𝐢𝐭 𝐰𝐚𝐬 𝐚𝐥𝐰𝐚𝐲𝐬 𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐚𝐭 𝐧𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐨𝐫 𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐥𝐲 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐛𝐞𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐝𝐚𝐰𝐧 𝐛𝐫𝐨𝐤𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐬𝐮𝐠𝐚𝐫 𝐜𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐞𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐟𝐢𝐧𝐝 𝐫𝐞𝐦𝐦𝐢𝐜𝐤 𝐢𝐧 𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐫𝐨𝐨𝐦.  just like the myths, sun was hard for vampires to roam around in, and the light didn’t make it easy for them to hunt anyway.  though, remmick was different from the movies.  for the most part he could roam around in the day, so long as he avoided direct sunlight.  california was probably a hard place for him to be, but he was a musician at heart and his fans found him aloof.  in fact, he wasn’t just a vampire.  there were other things about remmick that sugar had only learned from him.  needless to say, he was one of the most interesting individuals that sugar had ever met.

sugar had entered his room expecting to find remmick seated on his couch or somewhere in the bedroom.  with the forecast reading as it was, sugar always expected remmick around this hour, and apart of him felt worried when he didn’t find him.  they had gotten so comfortable sharing each others space, that when sugar didn’t find him in the usual spots, he wondered where he could be and if he might be moving on now.  after all, california was sugar’s current place of residence, and remmick might be destined to find a place with a little less sun.

𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐜𝐚𝐬𝐞 𝐰𝐚𝐬 𝐜𝐥𝐨𝐬𝐞𝐝 𝐧𝐨𝐰,   𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐜𝐚𝐬𝐞𝐬 𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐝 𝐨𝐧 𝐡𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐲 𝐧𝐨𝐭𝐞𝐬.  𝐬𝐮𝐠𝐚𝐫 𝐡𝐚𝐝 𝐭𝐨 𝐠𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐛𝐚𝐝 𝐧𝐞𝐰𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐜𝐥𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐲 𝐡𝐚𝐝 𝐛𝐞𝐞𝐧 𝐬𝐨 𝐮𝐩𝐬𝐞𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐲 𝐫𝐞𝐟𝐮𝐬𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐨 𝐩𝐚𝐲 𝐡𝐢𝐦.  𝐬𝐮𝐠𝐚𝐫 𝐝𝐢𝐝𝐧’𝐭 𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡,   he understood the pain of losing a loved one,   no matter the circumstances.  after that sour moment,   sugar thought he’d meet up with one of his friends.  he asked buck to meet him for drinks at the hotel where he was staying.  sugar hadn’t got attached to new york like he had la,   but the service at the hotel was nice and the rooms were fancy enough with a overview of the city.

sugar noticed buck as soon as he entered the room,   he dressed different now from when they met,   however,   he had distinct facial features that made it hard for him to be mistaken from someone else,   he was easily one of the most handsome men sugar had ever seen.  sugar raised a hand and smiled to get buck’s attention to him and turned to ask the bartender for drinks for the two of them.  whiskey was always a fair choice.  sugar watched as buck settled in the seat next to him and his smile grew a little bit more.

𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐧𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐰𝐚𝐬 𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐚𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐬𝐰𝐢𝐟𝐭𝐥𝐲,   𝐬𝐮𝐠𝐚𝐫 𝐡𝐚𝐝 𝐥𝐨𝐬𝐭 𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐤 𝐨𝐟 𝐡𝐨𝐰 𝐦𝐮𝐜𝐡 𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞 𝐡𝐚𝐝 𝐩𝐚𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐝 𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐡𝐮𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐡𝐚𝐝 𝐟𝐞𝐥𝐥 𝐭𝐨 𝐫𝐮𝐢𝐧.   𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐥𝐲,   𝐢𝐭 𝐰𝐚𝐬𝐧’𝐭 𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐨𝐟 𝐡𝐮𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐰𝐚𝐬 𝐥𝐨𝐬𝐭.   just a fraction of the world was forgotten about.   seemed cruel to leave people to their fates.   it was the reason why sugar refused to leave all those years prior.   there was only a small part of him that regretted it.   sugar took the small notebook from his pocket and began writing.   he had ran out of the ones that he brought from home a long time ago,   and the old paper was sometimes too fragile to write on,   but there were some notebooks that withstood time and ruin.   sugar often wrote down his experiences for the day while the others were away.   he knew that they would be returning to their temporary place of residence soon.   sugar knew they would have probably found people to perform charity on and possibly bring back someone entirely new.   sugar hated violence,   but he understood that this world was born of it and he didn’t try to change the minds of those brought up in the cruelty of this world,   so he took this opportunity to learn how humanity adapts to such chaos.

𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐲 𝐬𝐜𝐞𝐧𝐞 𝐝𝐢𝐝 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐬𝐮𝐢𝐭 𝐬𝐮𝐠𝐚𝐫,   𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐛𝐲 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐥𝐨𝐨𝐤𝐬 𝐡𝐞 𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐞𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐝 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐨𝐛𝐞𝐫 𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐲 𝐠𝐨𝐞𝐫𝐬,   𝐡𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐭𝐞𝐥𝐥 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐲 𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐬𝐨 𝐭𝐨𝐨.  𝐛𝐮𝐭 𝐬𝐮𝐠𝐚𝐫 𝐰𝐚𝐬𝐧’𝐭 𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐠𝐨 𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐢𝐧𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐩𝐢𝐜𝐮𝐨𝐮𝐬𝐥𝐲,   𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐬𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞𝐬 𝐦𝐚𝐝𝐞 𝐢𝐭 𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐲 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐡𝐢𝐦 𝐭𝐨 𝐬𝐩𝐨𝐭 𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐠𝐞𝐭.  that being said,   it wasn’t as if he was a sore thumb in the midst,   after a few glances people usually went about their business.  sugar had done a lot of asking around and found out that james cook worked for a man named louie who worked out of manchester,   and louie was the big boss to the drug dealers he had employed.  louie wasn’t big time yet,   just a big fish in a small pond,   but sugar would still keep his head down,   he didn’t like being the target of anyone.

karen had been kind enough to offer pictures of both freddie and james for reference,   but obviously they would be aged now—well,   james would be.  unfortunately freddie did not get to get older,   and that’s the piece of the puzzle that james held,   what happened to freddie? how did he die? sugar took the photo of james from his jacket pocket and glanced at a man who seemed to fit the appearance.  he had longer hair now and whatever happiness he had felt in the picture had been wiped away like a clean slate.  he looked melancholic now,   and sugar could tell by one glance that this man wasn’t a killer.  some of the people in bristol thought he might have been capable of mindless murder,   not many people had good things to say about him.  sugar figured he must have been a bit rambunctious in his youth,   because they talked about how this young man brought a storm of chaos and rowdy energy.  the man sugar saw now looked deflated,   grief struck and empty.

𝐬𝐮𝐠𝐚𝐫 𝐩𝐮𝐬𝐡𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐜𝐫𝐨𝐰𝐝 𝐭𝐨𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐝𝐬 𝐡𝐢𝐦,   𝐛𝐮𝐭 𝐝𝐢𝐝 𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐛𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐥𝐨𝐨𝐤 𝐥𝐢𝐤𝐞 𝐡𝐞 𝐰𝐚𝐬 𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐝 𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐡𝐢𝐦.  𝐬𝐮𝐠𝐚𝐫 𝐝𝐢𝐝𝐧’𝐭 𝐰𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐬𝐩𝐨𝐨𝐤 𝐡𝐢𝐦 𝐧𝐨𝐰 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐡𝐞 𝐟𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝 𝐡𝐢𝐦,   but he was aware that some people might think he looked like a cop.  sugar quickly loosened his tie,   unbuttoned the top of his shirt to make him look more like he was relaxed,   a business man just looking to catch a quick relief for the night.  when he got to james cook he kept a good distance from him,   but did a small wave to be seen.

the sun was just beginning to set,   the city was scurrying to find the end of the day as sugar cruised down the street feeling the night air blow through his hair.  the city could be a dangerous place at night,   but it was also beautiful.  humans were beautiful.  sugar felt himself starting to feel like them,   crossing over lines he wasn’t supposed to cross in order to feel more.  nothing felt impossible now,   except for maybe going home.  that felt like a dream.  in fact,   sugar often dreamt of his home,   of djen,   and of her disappearance too.  anytime djen passed through,   he felt an unshakable urge to give up on everything.  no,   not tonight.

𝐬𝐮𝐠𝐚𝐫 𝐚𝐫𝐫𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐨 𝐩𝐚𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐤’𝐬 𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐬𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐨𝐨𝐤 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐛𝐥𝐚𝐜𝐤 𝐛𝐚𝐠 𝐨𝐟 𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐦𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐬𝐮𝐩𝐩𝐥𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐩𝐚𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐫 𝐬𝐞𝐚𝐭.  he fixed his hair instinctively before knocking on the front door,   glancing around to see if patrick had taken his advice and gotten security cameras.  if he did,   they were well hidden,   which was a good thing.  sugar glanced down for a moment,   clearing his throat and allowing a smile when the door opened.  he was happy to see him after all,   perhaps one of his only friends left.

𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐡 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐤𝐲 𝐟𝐮𝐥𝐥 𝐨𝐟 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐬,   𝐬𝐮𝐠𝐚𝐫 𝐰𝐚𝐥𝐤𝐬 𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐲 𝐭𝐡𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐜𝐚𝐦𝐩.  𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐠𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝 𝐰𝐚𝐬 𝐰𝐞𝐭 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐬𝐨𝐟𝐭 𝐝𝐮𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐚 𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐦.  𝐬𝐮𝐠𝐚𝐫 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐚𝐦𝐞 𝐠𝐚𝐫𝐛 𝐚𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐝𝐚𝐫𝐤𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠’𝐬 𝐦𝐨𝐬𝐭 𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐞 𝐠𝐮𝐚𝐫𝐝𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐛𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐝 𝐢𝐧 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐨𝐥𝐝𝐢𝐞𝐫𝐬,   the oprichniki.  he didn’t want to draw suspicion to himself.  he approached the darkling’s tent and stood for a moment to listen for movement.  it seemed quiet,   but that didn’t mean it was empty.  ❛ it’s sugar. ❜  his voice was just above a whisper.  sugar’s eyes scoped out the people around,   and there were few eyes on him,   simply out of curiosity that quickly fizzled into nothing when they realized what he was,   just the way he preferred it when coming back to relay information.  he heard the darkling’s voice,   calm and smooth,   giving him the ‘okay’ to enter.

❛ sorry to bother you this late,  ❜  sugar removed the hat from his head and smoothed back stray strands of hair out of his face,   ❛ i think i might have solved one of your missing grisha problems. ❜  cause there were many problems to be had when it came to the grisha.  so many enemies.  sugar takes a piece of parchment from his jacket and held it out for the darkling’s observation.  it was rare when people didn’t display their reactions on their face.  the general had been one of those cases.  sugar could hardly tell when he was elated versus when he was upset.  anger was the easiest to spot.  he couldn’t help the twitch of his brow when if first came on,   and sugar suspected that it was on purpose.
