This takes place the day after Runner Five arrives at Abel
You havenât been anywhere so simultaneously green and safe since the world ended. The inside of Mullins base was all concrete, dirt paths, and dying grass. You see nature all the time on your runs, but youâve forgotten how to enjoy it; always sharply focused on your goal and the surrounding undead.Â
Abel has a park. The trees are sparse and there are some tarps laid out- youâre not sure why, maybe to prevent mud in problem areas? But itâs within the walls and itâs sprawling. You hear birds overhead, feel the dappled sun filtering through the tree you pass beneath, onto your skin. The fresh earthy scent of leaves fills your lungs, and it brings back memories of the time you used to spend out in forests or by lakes.
Back when you would run for fun, this is what it was all about.Â
And the world is still here. Youâve lost so much and yet this piece of nature still exists, as if plucked from the past. The sorrow of what youâve lost and hope for what you can still build, donât battle and instead intertwine. They form some new emotion, potent and bittersweet, itâs overflowing in your chest. Â
Youâre not surprised Mullins isnât coming for you. They canât risk more personnel to retrieve one operative. At first you were frustrated, resigned to this reality, but by no means happy about it. But now, walking through a lovely park on a pleasantly cool day, you think maybe you could learn to settle in here. You never really had friends at Mullins anyway. Not that you intend to make them here either.Â
That radio operator, Sam, he invited you to come and talk with him any time; and, from what little you know of him, you do like him. But you lost everyone when the apocalypse started, youâre not eager to find new people to care about.Â
Still, you probably can expect a comfortable and easy working relationship with him, which you do appreciate. And he did save your life.Â
Maybe you should stop by the comms shack later after all, at least to thank him.Â
Man, itâs been a while since Iâve written sweet fluff, it feels good to give the characters some time to just be happy. This takes place between seasons 8 and 9, but thereâs only really major spoilers up to season 4
âIs it time now?âÂ
Sara had been asking variations of that question nonstop for the past hour.Â
âAlmost now. Fiveâll be here soon, then we can go. Here, letâs get your jumper on.â Sam knelt down to help her with the little zipper.Â
Seeing movies was a rare event in those times. The outdoor movie theatre had been built less than two years prior, and only operated a few select times since.Â
There was a knock at the door, and Sara excitedly ran up to greet Five. They tussled their fingers through her hair affectionately, and she immediately became distracted by the small box in their hand.Â
âWhatâs that?â
They grinned, sharing a glance with Sam, and opening the box, sliding several thin plastic tubes of dully colored liquid, into their hand.
Sam stepped up beside her, explaining, âthis is something from before Abel, Five managed to find a few on a run.â
They took one of the sticks and bent it, a spark of purple light appearing in the dimly lit cabin. She watched, fascinated, as they briskly shook the little tube, spreading the brilliant glow across its entire length.Â
âTheyâre glow sticks, you can wear them as bracelets.â They grinned, popping a connector on the end of it and fastening it around their wrist to demonstrate.
Awed, she stared at it. âCan I have one?â
After a brief pause, she quickly corrected herself.Â
âPlease, Magic Five, can I have glow sticks?âÂ
They grinned, handing her the little box. âTheyâre for youâ
___
The glow sticks kept her entertained for another fifteen minutes, and by the time they left, they were right on time to get there and be settled before the movie.Â
They met Paula and Maxine, fresh off their hospital shifts, at the theatre.Â
âHi Mummyâs!â Sara bounded up to them, immediately showing them the numerous colorful glowing bracelets covering her arms.
Maxine smiled. âWow, those are beautiful, honey.â She glanced knowingly at Five, asking Sara, âwhereâd those come from?â
âFive gave me them and I got to pick all the colors and I also chose Daddyâs, and one of Fiveâs!â Sam grinned, lifting the wrist with his green glow bracelet, and Five took their hand out of their pocket to show their stacked purple and pink ones. âI made a necklace for Pilpil, but Daddy says Pilpil needs to sleep now.âÂ
ââŚI didnât want him falling in the muck out hereâ, Sam murmured. Sara was distracted showing them all the colors and picking out one to give to each of her mums.Â
When she was done and Maxine and Paula had matching blue bracelets, the four adults shepherded her to their seats, and the movie began.

((I wanted to write more, but I had to work late these past couple of days. But, hey, I got to run *and* write on Runner 5 day! Happy Runner 5 Day!))
This is it. This is how you go. The chills. The aches. All that's left is a rattling cough, and you're done for.
"All this drama."
You curl in on yourself, further entangeling yourself in the too-thin sheet. The lights are so bright.
"Honestly 5, you've been spending too much time with Sam. The two of you," Maxine trails off and gives an amused shake of her head when your unfurl to frown at her. When she pours a shot off that god-aweful medine, you grimmace and she laughs.
"It's just a cold and, if it's really so bad, you should be happy to take this."
Reluctantly, you take the cup of dark, dubious liquid and give it a scowl for good measure. Then, under her scrutiny, you knock it back.
It's so bitter it sends a shiver down your spine and your lips instinctively pucker.
When you recover, you notice Maxine's pulled out a radio and has begun to crank it.
"As a runner, it feels like a miracle I've managed to keep you still for this long," the radio hisses to life as she begins to tune it, "when I was sick and restless I'd listen to podcasts."
"-dio Abel. If its happening, you'll hear it here," Eugene's voice finally crackeles through as Maxine gets things tuned.
"And this one, per the good doctor's request, is for a certain sick runner. Feel better soon 5."
Maxine fails to suppress a smirk as she turns out the light and a song you didn't know she knew you loved comes on the radio.
"Get some rest, 5," she says.
And she's gone. And maybe things aren't so bad. And maybe, just maybe, you'll get through this after all.

It has been one hell of a day, well, morning really. It started as what was supposed to be a rest day, but quickly devolved into scrambling every available runner to divert a massive pack of Zoms from what was supposed to be a routine supply run. There seemed to be a lot of âsupposedâ things about the day that were laid to rest by the zombie apocalypse. For example, it was supposed to be a sunny, beautiful day as well.
So, like all available runners, you- on your rest day- laced up and ventured into the frigid rain to be good-ole zombie bait. Hours later youâre soaked, freezing, and hangry, but, hey, at least everyone is safe and Abel has a fresh stock of medicine and magazines.
Plus, a tough morning makes this moment so much sweeter.
A smile spreads across your face as you take a cup of something warm, and fragrant and a plate of something hearty and satisfying. As you sit, you and the other runners are given blankets warmed by the generator. Together, you huddle in a quiet, content, corner of the mess hall. Rain patters against the patched roof and you think you hear the sound of distant thunder.
You soak in the feeling of warmth, scent of fresh-baked bread, and comforting chatter of fellow Abel residents around you. Abel residents who came together and rallied to help someone in need, who cook, eat, laugh, cry, mourn, and rejoice together. Abel residents who remind each other what it means to be human.
This is the beauty of Abel.
Runner 5, you are my favorite character. You with all of your versions and possibilities. You and the people youâve helped, the stories youâve shared, and the community you built.
Runner 5, thank you for everything!
((Happy Day 1 of Month of Five! For those of you who donât know it, I highly recommend checking out Zombies Run! Itâs an immersive audio drama/running app that has held me at gunpoint and told me Iâm saving the world since⌠like 2018 I think? Anyway itâs tons of fun and I adore it, so please support them and the artists that make it happen!))
Merry Christmas @five-on-a-bike !! Iâm your Secret Santa and I wrote you this fic, hope you like it!
Collected A Christmas Gift
Janine and Sam send you, Five, on an extra special mission. Donât forget your backpack and your bike!
Pairing: Sam/Five
Takes place around season 1-ish
CW zombies, swearing, usual Runner Five shenanigansâŚ
âFive! Weâve got a mission for you. Itâs in the nearby town so take the bike, youâll be quicker that way,â Janine calls to you. âSam will give you the brief as soon as youâre on your way. Take the backpack.â
You shake your head at herâyouâre never without the backpack, especially when you might get the chance to have a scavenge through the store full of sports bras on the old high streetâbut grab the pack and jump on your bike anyway.
Sam crackles in over your radio. âItâs a fun one, youâll love this right. Moraleâs been down because of Christmas being around the corner. Our first Christmas after Z-Day and all. Anyway, theyâve approved getting some Christmas gifts and food, if you can find any. Iâve got a big old list right here. Janine, why are tinned Brussels sprouts on here? Those are disgusting! Are you telling me youâre making Five risk her life for a horrible vegetable nobody likes?â
âTheyâre not horrible. Some people like them,â Janine argues.
âOf course youâre the kind of person that would like brussels sprouts,â Sam retorts.
âWhatâs that supposed to mean? You know Iâm thinking of putting you on Christmas dinner washing up duties,â she warns.
âNothing, nothing! I only meant that youâve got more⌠sophisticated tastes than the rest of us. Which is to be applauded! Five, watch out, zombies heading your way out of the alley just ahead. Oh youâre well outpacing them, good girl. Respectfully. So much respect going round. For everyone. R-E-S-P-E-C-TâŚâ
âWhy donât you tell Runner Five which way sheâs going today?â Janine interrupts.
âOh, right! Yes. Mission. Five, youâre headed to the old Costco. Itâs a bit out of town so I donât think itâs been fully looted out yet, or so the reports say. Mountains of supplies still there. Get what you can as always, but today Christmas food and fun stuff is top of the list. Toys for the kids, books, games, things like that.â
âMorale is just as important for survival as food and shelter,â Janine cuts in. âWell, nearly. Once you have the basics.â
Privately you agree with her. No one is going to make it through the winter with their sanity intact at Abel without a bit of fun and games.
âIâm going to switch you over to Radio Abel, as long as youâre not sick of the five Christmas songs theyâve got on repeat this week.â
You huff a laugh. Jack and Eugene have only been able to find a couple of Christmas song files and theyâve been inflicting them non-stop on all their listeners, but this is a special Christmas mission and the music will hopefully get you into the spirit.
You might even find some new CDs for them. The thought spurs you onwards.
âNot too many zoms about today,â Sam chimes back in after a while. âThe ice is hopefully freezing up all those cold dead limbs. Lends a new meaning to âcold as the graveâ doesnât it?â
You roll your eyes. The nonsensical joke was barely funny the first ten times he said it this week, after the cold snap started and everyone had to start breaking ice from the top of the water butts in the morning. But Samâs just talking to keep you company: these long missions alone deep in zombie territory can get to you, after a while. âI remember going home for Christmas⌠all the questions about how I was doing at uni, what my future plans were, all that. Funny. I used to dread them. I guess in the end it didnât matter though did it? But Mum would always make up my room, and thereâd always be a new pair of pyjamas and a box of gingerbread for me, that was her tradition. Zoms heading towards you from the east. Your left.â
Eventually you arrive at the old Costco, with only a couple of minor detours to dodge zombies. Itâs once youâre there that you hit the snag: the huge building is crawling with zoms, staying inside to keep warm. And there are no cameras in there for Sam to watch your back.
You are not to be deterred however. Itâs up to you to save Christmas for Abel Township, after all. You hide the bike outside, plot a route through the store, and run as quietly as you can for the food section, ignoring Sam in your ear having a minor panic attack because itâs âtoo dangerousâ.
The store is pretty empty, but⌠there. The back isles are almost untouched. Flour, herbs, spices, jars of pickles and tins of fruit, and hidden under some knocked over shelves, a precious box of chocolates.
You have to kneel and half crawl under the tipped shelving to retrieve it and shove it inside your pack, and when you finally pop up, you find yourself nose to nose with a hoard of zombies.
With a horrible wet roar, they lunge for you. You scramble backwards to your feet, shoulder your now laden pack, take out your bat and start swinging.
The zombies donât have the intelligence to back off. Theyâre not scared, even as you smash them down one by one. They just smell the warm red blood pumping through your veins. Youâre making short work of them as they come at you, months of hard training kicking in, but the commotion is drawing more and more zombies into the fray and youâre slowly being backed against a stack of shelving. Thereâs no way out now, and hundreds of zombies surround you.
You wrench a couple of boxes off the shelf behind youâtoasters (shame, itâs been such a long time since youâve had a proper slice of toast and marmite)âand lob them at the nearest zoms. They stumble back, buying you precious seconds to turn and climb your way up the shelves out of reach.
Thereâs a roar from the zombies below as they see their dinner wriggling away up and along the isle. You breathe, pushing away the panic, trying to formulate a plan. Thereâs a sea of zombies below, and this shelving unit doesnât extend very far. And to make things worse, the zombies, with quite surprising initiative, have started throwing themselves against the shelves, making them sway almost to tipping point. You hang on for all youâre worthâbut youâre officially fucked.
A loud whistle pierces the air. The zombies turn as one towards the sound.
âHey! You! Wet disgusting motherfuckers!â Jodie yells from the entrance of the store. The shelf stops swaying. You quiet the relief that washes over you, waiting to see if they take the bait.
They do. With a gurgling howl, they start shambling towards Jodie.
âOh shit! That worked!â she cries in excitement. Then, significantly less excited, âOh shit, that worked...â She takes off, leading the hoard on a dance through the store.
You slither down the shelves. Jodie deserves the biggest Christmas present ever.
And speaking of presents, right in front of your eyes, thereâs a perfect present for Sam. You grab it and stuff it in your pack, and then take off, using the time Jodieâs brought you to see what else you can find.
You can hardly close your pack when, minutes later, you skid around a corner and almost bump into Jodie, whoâs being closely followed by a zombie with a Costco name tag declaring him to be Nathan and that heâs âhappy to helpâ.
âThis charming guy wonât leave me alone,â she pants. âRun!â
You both make it out of the store with a sizeable lead, and hide quietly behind an outbuilding. A few zombies shamble out after you, but after looking around confusedly, they retreat back into the building. Maybe they really donât like the cold.
âI was on a mission fixing up some of the cameras nearby and Sam told me you could probably use some backup,â Jodie explains as you divide up the goodies you retrieved to her mostly empty backpack for easier transport back to Abel. You hug her in thanks, and both of you start for home.
Sam, Janine and your other friends are at the gates to meet you. As per protocol, you hand over the contents of your pack to her to divvy out to the kitchen and the people who need them most. Thereâs a general cheer as she pulls out a board game and the enormous box of chocolates.
You keep one thing back though, under your coat. Runnerâs privilege.
Later, on Christmas Eve, you push open the door of Samâs shack. There arenât any runners out today, but you know heâd be in there anyway, obsessively checking the cameras and updating the maps like always. The radio is on, softly playing the same Christmas music from Jack and Eugene next door.
You touch Sam on the shoulder, rubbing your thumb over his beloved orange hoodie. He looks up with the grin he keeps just for you. âHey Five.â
You place your gift on his desk in front of him. You havenât had the luxury of gift wrapping it, and he laughs with delight as he grabs it and holds it up.
Itâs the ugliest pair of pyjamas either of you have ever seen. Theyâre a putrid shade of brown with a gigantic gingerbread man design on them.
âI love them,â he says honestly. He stands up and pulls you into a long hug, and kisses the top of your head.
A Michael Buble song, Itâs beginning to look a lot like Christmas, starts playing softly on the radio.
Sam pulls back. âThis is a new one! Donât tell me you managed to get Jack and Eugene a new working CD of Christmas songs.â
Your answering grin tells him everything he needs to know.
âYou have single handedly saved Christmas and everyoneâs sanity, Five. Youâre a real hero, you know that?â

btw just an observation but I know many people who are categorically horrible at social interaction but everybody likes them anyway. A guy at my old job who talked like he was on radio and absolutely never shut up. Itâs fine to be weird, even relative strangers will like you anyway
