Straight to Hell — ( 1987 )
Joe Strummer in Straight to Hell (1987, dir. Alex Cox)
"I always loved american western, but the spaghetti westerns best of all"
Joe Strummer (The Clash)
Rare photo of Joe inside Fuerte El Condor (interesting because no scenes from Straight To Hell were filmed there) 📽️ 🌵
A cinematic shot of Joe Strummer on the set of Alex Cox's 1987 film 'Straight To Hell' film in Almeria, Spain.
Along with Courtney Love, Sy Richardson and Dick Rude, Joe starred as a hitman in this parody of spaghetti westerns which also featured cameos by Dennis Hopper, Grace Jones, Elvis Costello, Edward Tudor-Pole, Kathy Burke and Jim Jarmusch. The film was a commercial flop and drew mostly negative reviews but it gained a cult film status.

Story of Vanja Bosnić - Modrić by her husband Luka Modrić
“… Vanja grew up in better conditions than I did, but it was not easy for her, especially in an emoional sense. She was born in Varaždin. Her mother, Vesna Juraić, had complications during her pregnancy, so she was hospitalized for three months. Vanja grew up in the town of Kutina, eighty kilometers away from Zagreb, because her father, Milan Bosnić, played basketball and ran a restaurant there. Her mother graduated Economics. She grew up in a good and wealthy family. She told me how often they traveled. She was even in Sarajevo in 1984 at the Winter Olympics. The idyll ended when Vanja was eleven and her parents divorced. Her mother decided to go with her to Zagreb, where her parents lived and had an apartment in Ravnice, where they moved in. They planned to stay there until they had their own corner. For the first six months, Vanja’s mother traveled to Kutina every day because she worked in a local high school, but after six months she found a job in Zagreb and then they decided to rent their own apartment. It was not easy for her, because practically all her salary was spent on bills, but grandfather and grandmother supported them. The weight of the big changes fell on Vanja by surprise, and at first she was still wondering what had happened. When she finally realized that her family would never be together again, she was greatly affected by the absence of her father …” “… at twelve, Vanja had to take on part of her mother’s responsibilities to make her daily life easier. While her friends were having fun and carelessly growing up, she learned to cook, clean the apartment, do the laundry and iron. Vanja was already in high school when her mother got a job at Dinamo which she continued for the next fourteen years. Since everyone in her family was studying, it was obvious that Vanja would also go this way. She decided to study Economics. Everything was going well, when suddenly her mother surprised her with a certain decision - she bought her a smaller apartment two streets from their house and asked her twenty-one-year-old daughter more or less with these words : “Vanja, these are the keys to your apartment, now you have your own four walls. Whatever you need, I’ll be right there. However, I want you to become independent and learn to take care of yourself”. It was a completely new situation for her, but she knew her mother did it for her own good. She had no contact with her father at all, so becoming independent and standing on your own feet seemed right. She looked after herself and studied, and worked for a short time. She was employed temporarily as a replacement at the Mamic agency when one of the permanent employees became pregnant. For two years she worked in administration, dealing with the matters of players under the care of the agency - and this is how we met …” “… her story made me even more convinced that she is a great woman! During the first years of her life she lived like in a fairy tale and after her parents divorced, she had to grow up quickly and take on responsibilities. However, I was touched by her sadness when she told me about her father. When she was thirteen, she ended contact with him because she was painfully convinced that he did not love her - and for the next ten years there was silence between them. Although me and Vanja had different emotional experiences, thanks to long conversations we quickly concluded that we had the same life priorities and the same approach to the family issue …” “ … from the day she met me as a man with nothing but talent, she sacrificed herself entirely to me and our family. This extraordinary woman with extraordinary personality is everything to me. If it hadn’t appeared in my life when I was nineteen, I certainly wouldn’t have been able to achieve what we are so proud of today …”

“I’ve smoked so much pot, I’m surprised I haven’t turned into a bush.” - Joe Strummer
Violence set to happy music will never get old to me. Blood splattering to an 80s pop song is like a sister to me because I'm not allergic to fun.

The Clash at the Jazz Bilzen Festival 1977
In an unusual sight, Joe Strummer used a Gibson SG instead of his signature Tele, the guitar belongs to Brian James of The Damned, who also played that day at the festival
