Imagine: A young Black woman singing on the airwaves. An up-tempo, bass heavy beat. A celebration of life, Eastern philosophy, and the practice of self-care pumping through the lyrics. 

This musical vision is Janelle Monáe’s latest track, “Yoga,” which has been heating up for a few weeks, preparing listeners for The Eephus, a compilation album slated for release in June. 

Many have criticized Monáe’s “party & ponder” song as too mainstream, or too hyper-sexualized, labeling her as a sell-out, rather than embracing her evolution as an artist. “Yoga” is pop-culture and radio-friendly, no doubt, but what is more appealing about the song is the clever commentary about how commonplace the phrase “yoga" is in our Western culture today. More traditional yogi’s may be baffled at the notion of aligning yoga with popular culture, but a good thing can’t remain a secret forever.
