β : the wilds here were not forgiving or friendly to the average human, and miorine had long accepted that physically, she was painfully average.
average, but stubborn. she had goals in mind, and there were places she could yet accomplish them, like the grand tree central to the cotes ward. it had defied comprehension for a tree so large to exist without inside influence, and she had long wondered if it was another experiment of their captors. more captivating yet was the idea that something could grow so large and vibrant. surely there was something there that could be applied to her currently measly tomato vines?
the strange hanging about, though, was unwanted, even if her intent was good. she didn't need any distractions.
'can't you find another place to loiter? i'm busy.' she doesn't look up from where she's kneeled, snapping pictures of the sprouts that arise without pattern or reason across the roots of the tree.
"Here you go! I have a feeling today is going to be a special day, so I brought a little bit of extra treats for you all."
Mercedes practically beams when the cats meow seemingly in response, and takes it as a showing of their gratitude. She remains seated on her heels, hands folded neatly in her lap as she watches over the felines to make sure they get their fill.
A small, surprised 'oh!' escapes her at the sound of a new voice behind her, the woman looking over her shoulder to look at Miorine and immediately brightening.
"There used to be a lot of stray cats where I'm from," she says, smile fond as she gestures for the girl to join her. "It takes a little bit of time, but once they're used to you, they're very friendly! Would you like to try?"
β : she's still quietly amazed by the woman's calm around the cats and, if first impressions mean anything, in general. were that miorine gave off such an aura herself, but she's spent a life cultivating an air of aloofness that works against her now. perhaps the cats detected that in her.
'i didn't have any pets where i lived.' animals, yes, and perhaps they were pets to earth house too, but farm animals nonetheless used for that purpose. she'd had a few pets when she was younger but... not for long before her father saw to the end of that. it must have been nice, to have all these cats roaming free around you.
'...yes, i'd like that.' her expression did not change into a smile, but the hardness of her usual steel gaze softens just a bit. 'how do you do it, then?'
β Each breath of Miorine's was felt by Suletta. From the moment they had met she had always felt like Miorine was an incredibly strong person. She could do things that Suletta couldn't, brave challenges she couldn't even imagine overcoming. Even now, after everything that happened, she admired her more than anyone in the universe.
But when they were like this she remembered just how small Miorine truly was. She carried all of her burdens with her head held high, but she was just a girl. They both were. They were only teenagers and yet they both had blood on their hands, they had hurt each other, they had braved things no one else their age ever would.
And yet in the end they always found each other again. She took Miorine at her word that she'd be fine.
"I guess... that's a difficult question? Technically we've been in the city for about one year, right? When we first arrived I remembered as far as Plant Quetta though. A couple of months ago... I remembered our reunion at Beneritt HQ... and me getting ready to sortie in the Calibarn." And so it was a little confusing at times. "I didn't want to worry you by mentioning it though. My feelings for you haven't changed, Miss Miorine. I was... worried if you weren't in the same situation as me that you might think I was lying, or that you'd be upset if I told you anything..."
Considering the state Miorine had been in after what happened in Quinharbor she didn't want to dump that on her if she couldn't remember.
β : by now she had gathered her thoughts and regained some sense of composure; miorine relinquished her deathgrip on suletta and fully stepped away to look her over. something was off, but she could not entirely place it - perhaps she was still blinded by the haze of that crushing despair that always seemed ready to weigh her down once again. she needed to focus - there was no room to make errors here either.
'one year...' she cleared her throat as she folded her arms across her chest, gaze cast downward in thought. 'and you say you remembered everything gradually?'
it had been the same for her, though she didn't say it aloud. what did that mean? collective amnesia, somehow inflicted by their captors? they already had the power to - if she could bring herself to believe it - kidnap them from across dimensions. what was the erasure of memory by comparison?
'suletta.' she looked upward to the other girl's face, about to simultaneously chastise and reassure when she sees it and stops short. 'what is that on your face?'
β It probably hadn't been very hard to find Suletta. After all, the nights she didn't spend at Miorine's, she followed them up by meeting Miorine at her place first thing in the morning. She'd already let herself in, fumbling around her bride's home to try and clean it up a little.
Miorine wasn't very good at picking up after herself and she had promised to clean her room. Of course Suletta would never say that aloud.
"Oh, good morning Miss Miorine!" She'd thought to greet her on sight, but was met with the force of being grabbed and held. Suletta stumbled back a step but managed to weather the embrace. For someone who was quick to fluster a lot of the time, she could tell when Miorine was upset about something.
She became very clingy, for one. It took the Holder a moment to process what was happening but she eventually wrapped her bride up in a hug of her own. "...Right." It was better just to accept when Miorine didn't want to express her feelings vocally. It was rude to pry, and she knew that she'd be told eventually.
Suletta gave her fiancΓ©e a squeeze of reassurance. "I'm here. Whatever you need, Miss Miorine, I'm here for you." Her words were soft and understanding. It wasn't the first time they had embraced like this.
β : in this moment, the world ceased to exist; it was just miorine and suletta, entwined in soft, blessed quietude. she breathed into suletta's chest slowly, in and out, even and measured breaths to keep herself calm and centered. for the moment, she could keep herself rooted here, with her groom to keep her firmly on the ground.
'i'm fine.' her hands grasped tighter on suletta, in stark opposition to her words. 'i will be fine. i promise.'
and then, after what felt like an eternity, she pulled away, and looked up at suletta with a small, cautious smile.
'suletta, how long do you think we've been here?' it's not a question asked with any sadness or hope behind it, intended as an open-ended inquiry: what happens next? miorine has, for the time being, quelled her own doubts, but the world they've left behind planted seeds of its own in her heart and her head without permission. does suletta worry about it too? she wonders. is she worried for what will happen here and what will happen there, with or without them?

β : there is a melancholy in her heart that only surfaces when miorine is alone or left to her thoughts. she's grateful that those moments are few and far between - there is too much to do and see and live here in this not-earth-not-space - but every so often they strike her, and there is only so much she can burden she can unload upon suletta. being outside helps, with the sunlight warm upon her shoulders and the air fresh and crisp on her face, but even so, she struggles.
there's a woman in the area of the apartments she lives in (part-time, anyway, given how much of her time she spends with suletta) who feeds the local stray cats. it's peaceful to sit and watch from a distance, but today miorine approaches and, swallowing down her sadness, attempts a conversation.
'how do you get them to let you be so close? i thought they were feral.'
@echoesofcoral / starter call.
β : there's still a lot to be done - or, rather, miorine feels the weight on her shoulders to do more on this never-sleeping isle. perhaps that weight is riddled with guilt, but it's enough to fuel her resolve. it helps to imagine her lousy father staring impassively with that eternally disappointed stare all the while she's here.
she's still standing on the front doorstep of her apartment when the other person passes by. miorine's not the type to stare, but the other's appearance is... entrancing. that's not the right word, but nonetheless she's mesmerized by the scaling of their skin and the color of their eyes, all second only to the stony expression on their face. do not approach. she understands that universal meaning; she's used that one far too often herself.
when their head turns to catch her stare, she starts waving against her better judgement. suletta is rubbing off on her, just a little bit - she pulls her hand back down almost as quickly, her own face returning to that perpetually stern look she has trained herself to have.
'what? have you never seen someone wave before?'
@mercurywitch / starter call.
β : it's been quiet lately. miorine finds that she's been in something of a haze - and then the memories had flooded in. there's so much she wants to talk to suletta about, and it feels like there's just not enough time in the world for any of it.
or maybe here there is too much time. it gives her too much time to think by herself, alone with a whirl of emotion and stress and regret and guilt that is overwhelming. what happened to the world they left behind? what happened to everyone else?
when she spots suletta, all she does is rush forward, the only audible sound the clack of her shoes upon the tile floor, and collides with the other girl with a force that would have probably knocked anyone else over.
not suletta, though. miorine keeps her face buried in her chest to hide any stain of wretched emotion from bubbling up to the service. this is her anchor; suletta is a safe place now, she realizes.
'don't question me right now.'
posting a silly little ad as i sent in the request to have both miomio and yor taken off hiatus yesterday. i'll cap this at four, and they will be non-event as i haven't figured out if i am ready to dive into an event yet, even if it is a rerun!
β "Heehee!" The fact that Suletta was pleased with herself upon receiving Miorine's blessing was a little more than obvious thanks to the goofy little smile that she wore on her face. She had recently learned that she didn't need to be validated to feel like she deserved to be at her bride-to-be's side, but she was still allowed to find happiness in that validation, right?
The stars above the maze illuminated what fireflies and torches did not. Even though it was nighttime it was still hot and humid, but despite the fact that her hands were sweaty because of it she didn't even think for a second of letting go of Miorine's hand. Suletta knew that she wouldn't have wanted her to either.
"Alright, I'm okay with that. But..." She wasn't really going to lead; Suletta made that clear. Before Miorine knew what was happening Suletta had pulled her closer and laced their arms together. "I'll just give a little pull in the direction I want to go. We're going to do this together, right? Plus if you get tired..." This almost seemed like a jab at Miorine's lackluster athleticism. "I'll carry you. Is that okay?" She smiled reassuringly.
β : there was so much of suletta that she had come to love - her mannerisms, her smile, her enthusiasm, and now her newfound independence. something about how genuinely free she seemed invigorated miorine; if only she had been able to reach this point without the suffering along the way. a sense of guilt still lay buried in heart about hurting suletta like that.
but now wasn't the time to dwell on unhappy thoughts, not when there were new memories to be created together. together.
'your hands are clammy,' miorine remarks offhandedly. she squeezes the other girl's hand tighter, pushes in close as their arms are wound together. 'but so are mine.'
'i promise you won't have to carry me, suletta.' not that she doubts the other girl couldn't, but that miorine finds the idea faintly embarrassing - and yet, simultaneously, exhilarating. 'though i suppose i might have to lean on you if we start going in the wrong direction for too long.' a pause, then she adds, 'we should start moving. only if you're also ready.'

'i wonder if you can hire an interior decorator here.' does she have the money? probably not. will she come up with it if it's for her and suletta's home? absolutely. though if they did the painting themselves, it would probably be cheaper... she's drifting off into thought.
@sinbearing / starter.
'running away from your responsibilities as well?' her tone was likely as close to joking as miorine could manage (for anyone who wasn't suletta, anyway). while she bore guel no ill will beyond that which circumstance had forced upon them, it didn't mean she had to suddenly go easy on him.
'let me guess: you found suletta here first.' it isn't a question but rather a statement. she knows. she definitely knows.
β It really was like something out of an old storybook. A beautiful garden filled with flowers unlike anything Suletta had ever seen before arranged in a maze lit by magical lights. The school back home had been filled with amazing things, but not anything like this. The event was called Maze By Pixie Light and it was apparently popular with couples, which was exactly why Suletta had brought Miorine there.
Without telling her that part!
"What do you think, Miss Miorine? Did I pick something good?" She gave her fiancΓ©e's tiny hand a squeeze with her own, fingers intertwined. She hadn't let go of it since they'd left for the event together in fact. Now that she was standing beside Miorine not as a Holder but on her own terms, she'd wanted to make a big showing with a nice date.
Things back home were uncertain, but she knew the both of them could benefit from a little distraction. As long as they had each other here then things would be okay. She gave Miorine a little tug so that they were closer. "Are you ready to go in?"
@icebride
β : miorine had not initially wisened to suletta's plans until they had arrived to the maze. it was cute - she'd also read about how it was an activity that only couples could participate in. that was fine as well. the small smile that graced her lips was her own secret to yet keep from her dear groom.
truthfully, she might have gone with anything suletta had chosen, if only for the fact that she had had a difficult time being out of sight for too long. three messages a day only carried you so far, even if this place had been relatively more calm than their home world.
'i guess you did fine.' she squeezes suletta's hand back, though her features are uncolored by outward emotion. 'yes, i'm ready.'
'i think you should lead, seeing as this was your idea. our goal is just to get to the end, correct? together.'
i got like 5 indies following me since the finale and sorry but you're all getting blocked. i'm nervous enough about portraying a semi-popular character as-is (and if anyone ever read my rules i already said i'd be blocking indies ajgksjlgd). sorry!
canon point update coming soon once i stop crying over sule/mio.
βΆ In an effort to further understand Spirale, Aqua paid a visit to the much talked about Market Town. Apparently, they have everything in there despite the town's more fantastical aesthetic. Which made Aqua a tad uncomfortable, but nothing he couldn't handle in the moment. Spirale never ceases to remind him that he is just an ordinary person thrust into all of this.
His objective for the day was to simply scout the place out. Observe and take mental notes; see if something or someone could be of use to him here. Out of the corner of his eye he notices a young woman haggling with a salesman. No, haggling wouldn't be the right word for this.
It looked like she wanted nothing to do with this stall and yet...
"Then, I'll take those." Aqua's sudden declaration seems to have worked, momentarily distracting the suspicious salesman. "Junk like these will have their use. Rust is easy enough to polish off with the right know how so I don't mind it much."
To an outsider it may look like Aqua cut into the younger woman's intense haggling with this salesperson when in reality, he took some of the pressure off of her. Not that he knew if some otherworldly spell was at work or not but the shop owner seemed satisfied enough after Aqua made his purchase so he let them both go and on their way.
"...Sorry, you looked like you were in trouble there," he apologized to the shorter girl afterwards. "But... well, these really are worthless, huh?" Aqua gestured to one of two large plastic bags worth of junk and salvage he now unfortunately owned.
β : it wasn't as if she needed rescuing, but that didn't seem to be the young man's intent. if miorine was reading this right... and certainly enough, after walking away he had caught up with her and apologized for having done such a silly thing. not that she was unappreciative, but perhaps she also felt a slight shred of guilt that he had wasted his money for a junk haul.
'we could make some use out of these.' she reaches into one of the bags and pulls out a rusted screwdriver and a bent wrench. 'not worth the price he was charging, but with some polish they might pass.'
restoration of any sort is not a skill she possesses, but there are resources here, and she's willing to learn. she's not doing this out of some misguided desire to make up for involving him in a con artist's scheme - there's always something to be gained. move forward -
but that's a fool's saying.
'let's see what we can do. i'll assume if you have money to waste you also have the time to spare as well. come on.' she gestures towards the rest of the vast marketplace that is yet unexplored.

nero was quite happy that there was a theatre in spirale, she seemed more in her element. despite he constant bugging the owners of the theatre, it seemed like they gave up and just let nero do what she wanted to do. a win is a win! even if it meant that everyone would be annoyed with her, she got what she wanted.
of course with all of the room she had, she could finally rehearse the plays that she wanted to show off. it was the same play she had told praetor before, the really bad one. sadly, no one was here to witness such a fun story. or at least that is what nero thinks, upon turning around she catches her eye on on a young girl staring. maybe she could some positive feedback from her. the servant decides to walk up to where she is standing.
"i sure was! tell me young lady...what did you think of my performance so far? was it as wonderful as shakespeare's plays?" please humor her.
β : this was likely a mistake. perhaps she might have enjoyed watching in silence - from a distance, at that - but miorine had always preferred to keep to herself. it was easier that way, when anything you enjoyed was liable to be taken away from you. she might have enjoyed going to see a play, perhaps, under other circumstances.
though, she thought, these were technically different circumstances. she'd never been asked for critique of this sort before in her life, for starters.
'it was decent.' a bit more harsh than necessary, but she could soften the blow yet. you needed to encourage people to try their hardest, right? 'perhaps i need to see more.'
'you do need to hone your skill in order to be the best, right? then practice for an audience of one.'
@stellaumbra // starter call.
she had heard rumors of there being items from other worlds for sale in a marketplace somewhere within the wards. the real question was where - and how - to begin searching for such things when there was so much ground to cover? the market town had seemed like a solid start, but miorine had quickly realized this was far beyond the scope of her search capabilities. and so far there had been nothing that looked particularly... familiar.
a soft huff of a sigh escaped her, but she still persisted in what was likely to be a fruitless search. a display of well-worn tools and gadgets is all well and good, but not what she needs right now. the salesman - a man with a hat pulled on so tightly as to suspiciously cover his ears - is being terribly pushy, however.
'what do you think i'm going to do with a set of rusted tools and salvaged parts?'
'try fobbing your "wares" on someone else.' it was strange, how it felt like she couldn't leave, though... surely there wasn't some other force at play? she'd have laughed at magic before coming here, but now -
