Privilege as a System Systems and scale We live in societies, and societies are systems.Â
Letâs break down privilege based on how your society/system treats you: 1. You are rewarded for doing nothing, just for being there. Sometimes EVEN if you work against the system. 2. You are rewarded for working with the system, youâre punished for working against the system. 3. You are punished EVEN IF you work with the system and do what youâre supposed to do. Obviously, thereâs intersectionality, lots of different ways you can sit on this scale, and sometimes you get to be the exception, etc. Examples BUT letâs compare and contrast: Roman Polanski- convicted child rapist. Is world known movie director, has support from innumerable celebrities and movers and shakers in Hollywood. He is not merely given the option to work, he has people willing to put their reputations OUT THERE to speak up for him, even though heâs NEVER been punished for his crime. Oscar Grant - murdered black man. Was shot in the back while unarmed, compliant, face down, handcuffed with a second police officer on his back while several police stood near by. Roman Polanski has completely worked against the system, and while heâs not all in the clear, heâs got a LOT of people willing to ride or die for his rapist ass, and Oscar Grant was flat out murdered while doing EXACTLY what youâre âsupposedâ to do with the police - comply. (See also, http://bankuei.tumblr.com/post/24942537367/lets-talk-about-the-kumbayah-myth-in-the ) Realities Now, when you look at that scale, you can see the #1 people are happy with the system, even when they work against itâs rules, they still get good things from it. The system doesnât do SHIT for people in #3 at all, except exploit them. The fact that #1 or #3 exist as categories says everything we need to know about a lack of meritocracy. The people who are most invested in denying that this difference exists are the people who are benefiting. And letâs think about that- the people at #3 are making survival choices - the system punishes them no matter what they do, and everything is a coping mechanism, trying to survive under the abuser and bring down the least amount of pain. Now how does #1 and #3 interact? Easy, whenever there is a conflict of interests, the people higher up the ladder are favored OVER the people lower on it. Roman Polanski can rape a girl because heâs a man. Because heâs rich. Because heâs white. Because heâs straight. Etc. His âneedâ to rape overrides all of her human rights. (Not mentioning her name b/c thereâs definite issues about survivor broadcast. Obviously, you can Google.) Oscar Grant canât live because heâs black. Heâs poor. etc. Officer Johannes Mehserlesâ racism, fear of Black people, violent tendencies and male ego overrides Oscar Grantâs right to live. George Zimmermanâs murder of Travyon Martin is a perfect example- he may be Latino, but obviously his skin privilege (and legal access through judge father!) has gotten him a very different situation than if he was a Black man shooting an unarmed half-white latino boy. Laws, people, individuals, collectives Now hereâs the thing - itâs not clean cut categories- thereâs spectrums along the way, and intersectionality of different ways we exist within the system - you are higher up towards #1 in someways, and lower down towards #3 in others, but this isnât some zero-sum game where everyone actually equals out - some people sit at the intersections of #1 and do whatever the fuck they want and some people sit at the intersections of #3 and get fucked over every which way and no one gives a shit. And I say âsystemsâ, but thatâs society, thatâs people. Thatâs a community, a city, a state, a nation, who collectively either rewards someone, fucks over someone else, and most importantly, stands by while someone flaunts the rules OR stands by while someone is murdered and doesnât give a fuck. The change has to be BOTH the stated laws and rules AND the actual attitudes of the people involved. If you think some people arenât people⌠well, why would you try to protect their human rights? Meritocracy vs. Bullshit And it says everything to me when people spend all their energy and time focused on the people at the bottom of these hierarchies- black, brown, LGBT, poor, disabled - as the people to rail on instead of the people at the top - because when you do that, youâre participating in that punishment process, youâre making sure they stay at the bottom and âknow their placeâ. If you think the system is injust: 1. You need to attack the actions of the people in #1 who often make the rules and benefit from them 2. You need to stop punishing the people in #3 who sit below you in privilege Anything else is collaborating and upholding the system in the hopes of getting a little higher on a ladder, that in the end, is not actually a ladder- not everyone can get up and down it, thereâs always a limit because the people you end up supporting are those who are holding you down. Agreeing to throw chains on others so you get more comfortable chains doesnât free anyone, and will never see you free of chains either. http://bankuei.tumblr.com/post/25166227016/privilege-as-a-system

In Africa masks can be traced back to well past Paleolithic times. These art objects were, and are still made of various materials, included are leather, metal, fabric and various types of wood.
During celebrations, initiations, crop harvesting, war preparation, peace and trouble times, African masks are worn by a chosen or initiated dancer. It can be worn in three different ways: vertically covering the face: as helmets, encasing the entire head, and as crest, resting upon the head, which was commonly covered by material as part of the disguise. African masks often represent a spirit and it is strongly believed that the spirit of the ancestors possesses the wearer.
During the mask ceremony the dancer goes into deep trance, and during this state of mind he "communicate" with his ancestors. A wise man or translator sometimes accompanies the wearer of the mask during the ritual. The dancer brings forth messages of wisdom from his ancestors. Rituals and ceremonies are always accompanied with song, dance and music, played with traditional African musical instruments.
Sarah Gammon Bickford The first African American Female Utility Company owner. From a slave to the owner of a utility company. âSarah Gammon Bickford was born on Christmas Day, 1855. She started as a chambermaid, and became an administrator and entrepreneur.
She was born a slave on the Blair Plantation near Greensboro, North Carolina. After the Civil War she lived with an aunt in Knoxville, TN, and changed her last name to her auntâs name, Gammon. In 1870, Knoxville Judge John L. Murphy was appointed to a judicial post in Virginia City, Montana Territory, and Sarah, at the age of 15, was offered a job caring for the Murphy children. The family arrived in Virginia City, Montana in January 1871. During Virginia Cityâs gold rush, Sarah quickly found work as a chambermaid at Virginia Cityâs Madison House Hotel. In 1872, she married William Leonard Brown, a successful gold miner. They had two sons and a daughter. Within a few years, however, both her sons and her husband died of diphtheria. She and surviving child Eva relocated to Laurin, Montana Territory, where they lived with a merchant family. Two years later, Sarah married Stephen Bickford, a white man from Maine. The couple had four children, Elmer in 1884, Harriett in 1887, Helena in 1890, and Mabel in 1892.â http://www.aaregistry.org/historic_events/view/sarah-bickford-slave-owner-water-company

Show me ONE European nation (including this one) that has black people on all of its currency. Kemet (Egypt) had Black skinned, wooly haired men and women on its currency and was a black skinned wooly haired run and dominated society. The Moors had Black skinned, wooly haired men and women on their currency and major paintings and statues and the government was run by black skinned wooly haired dominated society and people. And now even MORE evidence about ancient Greece and RomeâŚthey werenât slaves OR second class citizens but its RULERS! The Europeans were the second class citizens and servantsâŚ

âI see humans but no humanity.â Corporations are dictatorships, they use war, they use murder, they use police-tactics in order to attain more power/profits. Cosmetics corporations encourage a racist euro-centric conception of beauty; this is why 300 million in Asia 200 million in Africa use skin whitening products.
According to Time Magazine, racism is one of the most prominent causes of poverty in the United States. Corporate influence over governments has destroyed any vestiges of a democratic process; democracy has been killed by the bankers. Corporate influence over public officials and their policies makes the entire voting process laughable. Corporate executives often become government officials and vice versa, making one happy family of corrupt thieves. Corporations are dictatorships, they use war, they use murder, they use police-tactics in order to attain more power/profits. Corporations want you to treat shopping like a lifestyle; itâs a lifestyle that makes them trillions and makes you broke. Fast food corporations destroy the human mind by weakening the human body; also, by encouraging material addiction. Corporations and governments are owned by the same people; this is why any Goldman Sachs graduate is guaranteed a lush government job. Corporations put short term profits ahead of the well being of workers and citizens. Corporations want a future where citizens avoid politics because âitâs not funâ like watching a poisonous Hollywood film. Corporations turn human beings into addicts to stuff, to drugs, to emotional facades, to mindless entertainment. Injustice Facts:Africa provide 90% of world resources and stil be poorest continent in the planet, African Americans make up only 13% of the U.S. population but they make up close to 50% of the prison population. Corporations must be seized by the populace through an organized, professional, revolution.
