There used to be a plotline that goes something like "you're the best gamer in the world, and game was really just a covert training and recruitment tool, so now you're going to use those skills to fight aliens or whatever". It's more or less gone away, one of those speculative fiction tropes that did not stand the test of time.
I think it's a great premise though, and should start being applied to other hobbies.

the fun part is this did actually happen in real life once. during WWII, several british women solved a crossword really well and subsequently discovered they'd been recruited as cryptographers.
In retrospect, it's surprising to me that we didn't see a rebirth of the original arcade/video game version of this trope during the 'virtual world' boom in the early 2000s, following the success of titles like The Matrix and .hack (plus, arguably, the injection of fresh interest the subgenre got from Sword Art Online and imitators, especially once it was adapted to an anime in the 2010s).
I can totally envision "this VRMMORPG exists as a secret testing ground to examine players' brain signals and behavior for latent psychic powers/genuine magical potential/the reflex speeds and multitasking capabilities necessary to fight the extradimensional forces we based the game's enemies on," to the point I'm floored that I can't think of any stories that actually did that.

I blame @kagiura-akira for the ShiraShiro brainworms, because childhood friends to lovers is a classic.
I blame how passionate Niibashi is about Kagiura's relationship, and how vocal he is about making Kagiura not feel ashamed about having feelings for Hirano, for the brainworms that have me laying out the hype as hell crossover of a TashiBashi (what do you mean Tashiro has a canon thing for unconsciously liking pretty boys) or ShiraBashi (opposites attract - sports and arts - anxious/embarrassed and stubborn/aloof - helping others... always the groomsman never the groom).
I blame @miraglory @sunnfish for HanzaShiro. What do you mean they are always chasing each other competitively? Please keep arting all the art.

as for background things, we do have whatever’s up with ichinose & yanagimoto (the dorm manager)! harusono sensei has such a great talent for making characters, so everyone has such interesting connections (akikawa and ugawa, whatever’s up with the hanzawa and ogasawara families, etc.) there’s so many threads to pick up on, and each character has such a good base that you can conceive of different relationships.
where’s the canon thing about tashiro’s preferences?? I can’t remember it at all…
also, on the topic of hanzashiro, I would be remiss not to shoutout @dirtbra1n, who basically started the entire thing off back in 2022 with their river posts!! really recommend it, I know they both pulled me and @sunnnfish into it back then.
Omg, HOW COULD I FORGET ICHINOSE AND THE DORM MANAGER?! We literally just got crumbs for them in chp 36 of HiraKagi! I'm obsessed with their something that hasn't been defined.

- My Tashiro observations -
The most obvious moment of Tashiro being enamored with the feminine, is when he's immediately smitten with crossdressing Kuresawa for the cultural festival. He has no idea who it is. It's such a pure, crush at first sight. We've never seen Tashiro get so overwhelmed with cuteness before!
He's embarrassed beyond belief when this is pointed out!
I think Tashiro is repressed in the traditional. While supportive of Miyano and Sasaki, he doesn't see his own spectrum of attraction and how "girl" is the language society has given him, but doesn't quite fit exactly what he finds appealing. Sex doesn't really have anything to do with it.
Tashiro is always commenting on how cute and girly Miyano looks. Does Tashiro want a girlfriend, or does Tashiro just want someone he sees as cute and soft?
Tashiro enjoys the adorable himself, getting excited at the idea of being called something sweet and feminine, when Kuresawa suggests what his crossdressing name might be.
I think Tashiro likes all the societal expectations that define "girls". He notices them because he admires them. He appreciates them.
Tashiro likes cute.
Tashiro likes pretty.
Could he find all of these soft elements in Shirahama, who has gotten beyond nervous and anxious when given the spotlight, potentially showing a "demure" side that Tashiro might perceive as "girly"?
Or might he be quietly observing the magenta dreamboat in their year, doing double takes at how pretty Niibashi Juuya is?
I love ichiyanagi, I think there's just the opportunity for some really great drama there... I hope sooo much that we can see them in adult au, I think that would be so fun.
but about tashiro! that's an interesting interpretation, linking his interest in more "girly" stuff to an interest in pretty boys. my personal take on all of this has always been more about tashiro's approach to gender and romance itself. I expand on it more in this post, but here's my abridged take on it.
he's expressed confusion on what exactly dating someone means, he's not all that into crush talk in the second years light novel (shirahama cracks a joke about him being into old women which I'm pretty sure is about the bathhouse old ladies), and he seems perfectly willing to crossdress. what strikes me so about kuresawa is that in that moment, he's literally just wearing a wig. it's not as crazy a transformation as when he makes a serious effort the next year around. also, it's pretty implausible that a cute girl would show up in the middle of an all-boys' school. ...and yet! tashiro is immediately curious. I think there's something very fun in that, that the line of what it takes to be a Girl is so artificial and thin. and I think this same kind of attitude bleeds into his lax nature regarding crossdressing and miyano's relationship. he really doesn't seem to perceive sasaki and miyano's relationship as markedly different from what's "normal", and that easygoing nature of his is one of my favorite things about tashiro!

Pre-menstrual depression is always depicted as like "He He! I had a box of icecream bars and cried while watching the Titanic!" But in reality, it's more like, "I'm standing the edge of an abyss. There is nothing good inside of me, I'm filled with rage and desperation."
It's crazy that being told how to deal with that is never a part of anyone's menstrual sex education.
This has already been said in the notes, but if PMS causes extreme depression and even suicidal ideation, that is in fact something that most people do not experience and it can be treated
Like for the majority it really is "oh i'm hungrier and moodier than usual"

I went to my doctor after I was walking to work one morning and saw a bus coming and actually took a step to throw myself in front of it before I pulled myself together. Later that day I started bleeding and was literally like someone flipped a switch and I didn't feel suicidal anymore. Which made me feel like I was loosing my mind because who goes from 'I want to throw myself in front of a bus' to 'I'm perfectly fine' just like that? I did some research, I went to the doctor and described my feelings, he looked me in the eye and gently asked what I thought it was, I said I'd read about PMDD and I thought it might be that, he said 'I think so too' and wrote a prescription.
If, before you get your period, you feel furiously angry, suicidal, irritated by every tiny thing to the point you want to murder someone, stuck in a black hole you'll never escape from. If you are experiencing extreme emotions for what seems like no good reason, especially if you get your period and those extreme emotions just go away. You're probably not just PMSing , you may have PMS's feral big sister PMDD and it's treatable.
Also this is something that can develop as you get older. So if you used to get normal PMS but what I wrote above sounds more like your norm now then don't just write it off as regular PMS.
