I feel like people on tumblr don’t understand what social anxiety and social phobia is.

It’s not just feeling awkward when hanging out with your friends; it’s not having any friends to hang out with. It’s not just spending a friday night in front of the computer instead of partying; it’s having to spend a friday night in front of the computer because you are afraid of people, afraid of socialising with people and because you have no one to talk to.

Everyone feels awkward sometimes. Everyone feels like a second choice sometimes, and everyone feels like other people hate them sometimes. This is NOT social anxiety, this is not even a disorder. That’s normal.

I have been diagnosed with severe social anxiety and I will explain what it feels like: I have no friends at all. Not one. Why? Because I’m afraid to talk to people, I can’t make eye contact, I get panic attacks when people pay me too much attention. A panic attack is not just “feeling a little scared", it’s having difficulty to breathe, having your heart beat faster and not being able to focus on anything else. I actually have to take medication to be able to say “thank you" when the cashier hands me my change.
