2. The Hermit's Cabin, by Swedish architect group Arvesund, was first shown at the Stockholm Furniture Fair twenty years ago. Ten years ago it was redesigned for a more modern look. At about 8.5 x 10 ft, it's just big enough for one occupant (or two if you're snugglers), but this tiny house can stand up to all seasons. 

3. A cozy little cottage in Port Clyde, on the coast of Maine. On Drift Inn Road, it's only a 5 minute walk from the coast and Marshall Point Lighthouse.

4. A Colorado couple designed and built this tiny house in only 2 months - without any prior construction experience! Both teachers, Jenna and Sean were interested in living smaller, reducing their impact, and keeping their finances flexible, while still being able to travel. They built the house in Colorado with the help of friends, and then drove it all the way to Portland, Oregon, where they finally got to move in. Jenna and Sean's story is just another example of how building a tiny house, though it takes a lot of work, is not as difficult and unattainable as some might think.

5. This little house is a remote mining cabin in central Colorado that sits so nicely on the mountainside. I wonder if anyone still lives there.

6. MoonShadow is another cabin at the Blue Moon Rising neighborhood of eco-retreats. Deep in the woods of Garrett County, Maryland, this little house offers its guests a rustic escape back to simpler times. The bright green antique half-door, the cedar shakes, and the tin roof are reminiscent of a lovely old farmhouse.

7. The small simple Klunken cabin sits up on a hill with a view of Drammen and Lier, Norway and Lake Skapertjern. Truly off the grid, there is no electricity or running water, and it's a 40 minute walk from the nearest parking spot. But there is a hand pump for fresh water, and a woodstove and candles for heat and lighting. It's a great spot to spend some time living the simple life, and do some hiking or skiing.

8. This little DIY cabin only cost $300 to build. Located in Vermont, Derek Diedricksen wanted to demonstrate how simple it can be to build your own tiny house. With free and recycled materials, he was able to build this 8' by 8' with a group of workshop attendees, giving them hands-on experience with tools and design.

9. A very unique cabin, the Funkomatik 513 stands out among the Blue Moon Rising eco-retreats. From the lavender front door and the beautiful white windows to the kitchen shelving and metal roof, this cabin beautifully incorporates reclaimed materials. Just outside the purple door lie trails that wind through the ferns and woods of Garrett County, Maryland.

10. The Riverwood Chalet is one of seven a-frames built along the Middle Fork of the New River in Blowing Rock, NC in the 1970's. These homes were constructed as a vacation rental community, the Roaring River Chalets. In 2011, the houses were renovated and converted to a planned urban development. At just under 700 square feet, this unique a-frame boasts two balconies over the the river, a loft and a stone fireplace.

11. The Springs Retreat is a two-story cabin surrounded by the woods and wildlife of Montour Falls, NY, conveniently located near the Seneca Lake Wine Trail. Sitting on a 12 acre lot, the cabin has a beautiful landscape of shrubs, a garden pond, bird bath, and fountain, all easy to enjoy from the front porch chairs. 

12. This little cottage sits in the cedar grove of Point Roberts, Washington, which is out on the Tsawwassen peninsula. Named the Gingerbread Cottage, the owners rent the quiet little house out to visitors for about $100 a night. The cottage includes a solarium, an upstairs deck, and a gas fireplace. Next door is a 150 acre park with walking trails down to the shore. This seems like the perfect spot for a relaxing weekend away from it all.

13. Another of the Blue Moon Rising retreats, this cabin is called Sugar Magnolia. Built out of pine and cedar, this house was inspired by river life. Just outside the front door are hiking trails through the woods of Garrett County, MD.

14. This 14' x 16' ft tiny house is located up in the Catskills of New York. With such small dimensions, the house is surprisingly spacious, with a loft you can stand up in! The doorway and the extended roof make this little cabin look very much like a barn, especially out in the open hillside.

15. This 144 square foot tiny house, named the Kingfisher, was designed by Matthew Swett and built by Jade Craftsman Builders. The small space still allows for a sleeping loft, a kitchen, a living area and a shower.

16. This beach-side cottage is totally inspired by owls. It's located in Sandhills in the little town of Hightown, UK, just 20 minutes outside of Liverpool. Built from recycled materials, the little house has a live sod roof that fits in perfectly among the sand dunes.
