I love Gillian Flynn and her writing but like, I don't think "let women be evil" excuses how she writes about women. Like, LOVE Sharp Objects love Dark Places but its very hard to be like "well its a feminist subversion" when every woman that isn't the protagonist is described as hysterical, superficial, ugly or cruel.

So I wrote this on my phone after reading a brief, concerning passage in Dark Places before work and now that I'm on my break I feel like I can clarify this point a bit better before I'm accused of "not getting it"

Flynn's protagonists are steeped in internalized misogyny, we know it from how they describe their peers, family, friends, strangers, enemies. But not often does the book do any work remotely close to refuting their world view.

In fact, her books have a trouble through-line of fake rape accusations. There's no kind of close examination on these things, only that "girls lie sometimes". Camille in Sharp Objects in particular has a particularly unnerving conversation about the validity of rape accusations when the woman was severely intoxicated. In this situation, her (male) partner in the investigation simply capitulates and no more is said.

Flynn's books are not meant to give fuzzy feelings, but there is darkness here that gets under my skin. There is a sharpness to how she writes women and girls that goes beyond the simple assumption of a protagonist's myopic world view. She can talk all she wants about how she's a feminist but it rings hollow to me when I've read her books.
