when the silence took life and grew like a living thing between them, vanessa found her throat dry of words, there was an uneasiness settling there now and she did not know why she hesitated to shatter the quiet as she once did. she was not naive to believe that her sudden confessions would be met with full understanding and solutions. though she had expected an immediate dismissal of such things, he was proving her assumptions to be incorrect. she pulled her eyes away from him, finding the fire’s dance to be far more inviting. perhaps that was the solve she was searching for; scorched flesh, a cleanse of this impure life she had led. then he spoke again, breaking the silence and her trance, but she still fixed her eyes on the flames.

❛ it was not sir malcolm’s idea, that fault belongs to mr. lyle. ❜ vanessa did not know why she sought to defend sir malcolm when mr. sumner’s tasked him with the blame. ❛ i do not want to believe that sir malcolm would ever put me in harms way willingly, but perhaps his subconscious does this for the wrongs i have caused him. ❜ vanessa felt the air change and regret built inside her and she could not stop it from spreading, much like a weed does in a garden. ❛ i did not come as a patient, doctor. ❜ she was aware of how her voice became colder, ❛ i am sorry to have intruded on you, nonetheless, i appreciate you giving me refuge from the rain. ❜ vanessa shrugged the blanket from her shoulders, feeling too warm now.

❛ may i use your washroom? ❜ vanessa bundled the blanket into her arms and stood to her feet, ❛ and where would you like me to discard this? it is rather wet now, and i would not trust it to dry as such. ❜ vanessa had not looked him directly in the eyes. she was abashed by her confession and hid within herself. it was a long night and rest was a welcome destination, ❛ you would not happen to have a robe or a change of clothes i might borrow? ❜

he turned her words, her expression and every minuscule movement she made over and over in his head. a curse it was to overthink, yet here he was, his mind a buzz with paranoia and something akin to rage. bury it, sumner, bury it. he allowed a peace to settle inside him. a temporary solve, but a solve. he could not understand how she could defend sir malcolm, though had it been any other time he himself would be jumping to sir malcolms defense. a true gentleman, he once called him. he admired him in a way, but this betrayal cut deep. a childish way to think, but he could not undo his brain and rewire it in a way that made him more mature. he would swallow his pride and accept that he did not receive an invitation. ❛ of course, i never meant to accuse. i only meant to say — ❜ he cut himself off. it didn’t matter and he was growing weary of even thinking of sir malcolm. his chest was already heavy mourning the lack of an invitation.

he should have bit his tongue. he was punishing himself. why did he refuse this? why would he not allow himself one thing? … why do you deserve it? ❛ oh, yes. of course, i only meant… ❜ he placed his pipe in it’s stand. his arms reaching now to the soaked blanket. ❛ give that here, i will take care of it in the morning… ❜ he hadn’t been ready for guests, his house needed to be cleaned, and desperately. he took the blanket in his arms and started to walk off. ❛ i’ll show you to the washroom. forgive me… i should have cleaned a bit more. ❜

vanessa breathed in deeply, letting the scent in the air permeate through her. she wanted a anchor, a guide back to herself in case those of the otherworldly sought her mortal flesh. she watched as mr.sumner’s eyes flitted over her. there was no deep seated desire that he was hiding, no… there was something different on the surface of his face that vanessa was having a hard time deciphering. she only knew that she did not want to suffer his scorn. she did her best to try and soften her features. the seance had taken more than it gave, but she wanted to speak of it, to draw light to the shadows that haunted her.

vanessa felt her mouth curve into a small smile. it was not of satisfaction of the discovery, but simply of knowing that she was right of her assumptions. mr. sumner was not fond of mr. chandler, perhaps it was mr. chandler’s volatile nature that led him to distrust him. jealousy was too easy to assume, and he had dismissed it before it lingered in the afterthoughts of her mind. ❛ i will hold caution for him, as you suggest. ❜ she placed her hands in her lap and cleared her throat.

the rise of emotion in his face caught her off guard. but what had she expected. sir malcom had taken this man of science and hoisted him head first into the supernatural. he made him look at things that science did not readily explain. when the silence broke by his voice, vanessa listened without interruption. she was surprised to know that vampires fascinated him rather than broke him, ❛ just now i was with sir malcom, and we attended a seance… when the woman called for the spirits to come, i felt them invade my body and then i was an outsider to my flesh—their puppet to use as they wished. ❜ vanessa closed her eyes and reimagined that place. the voices that had come out of her, and the way they had shifted her body and lifted it from the ground, ❛ i suppose it’s not right to say that i am cursed.. but i do lack the control i wish to possess in times like this. ❜ vanessa frowned and looked down at the way her hands fidgeted with the ends of the blanket, ❛ i feel like an open door, one that has not learned how to close and keep the evil at bay—but instead, i allow it past without ever checking if it is safe. ❜

science and supernatural had mixed before; as he was sure henry drax was not human. he was far from it. he was the devil, and while many who play at religion would argue religion and supernatural were not the same patrick would disagree. as a man of science he knew best in these cases, there were two categories; and, unfortunately for them, religion and myth fell into the same one. that isn’t to say there were no similarities to the real world experiences; all tales are told with a pinch of truth. at least, that is what patrick believed. he puffed on his pipe left her words fall into him, restraining himself from looking at her as though she were insane. he knew there was some truth to the words she said; though, admittedly, his mind stayed on the fact that sir malcolm had not trusted him enough to bring him along to the party — a hint of jealousy.

❛ sir malcolm willingly put you in danger? i would assume he knew you capable of this. he mentioned before knowing you as a child, and if that were the case... ❜ it was unfathomable. he tuts and shakes his head, blowing smoke into the clean air. ❛ in times such as these… ❜ his nerves alight with something now. something he deems anxiety and swallows it down best he can. he’d not known how to let people in and he’d spent so long pushing people away that sharing any details of himself became more painful than he cared to admit. ❛ i could prescribe you a small dose of laudanum. ❜ he stands now, begins to head to his desk. ❛ that is why you came yes? you require my aid. ❜ he knew that's not why but instinctively he pushes. back pressed to the wall, fear clung to his features. please do not get in… please do not see me in all my pieces. ❛ i will make up the guest room, miss ives. ❜

he waited a moment, hoping not to see a dejected look on her face. hoping instead for a smile; but was he worthy of a smile yet? he had dismissed her, and now he shamed himself internally. ❛ i believe you. although the whole thing is entirely unbelievable… i have — ❜ he thought then of the volunteer and the events that transpired, a chill ran through him and suddenly his leg aches. ❛ seen what you deal with. and though they were physical, whilst this… i believe you; nevertheless, you need rest. the laudanum... it helps me sleep. ❜

there is something so unnerving about the way the dark caresses you in the presence of others yet, it is entirely a secret. it is almost violating. vanessa had always been a victim of her desires and a servant of a higher evil, just a pawn to a shadowed hand. it was against her innocent nature as a child to be lured into the arms of monsters. however, as she aged into a woman, she allowed these sinister creatures to linger like animals in her mind, unrestrained by chains or forces of any other nature. it is due to this dark desire inside her that she found herself soaked and in front of patrick sumner’s door. her dress clinging to her body, taking imagination away from the eye of the beholder. she could not remember the in-between before she came to his door, only the cause of it.

mr. sumner was of course a gentleman and invited her inside. she crossed the threshold into his abode. it was colder than she expected. he had mentioned his time spent abroad on a whaling vessel in a icy terrain. perhaps his body was still adapting back to warmer temperatures. she made a mental note to inquire of this further at a later time. vanessa did not feel like she was in the right headspace to lean into the normalcy of that topic. besides, she knew the good surgeon would possibly redirect the questioning back to her. she at the moment, was the odd spectacle in the room—the one who ought to be questioned. she felt the chill start to leave her as he brought her to his fireplace in what she imagined to be his study. he then wrapped a blanket delicately around her shoulders, which she shifted tighter around her body.

❛ mr. chandler has done me no wrong… i assure you that much at least. ❜ vanessa offered a weak smile that lacked the conviction she wished to push a crossed to him. she did not mention mr. chandler further, it was clear to her that mr. sumner did not have a slight bit of fondness for their american companion, ❛ i have much to say outside of the logic that you hold so dear. ❜ she cleared her voice and looked off into the fire. ❛ what would you say to me if i told you that i feel cursed? ❜ vanessa did not pull her eyes away from the dancing flame, they widened as she recalled the moments right before her body had been possessed by another’s soul, ❛ would you think i had a touch of madness if i told you that sometimes spirits and darker forces speak through me like a mouthpiece? ❜ vanessa looked to mr. sumner and searched his expression, ❛ tell me truly what you make of this and i will tell you what has overcome me so swiftly, ❜ her voice was rasped, barely above a whisper as she spoke.

the way she moved was inhuman; he tried desperately to ignore it. he wanted to see the good in her, as she had only shown that to him. the coldness of his home had not bothered him but he quickly noticed the chill when her shivering did not halt. he added more fire to the fire. she needed to be warm; and he felt his eyes heavy with the desperation of sleep. he waited for what felt like hours, she had sat shivering and staring at him, eyes crazed like she was possessed. was she possessed? it wasn’t something he could easily dismiss as he had just witness vampires, things which were not meant to be real. things which could not be explained away with science. that which should be able to explain all. it left him breathless, but not entirely surprised.

❛ perhaps not you… ❜ he mumbled into his pipe. he had no love for mr. chandler, but he could not say he hated the man. disinterest was the proper feeling, and it was the feeling that sir malcolm had told him to retain, so he clung to it like a child handed a gift from their grandparent. his knuckles white and his heart elated. he couldn’t say he was fond of any of their found comrades in this hunt for mina. ❛ but me. i do not care for him, and i have learned better than to trust men like him. i hope you heed my advice, he is not a trustworthy man. ❜ a beat. ❛ and not simply because sir malcolm likes him. ❜ another beat. ❛ i do not get jealous of men, or for men. or women. i do not get jealous. i simple do not like him. ❜ he nodded. ❛ that is all. ❜

he waited, listened and drank deep her words. steadying them within his chest which was wild with thoughts. his head even worse. he stared at her now, hoping his gaze would catch to the flame but his eyes found her far more intriguing. ❛ if that were true, i… well everything i know would simply be undone… yet, after what you showed me before… that was real. it was real. i do not know how to think, in fact i was sat at my fireplace to come to terms with it. to wonder why i found the vampires fascinating while i find a man like henry draw frightening. ❜ he catches himself. ❛ if you are touched — it is beyond me. it is … supernatural… ❜ he felt silly saying it because science could not explain it. ❛ what do they say to you? or rather, through you? ❜

for hours now he has sat in front of his fireplace, awake and dreaming. nightmares keep him from rest, so instead he dream’s of what sleep might feel like. he tries to recall a time he could close his eyes and not freeze. the chill stayed with him, but worst of all henry drax stayed with him. his eyes, that of a killer, stared at him whenever he closed his own. earlier in the day he had experienced vampires for the first time; thanks to vanessa and sir malcolm. he tried to pass blame completely but it was his own curiosity that brought him to that point. still, they did not instill fear inside of him like henry drax did. patrick found something comforting in their animalistic nature as creatures of appetite. but when someone who is meant to be the same as him: human? can commit such atrocities for the sake of just doing? it is unfathomable. it is inhuman.

he was close with sir malcolm and was building rapport with vanessa. he felt she understood him in a way addicts understand each other. they have a desire, a secret urge to betray their own nature. he desperately wants to take a larger dose of laudanum and finally find rest in his unconscious state because he cannot get to sleep by himself and is afraid to sleep lest one of the monsters get him; vampire or henry drax. while lost in thought is when he gets startled by a rap at the door, a sharp gasp breathed in quickly, steadying his heart with a hand pressed firmly to his chest and when the anxiety subsides he quickly goes to answer it, cautiously. when he sees its vanessa he feels his heart skip, it was only natural wasn’t it? she was a gorgeous woman — he tried to not let his emotions get the better of him; and, too, his own animalistic instincts. ❛ miss ives? ❜ he says to her when the door opens, he stands and stares for a moment. ❛ it is pouring. please… come in. ❜ he takes her in. looking her up and down. ❛ you are soaked, vanessa. what on earth happened? ❜

he leads her back to his fireplace and wraps a blanket over her. brows now knit together with worry. he let his mind go too far; his sickness was overthinking. it overtook him and his mind ran wild with terror. ❛ was it that … american? ❜ he did not bother to hide the disdain in his tone; mr. chandler was less a gentleman than many men patrick had met before; he was, luckily for patrick, a touch above henry drax himself, that being only because he played at being a gentleman; albeit poorly. ❛ you can speak to me, vanessa. ❜ he sits in his chair and picks up his pipe from the side table, slips it between his lips and lights it.

when patrick spoke jade gave him his full attention like he did no other. he wasn’t sure why he was so drawn to patrick’s way of speaking, but he had been caught up in the sound of his voice now and that made his chest feel tight with a want he’d not felt in a long time or made space for. jade swallowed hard and he scoffed at the knowledge that the towns hospital couple had allowed randall a space in their ‘home’, ❛ oh? have they gotten him to behave in a way donna couldn’t? ❜ jade rolled his eyes, ❛ that’s incredibly rude and unprofessional on their part, but… ❜ jade’s brows perked up and he canted his head, ❛ perhaps having a doctor closer to town would save a lot more lives. ❜ he looked to patrick to gauge his thoughts on this, ❛ well, as i said… you’re welcome here, and you’re welcome to the bed—i can hardly sleep anyway. ❜

at the mention of the matthews jade felt himself growing agitated. they were possibly the worst family to ever exist with in a nightmare town. ❛ something about trying to find out where the wires were coming from. ❜ jade reached for a near empty bottle of liquor and downed what remained, ❛ it was very clear from the beginning that nothing in this town makes any fucking sense. ❜ jade shook his head and his gaze softened when his eyes fell back onto patrick, ❛ no no… i insist… or at least switch off with me on it… deal? ❜

jade was absorbed in his own incessant mind. ever since he came to this town he was hallucinating—seeing dead people, things that weren’t there and sometimes those things reached out to him as if they could physically make contact. he wasn’t sure what might happen if he actually let those nightmares close enough. patrick’s voice tore him from his mind, his voice was pleasant to jade, even through his frustrations. jade had grown irritated with most of the town, but patrick did not treat him like he was a mad man ranting—he respected his theories despite all logic. he was smart enough to know that all reason could be thrown out in a place where nothing made sense.
