Baltimore by Prince

Prince has gone all in on his activism around the Black Lives Matter movement. Over the weekend, he played a concert in Baltimore, what he called a rally for peace. He even requested that people wear gray to the concert “as a symbolic message of our shared humanity and love for one another.” Of course, Gray is also the last name of the man who died while in police custody and whose death became the catalyst for the protests that have rocked Baltimore.
Prince then proceeded to release a song, Baltimore, that explicitly mentions Freddie Gray and Michael Brown, the young Ferguson, Missouri man whose death sparked earlier protests. Even though the song sounds buoyant (often invoking the Prince classic, Raspberry Beret), the lyrics make it clear this is not a celebration. It’s a cry for peace. But that peace is not just the absence of protests and riots. It’s not that simple; it’s a full change in how Black lives matter here in the United States. “Peace is more than the absence of war,” Prince sings admonishing the chorus of critics of the riots and protests.

Prince, who recently penned a tribute song dedicated to the people of Baltimore and played a “Dance Rally 4 Peace” this past Saturday night at Paisley Park, has announced that he’ll play a concert this Sunday with his band 3RDEYEGIRL at Baltimore’s Royal Farms Arena. The event is being advertised as “family friendly,” and a statement hinted that “several industry superstars” are expected to attend.
As at Saturday’s Paisley Park show, attendees of the Baltimore show, “a catalyst for pause and reflection,” are being asked to dress appropriately. “As a symbolic message of our shared humanity and love for one another, attendees are invited to wear something gray in tribute to all those recently lost in the violence.”
Release plans for Prince’s new Baltimore song still haven’t been announced, but a FOX 9 reporter was invited to a rehearsal performance and shared the lyrics. Prince told that reporter he’s talking with Jay-Z about possibly streaming the song via Tidal. At Saturday’s show, Prince played for an hour; in comments at the show, he reportedly alluded to his youth in North Minneapolis and led a chant of “Baltimore, Baltimore, Baltimore, peace forever more.”
Tickets for the show go on sale tonight via LiveNation.com at 5:00 ET/4:00 CT; prices have not yet been announced. A portion of ticket proceeds will be donated to Baltimore-based youth charities.

Throughout the decades, Art-A-Whirl has become the largest open studio tour in the country with more than 500 artists operating in over 20 different mediums. Aside from next weekend’s hundreds of gallery tours and interactive exhibits, local musicians will perform at concert gigs galore—some officially associated with Art-A-Whirl, others simply timed to coincide with it.
