Flynn's protagonists are steeped in internalized misogyny, we know it from how they describe their peers, family, friends, strangers, enemies. But not often does the book do any work remotely close to refuting their world view.

In fact, her books have a trouble through-line of fake rape accusations. There's no kind of close examination on these things, only that "girls lie sometimes". Camille in Sharp Objects in particular has a particularly unnerving conversation about the validity of rape accusations when the woman was severely intoxicated. In this situation, her (male) partner in the investigation simply capitulates and no more is said.
