August couldn't hide the laugh. His smile was bright and warm, crossing his face and making his eyes crinkle at the corners. It only came out around Hannah, luminous and free. Happy. Whole. A strange sensation that August could only hope would be more familiar.

"It wasn't like I planned that!" He replied with a grin. He reached over the table, giving it a squeeze. "But I promise. No zombies, no vampires, no werewolves, no fairies. The only magic is gonna be what you and me have when it's just the two of us, and no one else in the world beyond us."

"Really?" she gasped, feigning shock. Put a hand to her heart and everything. "And all this time I thought you'd set all that up to surprise me. Spice things up a little." Hannah couldn't keep the act up long — she just had to laugh.

That promise of August's felt like a tall order: just the two of them, no supernatural interference otherwise. In Hannah's experience, something always tried to interfere. Not just in their relationship (though, thinking back, they'd even met fighting off darkhounds), but... ever. Things hadn't left her alone since the day her powers had emerged, it felt like.

Still, it was a nice thought. What might it be like to go on a date as a normal couple, and then come back home to the also-normal apartment they shared?

She smiled back at August, squeezed his hand back when he squeezed hers, and—

Centuries was an interesting piece of information to drop: Hannah knew powerful magical practitioners could live a good long while past regular human lifespan, but she figured they'd age at least somewhat. Dorian looked like he was... thirtysomething? Forty, maybe? Centuries, plural, meant two-hundred plus.

But that was something she'd have to circle back around to another time, because the pressing things here were the words "crime scene" and the knife Dorian flashed her. Knife, blood, crime scene — Hannah hadn't lost sight of him for that long, so how the hell much damage could he have done?
