Gruffydd was a narrow gauge engine from the Great Western Railway. His name means prince, which unfortunately went to his smokebox and made him act all high and mighty. He would often derail and take no accountability for his actions and would blame his driver and fireman. But one day, when he was shunting slate cars to the incline, he found that he couldn’t be uncoupled due to his chain getting tangled in the coupling of the slate car in front of him and he was hoisted up to the top of the hill. The manager lost patience and as a punishment, Gruffydd was turned into a generator at the top of the incline, operating the winch for the rest of his life. Some say tangled up couplings can happen by chance, but the workmen at the quarry say it’s the work of Gruffydd, trying to hoist engines up the hill and take their wheels so he can finally be free to roam the rails again.
