Stories that subvert expectations concerning demographics and themes are typically dismissed out of hand during the pitching process. They're not perceived as being commercially safe, which means you effectively have to "sneak" in these subversions and then reveal after the fact that you've done so. But by that point the book has already been positioned as one thing or another, creating a struggle for it to find its audience.

Or, possibly even worse, is when you get through the pitching process believing that you've been able to retain your complex intent only to see it dashed during development. I had an especially heartbreaking version of this happen to me in an anthology that I'll detail at a later date.
