BIOGRAPHY.

all triggers listed throughout     /     the hale family :  new york born, business savvy, and filthy, filthy rich. the kind of people who drowned in wealth. while the family remains renowned for their riches and ‘pristine’ reputation, underneath the façade lies desolation and despair, slowly but surely nosediving toward a familial breakdown. despite their affluence, there remained an array of superlatives that the hale name could conjure up. driven, resolute, triumphant, merciless. however, affectionate was never among the list. for as long as levi can recall, his family felt more like business partners than relatives. for generations upon generations, the male segment of the hale family tree had held a strong penchant for power. a mixture of business and politics had always been the common thread tieing them together. possibly the only factor that bonded the family together. if one could even call it that.

    the hale’s were mostly known for holding the roles of lawyers, magistrates, barristers, legislators, the likes. pretty much any position that held power over others  —  that allowed them to feed their hunger for control. in addition, the name was also known through business channels such as their ownership of various establishments across new york, from hotels to casinos to nightclubs. levi’s father ?  a well renowned, big shot lawyer  —  much too powerful for the good of both himself and others. the hale family were the picture-perfect example of inspirational. the poster family for seeming happiness and success. underneath, however, it was an entirely different story. everything was about power and control  —  climbing over others to come out on top. their devotion and contendedness was never anything more than a ruse ;  a faux display to charm the general population. levi’s father and uncle were the prime example of cutthroat men so, naturally, he and his elder brother were brought up to be much the same way. of course, both levi and his brother were expected to follow in their father’s footsteps regardless of their own minds. 

    now, let’s bring it back to levi’s childhood, shall we ?  similar to every child, he started out a blank slate :  a young boy with wide eyes and an insistent hunger to learn. from a budding age, he was taught to be ambitious and ruthless  —  to keep his friends close but his enemies closer. that he should trust absolutely nobody but himself. he’d wander around his lavish family home, abiding by every rule imposed by his father, carrying out any task his mother asked of him. he’d spend hours reading books, learning languages, playing various instruments. anything to please  (  or, rather, impress  )  daddy dearest. yet, he could never quite measure up  —  always falling short despite his tiring efforts to gain his father’s approval.

    though his brother was three years his elder, the two boys were inseparable. of course, grayson was the golden child  —  always winning their father’s affection and respect. meanwhile, levi was neglected and disregarded even though he was the one constantly striving to do his best. his parents, however, were chalk and cheese. his father was a stoic, irate man who craved power and held a prominent role within the business world and within their community. he was the chalk. his mother was the cheese :  a gentle, compassionate woman who adored her sons and remained wholeheartedly devoted to her husband regardless of the trouble he’d always seem to get them involved in.

    (  trigger for implied violence  )  while his mother loved him and his brother, levi and grayson were by no means showered with affection. if they committed even a crime as small as accidentally breaking an expensive vase, they were punished by the hands of their father. their mother, of course, had no say in the matter. due to his upbringing, a fraction of levi’s heart was never as soft as expected from a child. he was neither the chalk nor the cheese. he was simply the by-product of both ends of the spectrum. the older he grew, the tougher his heart became. until he was eventually able to differentiate his head from his heart  —  often siding with his brain over his emotions. though his father assumed that his eldest son would take after him, it was, in fact, levi who quickly adopted his father’s cold and distant nature. ultimately, through no choice of his own but as a reaction to the lack of interest his father paid in him.

    (  triggers for mentions of adultery, divorce and drugs  )  levi was twelve years old when he’d uncovered his fathers infidelity. he’d actually witnessed his father with his secretary outside one of the many hotels the hale family owned. that night, levi had laid in his bed with a whirlwind of thoughts orbiting his brain yet no emotions to match. fast forward a year and on his thirteenth birthday  —  following a blazing row that ruined the party  —  his parents finally filed for divorce. that same year, levi’s mother fell off the wagon, leaving her two sons with their father and new step-mother. with their mother involved in drug use, drunk out of her mind nine times out of ten and their step-mother having given birth to their step-sister daphne, levi and grayson were pushed and pulled through the chaotic mess.

    (  triggers for mentions of illness, cancer and death  )  two years later and their father informed levi and grayson that their mother was ill. seriously ill. by the end of that year, the boys paid their last visit to the cancer ward. levi can still recall how the doctor had sat him down one evening, a solemn expression carved upon his face as he explained that his mother had passed only an hour before his visit. at this time, grayson had left home to go to college, leaving levi alone with their father. eventually, their father’s new wife had left him for a younger man, which was no surprise. thus, in the end, levi remained alone to bear the brunt of his father’s anger. that, and to look after his young step-sister who had been left behind when her mother whisked herself off to live with her new boyfriend.

    by then, levi had become a lonely boy. spending the majority of his time avoiding his father, he practically lived at school or fled to the local library. his close-knit group of friends were always a welcome distraction and people he will always be grateful for. somewhere along the years of life minus his mother, between the years of cruelty hurled at him from his father, the teenager’s heart grew colder. but that was okay because for as long as he’d be around, his father’s anger could never become redirected toward his little sister. by this stage, a switch had flipped somewhere deep inside the far recesses of his mind. becoming an entirely altered version of his former self, he grew colder and more distant than ever  —  keeping everyone at arm’s length bar his sister and his close gang of friends.

    (  triggers for mentions of a car accident, death and a funeral  )  it came as no surprise to levi when he’d heard the news of his father’s fatal car accident. nor did it come as a surprise that he was in no way emotionally affected by this news. sometime between his sixteenth and his seventeenth birthdays, his father had turned to alcohol. then, one night, got behind the wheel of his car and supposedly crashed. however, levi was unsure whether or not it was entirely accidental. and, truth be told, he didn’t care either. he’d attended the funeral out of the sheer fact that not attending his own father’s funeral would raise questions from his extended family. and for the hale’s, image was everything. playing pretend and feigning happiness was like a second nature to levi. 

    for that following year, levi and his sister stayed with grayson and despite his turbulent life, levi managed to excel at school. however, his moral compass was rather questionable. of course, he remained concerned about maintaining his pristine image  (  and his immaculate student record and grades  )  but with his father’s influence still looming over him like a ghost, levi was far from a soft-hearted boy. encouraged by his brother, levi made the decision to attend university  —  to turn a new leaf and start a fresh chapter in his life. having inherited sole custody of their father’s fortune, grayson aided in levi’s admission into nyu where he studied one of his truest passions :  music. 

    now twenty-three, levi is worlds away from the boy that he used to be. he is closed off and secluded. he is mysterious and holds everyone in his life at arm’s length, afraid to let them in. he has always been the perfect balance of confidence and intelligence  —  both debonair and chaotic. displaying only a small element of his persona, he’s mastered the art of concealing fragments of himself that he wishes to keep hidden from others  —  only permitting them to see what he wants them to see and know what he wants them to know. he has always consistently shrouded himself in mystery, drawing a veil over his emotions, cloaking his real feelings because, if there’s one thing that levi despises most the idea of, it is exposing his underlying vulnerabilities as he believes it would then be easy for others to obtain power over him.
