Die interview on Niconama (2026/04/24)
Die says this album feels a lot different from Phalaris because Phalaris was made during the Covid years, and the band didn't even know if they would ever be able to play it live while they were making it. So for that reason, Mortal Downer feels different.
He says the title Mortal Downer was flitting about even soon after the band started making the album, but Joe is confused about the Downer part. Surely, since the release of Phalaris Covid is over, so its a more positive world now? Die replies that the state of the world now is irrelevant to the band, they are just dark anyway. He had the word Downer in his awareness while writing, but it didn't really influence his songs.
Die says they ended up with over 30 candiate songs for the album, and he even thought making a three-disk-album would be easiler than trying to reduce the songs down to one disk. Deciding which songs to discard, and which to keep was difficult. He thinks all the 30+ songs were good songs.
He wasn't really conscious of anything different about his playing during the recording stage, but he was more focussed on how the overall sound of the songs was before mixing.
A comment is read out saying the album feels unlike any other Dir albums, but what does Die think? Die says it feels like an album they were able to make due to the fact they have continued for 29 years. If they had stopped or had paused throughout the years, he thinks they would not have been able to make this kind of album. When the band first formed, he would never have imagined they would be like this, he didnt even imagine they would still be together 29 years later.
A viewer asks what the most difficult song to make was, and Die says all of them were difficult.
Die says he hasn't actually sat down and listened to the album much since the release, but for now he just needs a breather, and after a while he intends to actually listen to it (when he is not playing it live, obv), and he thinks he might be able to view it differently, or discover more in it.
Another question asks if he avoided drinking alcohol while he was making the album. He answers, no he didn't avoid drinking alcohol, he drank as normal. On the contrary, he would suffer if he didn't. He doesn't drink much at home, but he does when he goes out.
Someone asked him his outfit theme, and he said everyone just wore black.
Does he like motsunabe? Yes he does.

As his final message, he says he hopes everyone will be listening to this album for a long time to come.

They tweet like “meh” to Mortal Downer and say they become weaker and ALWAYSSSS compare to previous album. I mean, if you are real fans just listen their masterpiece right? I know sometime we disappointed, but come on they are not 1 genre band. They are experimental band!
I’m arguing with people who said they never make good song since Arche and mocking TIW and Phalaris then they stop listen to Dir plus underestimated Mortal Downer! The most i hate is they tweet it, reply everyone who talk about Mortal Downer and want to start listen it. It’s like spread the hate you know?
Song in TIW and Phalaris also good. I mentioned that I disappointed to Phalaris but that’s not make me say “they don’t have good song after Arche”. I like 13, Oboro!
They also compare, DSS is last album they can make cool. Like.. the one who deserve comparing Dir is fans who follow them since 1997 right? 🤣 it’s like you are twenties years old but yelling like you know everything about their album. You don’t even buy Dum Spiro Spero that time 🤣 (DSS release in 2011, you are kids that time)
And this is make me think, i want see how much listener of Dir album! I make little research on Youtube Music.
I just want to prove, Dir not losing their shine since Arche (like they say). Every album of course has beautiful song, song that make fans satisfied.
And you know what? The result is not that bad for TIW and Phalaris 🥺 these 2 album still has audience, people still listen to this album which they mock!

This is song that Die talk about ❤️ the guitar make me goosebumps, and the beginning of song is that toshiya bass or what? I really like it. And the end of song make me orgasm
4. Discard
The opening of song really sick! I like toshiya bass here. Shinya drum also really powerful.
5. Kaijin ni Kisu
I just focus to kyo voice, SO SEXYYYYY. Omg imagine kyo call you on the phone and make voice like in this song 🫠

I'm glad because the complexity of the songs is not as bad as they made it sound hah. At least, it seems like the fact that they restrained the number of notes forced them to explore other types of sounds, rather than the guitar keys they’ve been playing for the last few years for example.
There are at least three songs where vocals are completely absent for the first 45 minutes. Enen definitely sounds better in the studio recording, and The Devil In Me also appears to have a better mixing than it did in the single.

I relate so much to Die and Toshiya staying back, simply politely smiling and clapping as other people are warmly welcomed on stage and start mingling, without them. Dir en grey are not a social band, no wonder only Shinya showed up to the big jrock or visual kei artist meetup, out of all of them. It always feels like a charity case when Luna Sea invite them for the big performance at the end of Lunatic Fest.
