summary: it's 1985, and camp hawkins has just open their doors for the summer. y/n has been a returning camp counselor for the past three years. she's known as the top counselor that all the kids hope for. steve harrington is the new hot camp counselor. there is one major rule you commit to while working at camp hawkins.
no relationships between camp counselors.
A/N: okay so this is a long one lol, but felt like the perfect summer one shot. it is sort of a slow burn & friends? to lovers. i listened to this playlist the entire time while writing this, and it really set the vibes for me. i see steve as 21 and y/n as 20! I also picture the kids to be around the age of 13!! first steve harrington one shot yay!!!!
Ugh. Nooo. I feel like I just closed my eyes.
I roll over towards my nightstand to hit my alarm clock off. The bright red numbers read 5:00AM. In my opinion, way too early for the first day of summer.
But I get up anyway. Although I dread the early wake-up call, I really do love being a camp counselor.
Today will be my first day back since last summer, and it is quite literally my favorite day. It’s the day before all the kids get to camp.
We usually have activities where all the camp counselors can get to know one another, but we don’t need it. Everyone already knows everything about each other. It’s pretty rare for them to bring in a new camp counselor these days.
So we use this day to prepare. But I mainly use it to hang out with my friends before we have to put our main focus on the kids.
I finally get out of bed and put on my jean shorts and Camp Hawkins ringer tee. I head into the bathroom to do my morning routine and get all my toiletries.
My bags and hiking shoes are already packed and ready for me by the front door.
I walk down the stairs, grab my bags, and slip on my shoes.
Last night, my parents and I had our goodbye dinner since they didn’t want to wake up at 5am. I get it, though, I wouldn’t want to wake up early if I didn’t necessarily have to.
I put my bags in my trunk and head to the driver's seat, and that’s when it hits me. I’ll be gone for the next 4 weeks.
I hope this is the best summer yet.
“Y/N! Oh my god! You’re finally here!” Heather screams from across the parking lot as she runs towards me.
Heather is one of the other camp counselors. We’ve been attending Camp Hawkins together since we were eight years old. Once we were old enough to apply to become a camp counselor, we did. Now we’ve been working summers here for the past three years
“Umph,” She slams her body into mine with a hug so hard we almost fall over onto the gravel. “Jesus, Heather. You act like I didn’t see you a couple of days ago.”
Did I mention she also lives down the street from me? And we spend every single living second together?
“Yeah, a couple of days too long! Oh, I’m so glad you’re here. Are you ready for THE BEST SUMMER EVER!” I laugh at her enthusiasm.
God is Heather a fire cracker, but that’s what I love about her.
She starts leading me to our cabin, lucky number seven.
As we walk, she asks me something I never thought she would. "Did you hear there's going to be a new boy counselor this year?" I stop dead in my tracks as she continues to walk. She takes notice that I'm behind her, no longer side by side. She turns around to look at me. "Heard he's hot."
"What? Where'd you hear that from?" A new boy counselor? Here's the problem I have. Change. I hate change. We have a family here among all the camp counselors. We have years of friendships. I like it the way it is. Now we have to invite someone else in? Get to know someone new all over again?
"Y/N, it's going to be fine. We need some change around here! It's starting to get boring." She says. I know she's excited for a boy counselor, because he's fresh meat to her.
"That's my problem. I don't want change. I think Camp Hawkins is perfect the way it is. Especially all the people who work here."
She puts her arm around my shoulder while we continue walking to our cabin. "If it makes you feel better, I honestly don't think we'd be the people he chooses to hang out with. He probably will go with some of the boys.
She's right. Why am I getting worked up over this? Why am I going to let a boy I've never met ruin my summer? Maybe he isn't even all that bad, I'm making him out to be. For all I know, he could be a sweetheart.
"You're right. And to answer your question on whether or not I'm ready to have the BEST SUMMER EVER." I yell just like she did. "FUCK YES I AM!" She giggles at my screaming, and we finally make it to the front steps of our cabin.
Counselor cabins consist of two counselors of the same sex. Girls are not allowed in the boys' cabins, and boys aren't allowed in girls' cabins. Although that is a mandatory rule, it hasn't stopped us before. After working here for a couple of years, you find your way around things.
Heather has already claimed her side with all her belongings, so I take the other half of the room and unpack all my things.
"ALL CAMP COUNSELORS, PLEASE REPORT TO THE QUAD FOR A MANDATORY MEETING," We hear over the intercom. Heather and I look at each other.
"You ready?" She asks me, referring to our new 'friend'.
We gather around the quad in a seated circle. Ross, the head of the camp, and his wife, Margaret, stand in the middle.
"Alrighty, everyone, good to see you all. It's a big day tomorrow, as we all know." He says as he walks around. "Before you guys can have your night of freedom before the kids get here, I want to go over all the camp rules once more."
I look around at all the familiar faces within our circle. People focused on what Ross has to say. That's until I get to a group of boys. Billy, Eddie, and no other than Steve Harrington.
Oh God no. Please do not tell me that Steve Harrington is the new 'hot' counselor.
"Before we get to the rules, you might notice an unfamiliar face in the circle." Unfamiliar face, my ass. Everyone knows who Steve Harrington is. He may not know who you are, but you know who he is. "Steve? Why don't you come up here and introduce yourself?"
I feel Heather elbow me in the arm, and I look over to her. I see her mouth, "I told you he was hot," while moving her eyebrows up and down.
Heather doesn't know who Steve is because her parents sent her to the girls' only school rather than Hawkins High, like most of the counselors here.
So she wouldn't know that he's an egotistical, ignorant 'popular' jock.
Steve walks into the middle, "Uh, Hi, I'm Steve Harrington, excited to be here."
"What made you want to be a counselor this year, Steve?" Margaret asks.
"Well, I'm already babysitting around six kids daily, and I'm not getting paid, so I thought, why not work here and make some money?" Billy and Eddie snicker.
"Alright... thank you, Steve. Okay, back to the rules." Ross begins listing off the rules. My eyes wander back to the three boys, not listening to a single word Ross is saying.
I shake my head. This is ridiculous. It's his first day here, and he's not even paying attention to the rules of the camp.
"And lastly, there will be no relationships between counselors. I don't want to hear any objections. We are here for four weeks; we must keep our main focus on the children, not love triangles or who broke whose heart. Got it?" Ross asks, and everyone murmurs a yes. "Good. You guys are free to go. Lights out at 10 o' 'clock, please. We have an early day tomorrow."
"Oh my god, he's hotter than hot. I can not wait to be stuck here with him for the next four weeks. I hope I get partnered with him tomorrow." Heather fawns over Steve. She reminds me that kids are grouped up with two counselors. One boy and one girl. It's for the kids to be able to have someone to go to at all times as we're out doing activities. I pray to God that I don't get Steve.
We make it back to our cabin and realize that it's only twelve in the afternoon. We both decided that we should take advantage of the lake being empty before the kids come, so we throw on a t-shirt over our bikinis and head out.
As we leave our cabin, I see three people leaving the cabin across from us. It's no other than Steve, Billy, and Eddie. And the cherry on top is that they seemed to have the exact idea we had. Towels hang over their shoulders while they each wear swim trunks and no shirts.
"Why hello there, ladies," Billy calls out to us as they make their way over.
"Hi, Billy," Heather and I both say. I look over at Eddie and then to Steve. We make eye contact, and I feel annoyed just from having his eyes on me.
"You guys heading down to the lake too?" Eddie asks. We answer with nods. "Well cmon we'll walk down with you guys."
We all start to walk down the trail, and Heather is talking to Eddie and Billy up front, while I linger back.
I'm enjoying being alone for a second until I feel a presence next to me. "Hey, I'm Steve. What's your name?"
I roll my eyes, "Really, Steve? You don't remember me?" I look up at him. He's confused, trying to remember where he knows me from. Then it hits him.
"Holy shit, Y/N?" I keep walking. "I didn't even recognize you."
In my sophomore year of high school, I was in an English class where my teacher had assigned my seat right next to Steve. He had to retake the class after failing the year prior, so being sat next to him meant that we had to be partners for the semester. We actually became friends over that school year, and I won't lie that spending that much time working on projects together made me develop a small crush on him. What can I say, he knows how to charm a girl. But that was immediately destroyed when summer came, and he fell off the face of the earth. Not for others, but for me. He told me he would call me over the break and never did. I waited for that damn call, and it never came. That next school year, when he was a senior and I was a junior, it was like I never existed. And I will never forgive him for that.
"Whatever, Steve," I say as I try to walk faster to catch up to Eddie, Billy, and Heather.
"Wait, Y/N. I'm sorry I didn't recognize you. It's just been so long."
"Forget it, Steve," I tell him and walk next to Eddie.
We set up our spots down by the lake, and of course, the boys continue to stay with us. Our towels are all aligned, and lucky me, because Steve Harrington chooses to place his right beside mine. Great.
Not wanting to sit and talk any longer, I take off my t-shirt and walk towards the lake. Everyone else seems to be tanning, but I need some time to think alone.
My feet touch the water, and it's cold, but not too cold where it's uncomfortable. It's the perfect temperature to cool down in.
I don't know why Steve being here bothers me so much. Yes, he never cared to call me, but am I really going to spend my summer having this awkward tension from something that happened four years ago? I look over at them all sitting together and laughing. Steve catches my eye and sends me a small smile.
After thinking a bit longer by myself, I decide that at the bonfire tonight I'll apologize to Steve. He probably doesn't even know why I'm upset, other than him not remembering me.
The things I do to make sure Heather and I have a good summer.
We all stayed down by the lake until sunset. Mainly, Heather, Eddie, and Billy did all the talking while Steve and I remained silent. Like I said, I would talk to him at the bonfire tonight, not at the lake.
Heather and I are sitting in our cabin getting ready on the floor.
"What are you wearing to the bonfire?" She asks me. I look through the clothes I brought and realize I only packed tank tops and shorts. Guess that's what I'm wearing tonight.
"Probably a tank top and shorts." I look over at her to see she's in jeans and throwing on a sweatshirt.
"You're not going to be cold tonight?" She looks at the clothes in my hands. I probably will be, but it's all I have, so I just shrug.
"I'll have the bonfire to keep me warm. Should we head out?"
Heather grabs my hand, and we walk out towards the bonfire. So many people are already out here, so Heather and I get a seat on one of the logs.
It's definitely chilly out here. The bonfire is not radiating off as much heat as I thought since the wind is blowing it in the opposite direction.
"I'll be right back, okay?" Heather whispers to me. I look up to see Billy smiling at her. She gets up and walks towards him, and they wander off to the lake. Well, that's interesting.
I stare at the bright orange flames in front of me. Fuck, it's cold. All of a sudden, I feel warmth next to me, but it's not from the fire.
Well I guess it's now or never.
"Hi," I say while still focusing on the amber flames dancing with each other.
"I just want to say I'm sorry for upsetting you earlier. You've gotta believe me when I say I didn't recognize you at first. It's been so long, Y/N."
"It's fine, Steve, really. I guess it just stung a little. I don't want to make it weird between us. We're here for the next month, so I don't want to hold any grudges." It's silent for a moment, then he hums in agreement.
My body is covered in goosebumps from the cool air blowing. I wrap my arms around myself, rubbing up and down, trying to create friction to warm myself up. Steve takes notice.
The next thing I know, he takes his hoodie off and puts it out in front of me. "Here, wear this." I look up at him hesitantly. "Seriously, Y/N, take it. I don't mind."
"Thanks," I throw the hoodie on, and I'm immediately drowning in his scent. Cedar and vanilla. "You didn't have to."
"Don't want you to freeze or catch a cold on the first night here." He laughs. "So I heard you're quite the big name among these kids?"
I smile, "I've heard that once or twice." The kids love me, what can I say? Margaret called me a couple of days ago to tell me that some parents have started calling to request me as their kids' camp counselor. I really take the time to get to know my kids and make sure they feel heard and seen. Some of these counselors are here for the paycheck, that's why it bothered me so much what Steve said earlier.
"Well, I hope I make a good impression like you did on the kids," Steve says.
"You care what they think of you? I thought you were just here to get paid."
"Just because I'm here to get paid doesn't mean I'm not excited to be around the kids."
"Sorry to put an end to the fun, but we have an early morning tomorrow. It's ten o'clock, lights out!" Ross says with a megaphone.
I stand up to take off Steve's sweatshirt to give it back to him, but I feel a hand on my arm.
"Keep it for the night, you can give it back to me tomorrow."
"Steve, it's fine, it's a short walk to the cabins." I tell him.
"I'm walking away now. You can't give it to me if I'm walking away from you!" He gets to the front door of his cabin and turns around to look at me. "Night, Y/N!" His door shuts.
"Night, Steve," I say under my breath.
I make it back into the cabin, and Heather is nowhere to be seen. I use this as the time to use the bathroom to get ready for bed. I walk out of the bathroom just as Heather is walking in.
We both look at each other with wide eyes.
"Whose sweatshirt is that?
"Is that a hickey on your neck?"
We both ask at the same exact time.
“You explain first, a hickey is something that needs way more explaining than me wearing someone’s sweatshirt.” I tell her.
She sighs as she sits at the end of her bed. “Okay, well, Billy invited me to walk down by the lake with him. Earlier today, we had been sending each other little looks that we found the other attractive, and then one thing led to another. So he took me into the forest, and we made out against a tree. Guess he wanted me to take home a little souvenir.” She giggles as she recalls the events that just happened. “Okay, now you, whose sweatshirt is that?”
“steveharringtons.” I say super fast and under my breath.
“Um, excuse me? Did you just say Steve Harrington’s? As in the hot new counselor?”
“I don’t know about the hot part, but yes, I said, Steve Harrington.”
“Don’t lie and say he’s not hot. Everyone who has eyes can see it.” Oh, I definitely can see it. But I would never admit it. “You guys barely talked down by the lake. How did you end up with his sweatshirt?” She asks suspiciously.
“He noticed I was cold after you left, so he offered me his sweatshirt. Honestly, not a big deal at all.”
I hope she doesn’t ask more questions cause there’s really nothing else to say.
“Okayyy then.” She drops it. “Well I am drained from today. I’m just going to do my night routine and then head to bed.”
She goes into the bathroom for a couple minutes and comes back out to turn off all the lights.
We lie in our beds in silence.
“Night, Heather,” I respond as we both drift into sleep.
It’s 6:00 am when I wake up. I look over at Heather still passed out.
“Heather, get up, the kids will be here soon.” She tosses the duvet over her face.
“5 more minutes please.” She says muffled under the blanket.
“We don’t have time for that, we have to be out there in 15 to find out who we are parented up with.” She shoots out of bed.
“Oh my god, you’re right. I need to get ready. I really hope I get Billy.” I laugh at her.
“Yesterday, you were just saying you hoped to be partnered with Steve. What happened to that?”
“Yeah, well, Steve was like sooo yesterday morning. I want Billy. And besides, I sense something between you two. I wouldn’t do that to my best friend.”
I look over at her with my eyebrows scrunched. “There is nothing between us. There’s not even a ‘you two.’”
“Yeah and pigs can fly. It’s okay that you don’t see it yet, but I know.”
I never told Heather about Steve, my friendship back in high school, and how he never called. I was too embarrassed over the fact that I had truly thought he liked me. Or even saw me as a friend.
“Whatever, Heather, think what you want to think!”
“All camp counselors to the quad immediately! The children are arriving soon!” Ross’s voice comes in over the intercom.
We head outside and are formed into two different groups: boys and girls. Ross calls out the boy's names, and then Margaret calls out the girl who will be partnered with the boy for the rest of camp.
“Eddie!” Ross says in his megaphone.
“and Sarah!” Margaret adds on.
I start to get nervous. Who you get picked to be with is someone you’re going to spend every day with until camp is over.
Out the corner of my eye, Heather has both fingers crossed, whispering to herself, “please pick me, please pick me.”
“and Heather!” I have never seen her run so fast before.
I laugh and shake my head. Billy is in for it.
I notice the group of people waiting is getting smaller and smaller. I’m still waiting for my name to be called and then I hear it.
I look up at him. He has a smirk sitting on his face, waiting to hear which lucky lady will be called.
And I guess I’m that lucky lady. He looks at me as I walk to him.
“Don’t look too excited, Y/N, I might start getting the idea you like me.” He laughs.
We stand there together while they finish up the rest of the names.
“Alright, everyone listen up!, You will be placed with 6 children total: 3 boys, 3 girls. Two cabins have been assigned per group. You will do weekly cabin inspections to ensure all campers are following the rules. Please report to us if anything is off. Now, please take a look at the two cabin numbers you were given and head out to them. The children will meet you there.”
Steve holds our papers with our cabin numbers on them. “So the boys' cabin is number 15, and the girls ' cabin is number 16. Okay, pretty simple to remember since they are next to each other.”
“Perfect. I’ll meet with the girls, you meet with the boys, and we’ll get to know them a bit on our own. Then we will come together to do introductions.” I tell him.
“Wow, you have this all planned out, don’t you?” He looks impressed with me.
“I should probably mention, I’m definitely the bossy type.”
“So you like to be in control?” He smirks at me.
“Oh God, really, Steve? There are going to be kids around. Get your head out of the gutter.” I roll my eyes at him while I bite back my smile.
“You said it, not me.” He puts both his hands up.
I see six kids walking our way. “Meet outside in 30 minutes,” I tell Steve, and move my focus to the kids. “Hi guys! Welcome to Camp Hawkins!”
Thirty minutes later, Steve and I bring the kids together. They seem to be a good group, and get along together quite nicely.
We give them the grand tour of the camp so they know exactly where everything is. They know where our cabins are, and the main office in case of emergencies.
Since it’s the first day, activities are on us, camp counselors.
“Anything in particular you guys would like to do?” I ask all six kids.
A boy named James speaks up. “Can we go down by the lake? It’s hotter than hell out here.”
“Alright, let’s get your bathing suits on and head down!” Steve says.
We make it down to the lake, the kids immediately running into the water while Steve and I set up our area.
I take my shorts and shirt off to reveal my bright red one-piece.
I can feel Steve's eyes on me. "What happened to yesterday's bathing suit?"
Yesterday's bathing suit was my only bikini I brought with me to camp. I never wear it in front of the kids, only when I'm by myself or other camp counselors.
"I only wear my one piece when we are out with the kids. It's more practical and appropriate."
"So what's it gonna take for me to see you back in the bikini?"
My face flushes red, and my stomach swarms with butterflies. This is exactly how I used to feel back in school with him. "You'll have to figure that out on your own," I tell him as I place down the last towel and go to join the kids out in the water.
I look at him still on the shore, he's watching me, but you can see the gears in his head turning to figure out exactly what he has to do to get me to wear my bikini again.
Steve eventually joins us in the water, and we play Marco Polo. Steve is currently Marco, while the kids and I are Polo.
"Polo" We all say in unison.
Steve gets closer and closer to me. "Are you cheating, Steve?"
"Nope, but your talking is making it much easier for me to find you, Y/N! Marco!"
I feel two big hands wrap around my waist. "Got you!" The feeling in my stomach happens again.
"Ugh, Steve, you are way too good at this game," Tracey says. "You've gotten every single one of us."
"What can I say, they don't call me King Steve for nothin." All the kids laugh at him. He still has his hands on my waist, but I swim out of his hold. The loss of his touch feels cold.
"It's almost time for dinner, we should head back to the cabins," I tell all of them." They groan. "Don't forget to rinse off! You don't want to smell like the lake at dinner. Trust me."
The kids run off back to the showers, while Steve and I clean up our area.
"Well, that was fun." He says. "You're pretty bad at being Polo."
"I know you were cheating. Was that your excuse to get your hands on me?”
"Would you be mad at me if I said it was?"
Heat rushes through my entire body. I feel hot and flustered that he just admitted to wanting an excuse to be able to touch me. I can't keep pushing down the feelings I used to have for him. "No. I wouldn't be."
"Good to know."He smirks, "See you at dinner," and starts walking to his cabin.
"Fuck." I whisper to myself.
I rinse off, then get back to the cabin to get ready for dinner. Once again, Heather is nowhere to be seen. I'm starving, so I leave for dinner without her knowing she'll come find me at some point.
I get my food and sit at one of the empty tables.
As I'm eating, a tray gets slammed down next to me. I'm expecting it to be Heather, but I'm face-to-face with Steve Harrington.
"Well, yes, of course, Steve, you can totally sit there! I wasn't saving it for Heather or anything." I say sarcastically.
He laughs at my dramatics when we hear two more trays being slammed down in front of us.
Billy and Heather sit across from us, and boy do they look like a mess.
"What the hell happened to you guys?" I ask them. Their hair is going every which way, Billy's top is unbuttoned way lower than he had it originally, and Heather's lips are swollen and bright red. Oh god.
They giggle when they see I've realized what they've done.
We fall into a comfortable chatter over dinner. Talking about our days and what the kids are like.
"Y/N and I have a good bunch. They're sweet, and you can already see their personalities shining through their shyness." It's cute hearing how Steve talks about the kids.
Once dinner is finished, it's free time until lights out. The four of us head out to the nightly bonfire. It's not long before Heather speaks up.
"Billy and I are going to hang back at the cabin. Maybe don't come back for another 30 minutes to an hour? Okay cool? Love you!" I don't even get to object before they are gone.
"I thought they were strict on the rules of no opposite sex allowed in the cabins," Steve asks.
"They are, but they've gotten lazy over the years. They focus more on the kids rather than us adults."
He hums. "You wanna come over to mine? We could listen to music. I brought my radio and cassette tapes."
I have nothing else to do since my roommate is gone and probably having sex in our room for the next hour, so I accept Steve's offer.
We get into his cabin, still trying to keep an eye out for Ross or Margaret. I sit against Billy's bed on the floor. Steve is sitting against his.
He places the radio between us. "Any suggestions?" he asks, referring to his cassettes.
"Got any Michael Jackson in there?"
"That I do." He looks through his tapes and finds it. He puts it in his radio, and Human Nature starts playing.
"God, I love this song." I close my eyes and move my head to the rhythm. I open my eyes to see Steve already looking at me with a smile on his face.
"Nothing, just looking." He moves to sit shoulder to shoulder with me.
"What have you been up to since high school?" He asks. A tinge of hurt surges through me because he could have known. If he had just called me, we'd still have been friends and know what each other had been doing. I don't call him out on it, though.
"Nothing much, I worked as a server for a bit, but now I'm at a school as a teacher aide. Then I do this during the summers."
"That's nice, seems like you got yourself figured out." he says in return.
"Yeah. How about you?" I ask.
"Well, I worked at an ice cream shop for a bit, then a video store, after that at the local radio station, and now I'm figuring out my next steps."
He thinks about it hard. "Not sure. I know I want a serious job. One that will provide for my future."
"What kind of future?" Knowing Steve, it's probably the best new car on the market that he can show off to his friends. But he says the complete opposite,
"A wife and kids. A family."
Well, I wasn't expecting that. Steve Harrington wants to settle down soon? It's sweet, actually.
Before I can respond, Billy walks through the front door.
"Your cabin is vacant again! Thank you, Y/N. We owe you big time." He says as he walks to the bathroom and shuts the door. I look at Steve with a smile.
"I'll see you tomorrow, Steve. I had fun tonight. I'll check on the kids to make sure lights are out on the way back to mine."
"Me too, and thanks. Night, Y/N."
"I can't do this. Leave me to die!" Paul, one of our campers, says to us.
Today we are hiking, and the kids are not enjoying it. I've heard complaining ever since we left camp. Steve and I look at each other and decide we can take a break for a second.
It's been a couple of days since we were in his cabin alone. We've taken the kids kayaking, played volleyball, and had a water balloon fight. We are getting along quite well. My crush on him has definitely been fueled by the little things he does. For example, before dinner yesterday, he picked me up from my cabin, and we walked to the cafeteria with his arm around my shoulder. My stomach fluttered again at the thought. I need to cut it out, but it's hard to when I have this view right in front of me.
Steve stands on top of a rock looking out into the mountains with no shirt on, sweat dripping down his chest through the hair that's there. All while wearing the shortest shorts known to man. I don't know if it's the sun getting me hot, or him, but it goes straight to my core.
"Steve? Should we just turn around? The kids are over it, and the sun will go down soon. We have to make it back before the movie."
Tonight, the camp is projecting Poltergeist in the quad. The kids have the choice to watch it or not. I, for one, enjoy a good scary movie, but it creeps me out that we will be out in the woods while watching it.
"Okay, fine, but by the end of this summer, we are making it to the top, and I don't want to hear any complaints then." He tells the kids, and they promise him that they will. Sounds good to me if I get to see him in his sexy little shorts again.
We make it back to the camp, and I head to the showers to rinse off. I walk back to the cabin to find Heather getting ready for the movie.
"I am so excited to get an excuse to cuddle up next to Billy. If Ross or Margaret says anything, I'll just tell them I'm deathly afraid of scary movies." She tells me as she swipes mascara over her lashes.
"Hey, I thought we were supposed to sit and watch it together," I say. We always do every year for scary movie night.
"I'm sorry, Y/N. I really like Billy, and I told him I'd sit with him tonight. Join us! Why don't you bring Steve?"
I just sigh and continue to get ready. I throw on a sweatshirt and shorts.
A couple of knocks at the door fill the silence. I go to get up to open it, but Heather beats me.
"Hi, baby," I hear while slipping on my shoes, and the door shuts. I take a deep breath and walk out the front door but slam into a body.
"Jesus, Steve, you scared the shit out of me." I put my hand over my chest.
"We haven't even started the movie yet, and you're already scared?" He laughs.
"Well, maybe don't just stand outside a girl's cabin like a creep." I playfully roll my eyes.
"Hey, nice sweatshirt." I look down and realize I threw the one he gave me that first night here.
"Sorry, I've been meaning to give it back to you." I tell him.
"It's fine, looks better on you anyway." We continue to follow the trail to the quad when I feel a hand around my wrist. "Would you maybe wanna sit with me during the movie?" He asks. I look up into his eyes and see that he's nervous.
I smile. "Yes, of course." He has the biggest smile on his face I've ever seen.
"Good cause I've already set up our spot." He jogs up to it.
He has multiple blankets lying on the ground, pillows from his cabin, and snacks for us.
"This is so sweet, Steve!" I walk over and hug him. We get comfortable while the credits start to roll. We lay side by side, shoulder to shoulder. It's a bit awkward, but neither of us wants to get too close.
It's about halfway through the movie when I jump at one of the scenes. I scoot closer to Steve, and he lets it happen. He smells exactly like his sweatshirt, and I melt into him.
When the movie is over, everyone packs their things and heads back to their cabins. Steve walks me to our front door, but stops me before I go inside.
"I know it's lights out, but I don't want to stop hanging out with you." I blush. This is all I ever wanted from Steve back in high school. "Will you meet me down by the lake in thirty? We can just sit and talk." I nod.
He puts his hands on my lower back and pulls me closer to him. Our faces nearly clashing against one another. He looks down at my lips, and I take that as my green light and close the gap between us.
The kiss starts out soft, but turns messy. His tongue swirls against mine, and his hand goes down to grab my ass. I moan into his mouth. He's the one to pull apart first.
"See you down there in thirty."
I get in the cabin and quickly explain to Heather that I'm going to shower before bed. She gives me a look of 'I know you're up to something' but doesn't pry.
Just for Steve, I put on my bikini that I wore the first day we went down to the lake. I quickly put my clothes back on so Heather doesn't suspect anything. I brush my teeth, put deodorant on, and walk outside. I look everywhere around the camp to make sure no one sees me. All the lights seem to be off; the only thing lighting up the trail is the moon.
The lake is about a ten-minute walk from all the cabins. It's creepy walking out here all alone at night, but no one will suspect we're down here since it's pretty far.
I get closer to the lake and see Steve sitting on a blanket. I jog up and sit beside him.
"Hey," he says and smashes his lips to mine. After getting that first taste earlier, I never want to stop. The kiss gets steamier as he leans forward, causing me to lie on my back so he can hover over me. I let it go on for a couple of minutes before I place a hand on his chest and sit back up.
I stand up, take off my shirt and shorts, and run towards the lake in my bikini.
"Y/N? Are you crazy? It's fucking freezing in there." He calls out to me.
I dive into the water, and it is fucking freezing, but he makes my body so hot that it feels good.
"Steve, come in. It feels amazing."
"I don't know, Y/N. I didn't even bring my trunks."
"Then come in your boxers!" I yell out to him with a laugh. I didn't mean for that to come out dirty.
He laughs, "You want me to what?"
He keeps stalling, and I'm starting to freeze my ass off in here, so I do one thing that I know will get him to come in. I untie my bikini top and throw it towards him. "Steve, get in here now!"
He catches the article of clothing, not realizing what it is. He spreads it out in front of him, and his eyes look like they are going to come out of his head. "Fuck." He immediately strips down to his boxers and runs towards me.
"I knew that would get you in here," I say to him as he scoops me up in his arms, and my legs wrap around him.
He looks down at my breasts. "Fuck you're beautiful," he says as he places small kisses all over them. His tongue licks over one of my nipples, and I moan out. He pulls it in between his lips and begins to suck while his other hand massages my other boob. He groans against my skin.
I reach my hand up into his hair and comb my fingers through. “Shit, Steve, that feels so good.” Suddenly, the water isn’t so cold anymore.
He releases my nipple and maintains eye contact as he starts to kiss up my chest towards my neck. "I'm so hard for you right now." He pulls my body lower on his hips, and our clothed cores meet. It's like electricity shoots through me. I grind a little, so there's some relief between us.
The whimper he makes against my neck is straight sex. Fuck, I need him so bad it's starting to feel uncomfortable. I untangle my legs from being wrapped around him, so we are standing in front of one another. I take my hand and drag it from his chest down to his clothed cock and give it a squeeze. "Shit," he whispers under his breath while looking at my hand.
I lean in to kiss right below his ear. "I want you to take me back to shore," I say, squeezing harder. "And fuck me so hard that I feel it all day tomorrow."
He grabs my hand and pulls me out of the water. He sets me down on the blanket and starts kissing down my body. His mouth hovers over my covered pussy, the heat from his breath making me squirm.
"Untie them," I tell him. He looks down at my bikini bottoms. "With your mouth."
He doesn't say a word but grabs the tie of my bikini bottoms in between his teeth and pulls, leaving one side undone. He repeats on the other. His fingers grab onto the piece of fabric and rip it out from under me.
I sit there with my legs open, my pussy completely on display for him under the moonlight. He takes no time in diving right in like he's been starving for years.
"Fuck Steve!" I scream out. He laps up the wetness he caused from teasing my nipples earlier in the water. He moans against me, vibrations hitting my core, enhancing the pleasure. "Just like that, don't stop."
He focuses his small licks on my clit when I feel him starting to fuck his fingers into me. "Oh, my god," I look at him with watery eyes, eyebrows scrunched, my mouth o shaped. He stares at me while I see him trying to relieve himself by grinding into the ground.
I'm so close when he pulls his fingers out of me and rubs them over my clit, fast. "Be a good girl and come for me right fucking now." The feeling in my lower stomach snaps, and I'm coming all over his fingers. “So good, baby.”
His mouth licks up my come from my pussy before turning me on my stomach. He grabs my hips and pulls them up so my ass is in the air. "I'm gonna fuck you from behind, and you better take it."
"I will, baby, I will." I tell him. He wastes no time in slamming his big cock right into my wet slit.
"Fuck! You’re so big!" I choke out. It stings, but is soon replaced by pleasure once he's thrusting into me and hitting my G-spot. His rough hands pull my hips to meet his thrusts.
"That's my fucking girl. Taking my cock just like that." I feel a sting of pain on my ass when I realize he just spanked me. Wetness rushes through my pussy, "You liked that? You like it when I spank you, baby?" He spanks the other side. "I can feel you squeezing my cock." I can only moan in response.
He moves his fingers to stimulate my clit while he continues to pound into me. "I'm not going to be able to hold it much longer, baby. I want you to come on my cock, then I'm going to pull out." I nod and whine in agreement.
"Steve!" Seconds later, I feel myself coming all over him. He fucks me through my orgasm, and pulls out quickly.
"Fuck, I'm gonna come." I turn over on my back so I'm facing his cock while he towers over me.
"Come on my tits, Steve." His face is scrunched, hand working over time to get himself to his end. I squeeze my boobs together, and next thing you know, warm spurts are covering me while Steve moans out into the night.
Holy fucking shit. It's silent apart from our heavy breathing after what just happened.
I feel Steve grab his t-shirt and wipe his come off my chest. "Are you okay?" He asks out of breath.
"Never been better." I laugh and lean in to kiss him.
We lay tangled against each other with a blanket covering us. It has to be around midnight by now.
Steve breaks the comfortable silence. "Why didn't you answer the phone when I called you that one summer?"
My heart sinks and I break out into full body chills.
“What are you talking about?” I ask while I look into his eyes. They are full of pain.
“That summer, I told you I’d call you but when I did, you never answered. Thought you didn’t want anything to do with me.” He says while keeping his arm around me. I slowly move to sit up out of his hold.
“Steve, that’s bullshit. You never called me. I waited that whole summer for it, and it never came.” I sighed. “Then the next school year came, and you acted like I didn’t exist. I felt so dumb thinking that you actually saw me as a friend or possibly more.” I feel a tear roll down my face as I recall old feelings.
“I called you multiple times, Y/N.” He moves so we’re face-to-face. “I did like you, I still do. I even memorized your number because I didn’t want to forget it if I lost the paper.” He wipes a tear off my face. “I didn’t talk to you that school year because I thought you hated me. I was just trying to give you your space, baby.”
I see in his face that he’s genuine. His eyes are watery from looking at the hurt on my face. He called me? And I didn’t pick up? It just doesn’t make any sense. I had the phone on my nightstand at all times, waiting for his call. I wouldn’t have missed it.
“You really called me? Multiple times?” I sniffle.
“I called twelve times before I gave up. 765-356-8298.”
My jaw drops. No. No no no no.
“Steve.” He sees the change in my tone.
“What? What is it? Is someone coming? Fuck we need to hide.” He starts grabbing our stuff to get up and run.
“Steve!” He stops what he’s doing and notices I’m still sitting on the ground.
“That’s not my number.” He drops everything from his hands. “My number is 765-356-8289. The last two numbers are switched.” I don’t know whether or not to cry or laugh.
“You’ve got to be shitting me.” He looks disappointed in himself. “This whole time I could’ve had you? I wasted so much time because I messed up the last two digits of your cell?” He crouches back down to me and places his hand on my cheek. “Y/N, I’m so sorry. I lost the paper with your phone number on it, so I was going off what I had memorized.” He kisses me. “I never meant to make you feel unwanted. I wanted you so bad that summer. It ruined me when you weren’t picking up the phone.”
I smile up at him. “Steve, it’s not your fault. It was a simple mistake. I’m sorry for ever doubting you.” I place a small, delicate kiss on his lips. “Maybe it was meant to happen? Maybe we were supposed to come to Camp Hawkins and start over.”
He smiles and then crashes his body into me. We make out for a bit longer when he checks his watch to see it’s 1 am. We are in the middle of putting our clothes on when we see a flashlight shine towards the lake.
“Shit, Steve, someone’s coming,” I whisper-shout to him. We gather our things, but not quick enough for Ross, who’s walking right towards us.
“Well, well, well. What do we have here?” He looks between us two. “I can understand Steve sneaking out after lights out, but Y/N? Seriously? You’re our top counselor. What were you thinking?”
“I’m sorry Ro-“ I’m cut off by Steve.
“It’s my fault, sir. I begged her to come out here with me when she didn’t want to in the first place. Don’t get her in any trouble, it’s all on me.” Steve tells Ross.
Ross studies both of us. He lets out an annoyed breath, “You guys do realize you are breaking a major rule here?" We both nod. "I’m going to let this slide one time since I’ve never had any trouble with you, Y/N. This is your warning, don’t let me catch you guys out after ten again. Now get back to your cabins.”
Steve and I waste no time in getting back to our cabins. We run hand in hand, laughing at the fact that we just got caught.
He walks me to the front porch of my cabin, his face serious. I can tell he’s trying to gather his words and thoughts.
“I want you to be mine, Y/N.” He looks deeply into my eyes. “I don’t want to waste any more time without you. I already lost four years of what could’ve been us.” He places a soft kiss on my lips. “Seeing you interact with the kids the way you do gave me glimpses into my future. I want you in my future.” My eyes scan over his face. I take my hand to his cheek and brush over the line that is between his eyebrows.
My heart feels like it’s about to burst. Steve Harrington sees a future with me. He sees me as a wife. He sees kids with me. He sees us having a family.
“I want you in my future too.” I confess with a smile.
Our lips meet once again in a passionate kiss. This wasn’t like the rest of them; this one is filled with confessed feelings and love. He says goodbye and walks towards his cabin.
I get inside and lean against the door, biting back a smile. I cannot believe that just happened.
The next few weeks are full of sneaking around and trying to keep our relationship a secret. We've told no one. We have spots we meet up at, like the lake, deeper into the forest, and out at Steve's car.
Our most recent spot was in the showers, long after lights out.
"Oh, fuck-Steve!" I cry out while he's slamming his cock up into me. He holds me up against the cold tiles of the shower. My thighs squeeze around his hips, while he bites down on one of my pebbled nipples.
"Baby, be quiet, or we'll stop." Steve breathes out against my chest. "And trust me, I don't want to stop fucking you."
I never want this summer to end, but sadly, the last full day is here.
Steve gets the kids and me out of our cabins and on our way to the mountain hike bright and early.
"You guys thought I would forget about this, huh?" He laughs at the kids. They aren't very happy that he's making them do this hike, but they did promise him.
Steve looks so sexy in front of me with the kids. I can't wait to be the mother of his children one day.
We are so close to the top when the kids ask for one last break.
"Please, Steve, let us sit for a sec," Gina begs him.
"Guys, we are seriously only a couple of steps to the top. We can take a long break at the top. Now, let's go!" I giggle at all the kids groaning.
We finally make it to the top and the kids scream in happiness.
I stand at the edge of the cliff to look at the beautiful view. It seems like the forest goes on for miles and miles.
Hands wrap around my waist, and Steve's face nuzzles into my neck.
"Steve, not in front of the kids." I whisper-shout at him.
"You guys don't have to hide in front of us." We turn around towards the kids. "We know you guys like each other, we've just been waiting for you two to realize it," Hellen says. Huh. These kids don't miss a single thing.
"Well, in that case," Steve says and pulls me into a kiss. I hear a mixture of 'ews' and 'aws' from the kids, which makes me laugh into the kiss.
We finally get back to camp after our long hike back down. There was still complaining, but not as bad as on the way up. Steve asked me to meet him in his cabin while everyone was out at the last bonfire, which is why I'm standing on his front porch.
I'm about to knock on the door when it swings open and I'm pulled in.
"Hi, baby." He says between kisses.
He leads me to his bed before putting on a Madonna tape, per my request. Crazy For You starts playing on his radio. I'm lying on my back as he hovers over my body, and our lips meet again. He parts the kiss for a moment.
"This has been the best four weeks of my life, Y/N." He smiles. "It made me realize a lot of things. You don't have to say it back, but the main thing is that it made me realize that I love you."
My eyes water at his confession. "Of course I'm going to say it back, you idiot. I love you too, Steve."
I've been hearing that for the past hour. I decided to tell Heather about Steve and me since we are leaving camp today. We don't have to hide anymore when we go back to Hawkins.
"You didn't want to listen, but I saw right through you two!" I laugh. "See, change can be good Y/N. It's not all bad."
It hits me in this moment that she's right. It got me to exactly where I want to be. And that's with Steve.
