things i love about julius caesar that no one asked for
buckle in for a brain dump while rereading my favorite play by willy shakes. i haven't finished the play yet and have to watch at least one or two productions of it for class, so i'll probably be adding more.
not edited even a little bit, just pure brain gunk.
- cassius. cassius cassius caius cassius. what i would give to play cassius. the best manipulator of practically all time, he plants the see in Brutus' mind that Caesar is too prideful to be on the throne. He draws the first connection that Caesar and Brutus are very similar,,, so what made Caesar so great that he gets the throne? [Brutus and Caesar, what should be in that Caesar? Why should that name be sounded more than yours?]
- cassius goes "brutus! brutus! everyone in rome loves you so so much!!!" and then leaves notes saying how great he is at brutus' door/window pretending to be random citizens in rome. that's just so fucking funny to me.
- Brutus absolutely eating everything that Cassius is feeding to him, but ignores him with his points about Marc Antony and that they should kill him as well. Brutus says it himself that Antony wouldn't join a conspiracy started by another man, I don't have the exact quote. Brutus HEAVILY underestimates Antony by thinking that he will be useless and not do anything when they kill Caesar. Dude, you JUST SAID he likes starting large things. You should've known he would've done something. The one damn time you choose not to listen to Cassius and it's now. Really.
- Brutus. Sweetie. After giving Marc Antony, Caesar's right hand man, permission to speak at his funeral in front of an angry mob, why the everloving fuck would you just leave and not supervise his speech. motherfucker just walks away and lets Antony saw whatever he wants. BAD IDEA IDIOT
- Antony's speech. The whole thing. So fucking amazing. I worked a part of it (starting with "Good friends, sweet friends, let me not stir you up to such a sudden flood of mutiny" until the next person's line) in which he's like "i'm not going to incite a mob. i couldn't do that because if i could, why would they ever let me speak. if i were brutus, yeah, i would do that. i would tell and rise and make you all go fucking ballistic." and then everyone does. the entire speech, but this section in particular is just intense linguistic gymnastics that is a harsh clash between the Roman stoicism that all the characters hold (particularly Brutus) and the raw, unhinged grief that Antony feels. The punctuation of the middle section of this part (for I have neither wit nor words, nor worth, action, nor utterance, nor the power of speech, to stir men's blood.) in shakespeare land, think of a comma as a quick breath that hikes up your speech. this isn't even the full sentence, and by the end of this sentence, antony is yelling this to thousands of roman citizens. i can't properly explain the power behind these words.
- one of the guys that stabbed Caesar was named cinna. the crowd was so mad that they killed another guy named cinna (cinna the poet) just because he had the same name. my favorite scene tbh. it's often cut, unfortuntely.
- also would be fun to compare antony and brutus' ways of talking about their closest friend's and lover's respective deaths. Brutus won't even spare a moment's thought to Portia who swallowed hot coals. and yet here's antony. gorgeous.
- LUCIUS. BRUTUS JUST LET THAT BOY GO TO SLEEP. YOU KEEP WAKING HIM UP EVERY TEN DAMN MINUTES JUST TO SAY TWO WORDS TO HIM. JESUS CHRSIT JUST LET THE BOY SLEEP.
- when calpurnia has the dream about caesar dying, and then when caesar goes to explain it to metellus cymber, caesar plays it up like 10x what it acutally was and makes it seem so much worse. that dramatic bitch.
- metellus cymber's ability to take cal's dream and spin it into something that puts caesar in a good light, knowing he'll eat it right up (and he does)
- "But when I tell him he hates flatterers, he says he does, being then the most flattered." snarky bitch lmao i love you.
- The entire tent scene between Brutus and Cassius. They're near screaming at each other about betraying each other while their armies are outside of the damn fucking tent listening to everything. Everyone can totally hear every word that was said. Every word of speaking ill of the dead, of Caesar.
its so unfortunate when different peoples neurodivergent traits clash horribly. like yes i totally understand that the man at the other table cant control his stimming and loud vocal tics and i think he deserves to have a nice day out at a restaraunt without judgement. however if i dont remove myself from the audible vicinity in the next 20 seconds i will explode.

"Alright?" Barty murmured in his ear, sounding concerned, for once.
Regulus nodded. "Fine," he responded gruffly.
He was not fine.
How could he be? When James Potter was busy nearby helping Lily Evans bundle up for their Hogsmeade date.
Of course, Regulus had heard about how Evans had finally said yes. How could he not have? Everyone was talking about it.
But he was not excited. He did not exchange money because of a bet or pass the gossip on. He did not laugh or go on about the news.
When he heard? He walked away. Screamed into his pillow. Threw a book against the wall.
And now, with his luck, he happened to be here. Heading to Hogsmeade at the same time as the happy couple.
But he kept his face schooled into a perfectly bored mask, even as Potter handed Evans his sweater, helping her put it over her head and pull her arms through the holes.
The sweater ignited a memory.
'You look cold, Reg. Need my sweater?' Potter had offered that same sweater to him only that past summer, as they both sat around a fire. It was a friendly gesture, but Regulus's heart had skipped several beats.
For a moment, he had hoped.
And now Evans was wearing it.
It was so stupid, so weak of him to be so upset. The sweater was ridiculous and cheap and probably made of polyester or some other Muggle material.
But Regulus ached as he watched Potter wrap his toned arms around Evans, smiling and pulling her closer.
