed to be get to him, it had been a very rough week on everybody, but he couldn’t help feeling a bit neglected again.
