i wish issues with daily hygiene due to mental illness were talked about more. i feel like itβs the elephant in the room when it comes to symptoms of debilitating disorders.
so iβm proud of everyone who brushed their teeth, washed their face, showered, and/or put on fresh underwear today. and itβs ok if you havenβt done all or any of those (i know iβve only done the first two); iβm still so proud of you for managing and surviving another day. keep going youβre doin good.

Me: *gives snail cucumber slice* π: munch munch Me: *literally sobbing* you ask for so little but you deserve so much
My husbandβs job primarily employs adult men but there is one (1) teenage girl and my husband said originally he worried she might be a bit of an outcast but instead every man on the crew was like βhuh guess I am a dad/older brother now.β
She was in a car crash on the way to work one morning and called my husband to let him know sheβd be late and he was like wtf guess Iβm gonna be late too because Iβm coming to pick you up and then he told his team and they were like I think you mean WE are coming.
Imagine you are a teenage girl probably rushing to get to work and you crash your probably new car and feel absolutely miserable and now youβll be late to work but then suddenly in the distance a car full of all the adult men you work with just pulls up and is likeΒ βwe came all the way here to pick you upβ the mental image right now is fr.
Apparently she tried to call her dad but it was 3am and he was obviously sleeping so she called my husband and he not only came to find her but fished her glasses out of the hood of the car (sheβd dropped them while looking inside), drove her to the hospital, and told her to take the day off. She insisted on coming back to work so he used his lunch break to watch TV with her to make sure she didnβt doze off (concussion risk).
Youβve heard of the Mom friend but my husband is very much the Dad friend. He said when he answered the phone she said βhey please donβt be madβ and heβs never felt such powerful Fatherhood energy in his life.
Girl: *calls for aid*
Every single dad packed into the car:
This is possibly my favorite response to this post
This girls father: Thanks for helping my daughter out guys
Your husband and all his coworkers:
Everytime i see this post i cant help but reblog
This is what boys will be boys should mean
Yo you are absolutely right
How to write better descriptions
1. Avoid weak words
Compare these:
He ate the sandwich
She walked towards the lake.
to these:Β
He devoured the sandwichΒ
She strolled towards the lake.Β
Which sentences tells you more? The latter ones. Why? Because devoured and strolled are stronger words than ate and walked. Theyβre more specific, so they give you more information. To get across the same information with ate and walked, youβd have to add more words: βshe walked slowly,βΒ βhe ate quickly.β
Obviously this isnβt saying you can only ever use strong wordsβthat would likely quickly devolve into purple proseβbut If your descriptions only ever include general terms: βit smelled goodβΒ βhe walked over to greet herβ etc. youβre making it harder for your reader to get an accurate picture of whatever is happening in your scene.Β
So how do you spot a weak word? The biggest problem with (and easiest way to spot)Β aΒ weak word is that it needs support from other words to really get its meaning across. If you find yourself adding adverbs and adjectives to a term, question whether or not thereβs a more concise way to get your point across instead.Β
2. Be Specific Where Details Are Important
This isnβt to say you should describe everything in every scene in perfect detail, but being specific matters.Β
Which is more engaging?Β
He devoured the sandwichΒ
The book smelled magical.
or
He devoured the sandwich, stopping only to lick up the melted cheese that seeped through his fingers and ran down his palm.Β
The book smelled like a sunlit afternoon.Β
Again, the latter ones. They take you into the scene. They evoke the senses. Itβs the difference between telling and showing. Devoured is a strong verb, but it doesnβt give us a clear image of what is happening. Showing the character licking away the cheese gives the reader a sense of the desperation and hunger of the action. Evoking a sunlit afternoon is evoking your readerβs memories of their own sunny afternoons. These examples areΒ statements with evidence. They provide details.Β
You want to invite your reader into the scene, not give them a summary of the events.
Additionally, specifics make the world feel real. They convince readers that the world actually exists. They keep the story in your readersβ minds once theyβve finished reading.Β
This being said, donβt pull a GRRM and describe every meal your characters eat. Some things just arenβtΒ thatΒ important. There are MANYΒ occasions whenΒ itβs okay to tell instead of show.Β
3. Remember the point of view.
Who is giving the description?Β
If youβre writing in 1st person or 3rd person limited, remember how your character feels about what youβre describing. If youβre describing a strawberry field, a person who was raised on a strawberry farm is going to see it differently than someone who is deathly allergic to strawberries, who is going to see it differently from a Beatles fanatic.Β
Maybe the Beatles fanaticΒ is deathly allergic to strawberries and this field brings up a whole bucketful of conflicting emotions.
Which is all to say:Β
Good descriptions reveal character as well as scene.Β
If this description is coming from a characterβs point of view: what is that point of view? What is this scene making your character feel? Donβt let your narrator slip away from the page.Β
This connects to my last point.Β
4. Remember why youβre including it.Β
Novel writing is persuasive writing. Itβs an exercise in persuading your reader that your story is true, that your characters are real people. Itβs an exercise in persuading your readers to feel what you want them to feel.Β
(Thereβs a well-known quote about this somewhere, but I canβt remember it exactly.)
Every description must add to the story.Β It should be doing something: working for some larger goal, advancing the plot, revealing character.Β
Maybe youβre describing a house because you want your reader to see why your character doesnβt want to move. Β
Maybe youβre describing this lovely-smelling book because you want the reader to know that itβs important to the character. That her favorite memories are of reading it in the attic of her grandmotherβs house.Β
When youβre writing out a description, identify its purpose and make sure it fulfils it.Β
Itβs okay if at first you donβt know how the house makes the character feel, or if sheβs running or strolling towards the lake, or why the book is so important. Sometimes you just know itβs there. That something happened. Usually things become clearer as you write further and get to know the story and characters yourself.Β
Once you do know what youβre trying to say with your story, make sure you say it with every chapter, every description, and every word.Β
Teschers who say "only 60% of this class is going to pass" ok? I guess you're very bad at your job then? Imagine a baker would say "only 60% of my bread can be eaten" or a carpenter says "60% of my furniture can be used" well? Your job is to TEACH, your job is to give the knowledge you have to other people. Yes, some people might not pass but you should try to teach it to them in the best way possible. Your goal should be to get the people through the class, to encourage them, not to give them anxiety and fear about you, your class and your exams.
