Romaniaâs disappearing girls: Poverty, desperation drive girls from their hometowns & into the arms of sex traffickers
Most teenage girls â as young as 13 â have long quit school, with many disappearing into the realm of sex trafficking. According to the U.S. State Departmentâs 2014 âTrafficking in Persons" report, one-third of Romaniaâs trafficking victims are underage girls.

in BacĂąu County, Romania     Â
Can we please acknowledge that these girls are not simply Romanian. They are ethnic Roma. BacÄu is home to communities of ethnic Roma and the girls in all of these photographs are Roma. You canât just write an article about sex trafficking in Eastern Europe, particularly Romania, without even so much as addressing the systematic and state-sanctioned racism and oppression, which traps girls in this horrific form of slavery. Al Jazeera has had some pretty decent articles about European Roma and our struggles, but I am extremely disappointed with the fact that before this was published no one even thought it was integral to mention the ethnic background of these girls because it is incredibly relevant.Â
Edit: BacÄuâs Roma population is only about 2% of the entire county, yet we make up most of the human trafficking victims. How can a statistic like that simply be overlooked?! That is either intentional or piss poor journalism.Â

indians light clay oil lamps, known as diyas or deepas, in celebration of the third day of diwali. known as the festival of lights, diwali, which begins this year on october 21 (a day earlier in south india), lasts for five days.Â
what originated as a festival to mark the last harvest of the year and seek the divine blessing of lakshmi, the goddess of wealth, has over the centuries become a national festival enjoyed by most indians regardless of faith. (consider that india is the second most populous muslim nation on the planet)

shout out to the vietnamese kids named phuc, dam, bich, son, dat, nga and so much more for enduring the namecalling and jokes about your name; youâre strong and beautiful.
& ÄĂŽng and dủng
lemme tell yall, my mom came to america when she was around 4 y/o and went to school in america and the white kids made jokes about her name becus her name was MyDung. when she was old enough she changed her legal name to a more âacceptableâ one becus she was afraid it wouldnt b seen professional in america. she was too embarrassed to say her name out loud. when she did have to, sheâd say it quietly. ever since i was a kid i would notice her behavior when ppl asked her name. so yeah fuckin SHOUTOUT to vietnamese kids w/ vietnamese names who get teased, yall amazing
Alright, this post has been going around and I think itâs high time for a lesson in Vietnamese. People who tease foreigners about their names, sit the fuck down and let me show you what those names mean.
_ âPhĂșcâ (Phuc) means phĂșc Äức, phĂșc háșu, háșĄnh phĂșc - kindness, merit and happiness. _ âÄamâ, âÄĂ mâ (Dam) mean yĂȘn tÄ©nh, yĂȘn lĂČng, an tĂąm - tranquility, calmness, relief. _ âBĂchâ (Bich) means ngá»c bĂch, ngá»c lỄc báșŁo - emerald, jade (can be understood as both the color and the precious gemstones). _ âSÆĄnâ (Son) means nĂși, máșĄnh máșœ vĂ uy nghiĂȘm như nĂși - mountains, as strong and majestic as the mountains. _ âÄáșĄtâ (Dat) means thĂ nh ÄáșĄt, váș» vang - success, honor, glory. _ âNgaâ (Nga) means xinh Äáșčp, tá»t Äáșčp - beauty, kindness. _ âÄĂŽngâ (Dong) means mĂča ÄĂŽng, hưá»ng ÄĂŽng - winter, East. _ âDĆ©ngâ (Dung) means dĆ©ng mĂŁnh, anh dĆ©ng - strength, power, bravery. _ âDungâ (Dung) means xinh Äáșčp, yĂȘu kiá»u - beauty, elegance, grace.
Can you see it? Can you see how beautiful these names are? And you dare compare them to your vulgar profanities?
Names are extremely important in Vietnamese culture. They represent the virtues, qualities, characteristics that parents want their children to possess. They represent the hopes and dreams of Vietnamese parents. THEY REPRESENT A VERY HUMAN BEING.
WHEN YOU TEASE SOMEONE ABOUT THEIR NAME, YOU ARE NOT ONLY INSULTING THEM, YOU ARE MAKING THEM ASHAMED OF THEMSELVES, OF THEIR OWN NAME AND THEIR OWN LANGUAGE, EVEN THEIR OWN ORIGIN.
DO NOT MAKE FUN OF OUR PEOPLE, DO NOT MAKE FUN OF OUR LANGUAGE AND DO NOT MAKE FUN OF OUR CULTURE.Â
