hi mods! i wanna ask you what you're gonna do about moderating trans week in light of the genderbend / cisswap slideshow greeny made in bad taste. i understand that the apology was made but i don't believe he is fit as a role to host trans week after what happened, especially after many trans folk called them out on it. please understand that this feels hasty and out of line and i truly don't believe he can unlearn his biases through this moderation. thanks.
The mod team (excluding Greeny) has gone over the situation and we have come to the conclusion that Greeny will not be leaving the team on the basis of a few things:
One of our mods witnessed the entire situation (the slideshow, the criticism, the apology). Yes, Greeny's actions caused harm, that is undeniable, and their approach to the situation definitely could have been different. However, we can also say there was no malice in their intent, nor were their thoughts any sort of transphobic sentiment. While it doesn't excuse the hurt they caused, their intent was to share their personal experience as a trans person. Those who have criticised them have pointed out that trans experience is not monolith, which is true, and the same can be said for their experience. The mistake was not in sharing their feelings, but rather their approach to it. Still, their actions hurt people. They have not only apologized, and thoroughly at that, but have taken responsibility for their actions and the hurt they have caused, and have listened to those who have given them criticism. The response to the situation was genuine and continues to be so.
(Note: based on your wording, it seems you believe that Greeny joined the mod team after the slideshow situation, which it false. They were selected before everything took place)
That being said, while our final rules/guidelines are not yet concrete, we have made the decision to welcome genderbend content during our week so long as it is tagged accordingly — this allows those who want to create such content to be able to do so freely, while also allowing those who are not comfortable with it to be able to avoid it. The mods – and we mean the whole mod team – understand that it is another way for trans people to express themselves and their feelings. We want to make this event as inclusive and welcoming as possible. We want to host a positive event and do good. That is our goal. No matter people's individual feelings on genderbend content, we want everyone to feel welcome to create the content that they feel expresses themselves best.
If you have this concern, and not only you, anon, but anyone, we see and hear you. But a mistake made by a mod does not reflect the event, nor their ability to run the event. Greeny themself has said that they are not doing this to feel better about their actions; they simply have the same goal and that is to run a fan event. We feel that despite the mistake, they are still more than capable of moderating this event. After much discussion, the team does not see Greeny leaving as a necessary action to take considering their apology, continuous open-mindedness, learning from those other perspectives, and our welcoming of genderbend content. There is not much more productive action that we see Greeny nor the mod team should take.
Trans people are not a monolith and will all have diverse experiences. We hope to hold an event that allows for and encourages freedom of expression, while also respecting other people's boundaries and understanding that they may be different from your own. All we ask for is mutual understanding between mods and participants – we are giving you ours, and we hope for yours in return.
