Little Games | Brynn & Hunter
It was her fatherâs idea to have a friend over, throwing out Hunterâs name. Brynn was a little less herself these days, and he knew a support would help bring that spark back in her. At Hunterâs name, she willingly agreed to the dinner. She needed him now more than ever, and in spite of everything, she needed to surround herself with people who gave her strength.
With the sound of his arrival, Brynn rushed from her fatherâs office. Her mother and sister were busy with Gloria in the kitchen. Edwin had wanted to see her before tonight, just a fatherâs check that she was alright. Swinging the door open, she offered a half-smile in greeting, but a slight quiver in her lip gave her away. âHi,â she murmured hoarsely. Without prompting, she lunged forward, wrapping her arms around his middle. Taking in the warmth of his comfort, she let a few tears escape. âThank you for comingâŚâ
It came suddenly. The door opened and soon his arms were around her. It was almost instinctively. In that moment, it dawned on him things had gone better than expected. Something happened, between Brynn and her 'sunshine'. A pleasing sensation filled within him, causing a small warm smile to spread across his face. But when he felt the shedding of her tears, his stomach almost twisted. He couldn't afford to feel sympathetic. Not to Brynn, not to anyone.
"Hey--" Blocking out the forming guilt, his eyes found hers as he pulled away from the embrace. "I'm always going to be here." The words seemed foreign, but he played off them well. "Is everything okay?" He knew things were not close to being okay and as happy as that made him, it was displeasing to see Brynn in such a state. If they talked about it sooner than later, he could attempt to get her mind off of the situation at hand. He could even squeeze in some time to consult with Edwin. "Do I need to kick someone's ass?" A small laugh mingled through his playful words as he tried to play off the comforting friend. It was getting harder and harder as small traces of guilt continued to build. He just had to remind himself this was for the best. Not only for him and for the West, but for Brynn.
