Like … you know when people write that sort of thing, they’re usually going “I, an adult, was formerly a teenager, and I remember what this felt like. I remember how confusing and messed up everything felt, so I am drawing on those experiences” and they may very well be going “This was a story *I* needed many years ago, and maybe I would have felt less alone/bad/broken/dirty if I had had it.”

If they’re not ace, they quite probably had crushes on someone and remember what that feels like, too, and may have either dated someone or wanted to date someone. There are also authors - often queer authors - particularly, who didn’t have the same experiences of figuring out crushes/dating/etc, for various reasons. They’re also not bad and dirty for saying “I’d like to write a story where someone - maybe someone like me when I was that age - DOES get that experience”. Which is not to say it’s a self-insert, but people draw on their real life experiences and extrapolate things to write.
