“Valse Frénétique”
Tick, tick, tick, tick...
“Eighty eight beats per minute, Vivace.”
The whumper said sternly, placing the metronome on the wooden surface, setting the tempo as they sat beside the piano, eyes strict on the person by the instrument.
Whumpee gulped, taking a deep breath and positioning their fingers on the keys.
Tick, tick, tick...
The metronome clicked from side to side as Whumper closed their eyes, anticipating, waiting.
C’mon, this is easy, just concentrate.
They thought to themselves, weeks of training crossing their mind at that last instant. They pressed the first key. There was no turning back now.
Whumpee moved their fingers rapidly, alternating chords to the tricky melody, playing the mismatched notes that created such harmonious sounds, which were so characteristic of Chopin. The whumper followed each and every movement of whumpee’s hands, listening carefully to any mistakes they might make.
Whumpee sat on the edge of the bench, moving their whole body to the quick waltz, fingers dancing on the keys. Not too slow, but also not overwhelmingly fast, just as it should be.
This is easy right?
They’ve done this a million times. The progression of the bass started getting harder as the melody got faster.
Whumpee started tensing up, and the whumper didn’t even need to open their eyes to notice that. They just knew it.
You can do this, you can do this-
Whumpee’s hands flew across the piano while trying to keep up with the long, spread arpeggios that sustained the piece. Their notes started feeling stuck, despite the smooth flow of their fingers on the instrument. They could feel their legs shaking beneath the keyboard while trying to keep calm. Their mind demanded focus, but their fingers did not follow. The piece was almost over, and they were losing control.
No, no, no, not now-
A wrong note.
The single odd sound filled the room, followed by the uneasy ticking of the metronome.
Whumper stood up, their eyes flicking open promptly, followed by a quick, deadly stare to the whumpee.
They were fighting to hold back their tears, hands shaking on their lap.
Tick, tick, tick, tic-
The whumper placed a hand over the metronome, stopping it. Whumpee had messed up.
They knew what happened when they messed up- and it was never pretty.

“The Whole Ocean in Her Eyes”
There was a summer when I could see the whole ocean in her eyes. The screeching of seagulls creating a sweet melody along the rhythmic breaking of waves, dunes hiding footsteps in the sand as they move slightly to the command of the wind. Such peace emanated from her gaze no one could ever dare to suppress it. The seasons passed, it was summer again, and so she let me dive in her eyes.
I dug my feet in the silky sand, walking slowly towards the sea as the gentle breeze brushed trough my hair. Soon the salty water was hugging my ankles. A bit further, and I could immerse myself completely, thus I soaked myself in the teal-colored dream I’d never want to wake up from.
A long time passed since then. People came and went from my life but there wasn’t one day that passed without me thinking of her return. When she came back to me, however, her look was different.
The sunny days at the beach had long been gone, and everything there was to be seen were the violent crashing of waves during the storm that was set in her heart. The lingering turbulence unvoiced the gulls and blinded the sun, turning the once restful sea into wild, incessant blows of water that permeated one another incessantly.
Yes, there was once a summer I could see the whole ocean in her gaze, but the memories were stolen from me the moment I looked into her pained eyes, the kind of eyes that had joy ripped out of them forever. The sea has dried, the gulls have died, and her soulless eyes will never go back to being the paradise I once bathed in.

Whumpers in suits exude confidence, ease, status, wealth, and power. They look put together, in-control. Attractive, despite their horribly cruel nature.
Consider: the whumper’s disgusted grimace when a speck of the whumpee’s blood gets on their polished dress shoes. The whumpers small curl of a smile when they remove their cufflinks and jab the sharp points into the whumpees skin. The flexing of their arms as they remove their tailored suit jacket and roll up their sleeves. The slow undoing of their tie. The sheen of the luxury fabric as they pull it taut. The choked sounds they wring out of the whumpee as they tighten the tie around their neck.
It does seem to be a trend, huh
