Fall Asleep in Aaron Hotchner’s Office - ASMR

We all know this man has a terrible work-life balance…. so come fall asleep in Hotch’s office as he works late into the rainy night.

Following a long day of work with the BAU, Hotch can't seem to get the case out of his head. The evening quickly slips away as he becomes obsessed with figuring out what he's missed. Too exhausted to stay up, you fall asleep on the couch waiting for him to finish up. Hotch ruthlessly searches through the case files for missing details, writing and typing notes as he makes way too many phone calls, consults with Penelope via video call, and of course, brews a midnight pot of coffee to keep working.

Gideon was just as reachable as Hotch and Spencer knew that, he knew the team was watching and he made a decision on who to leave clues for. And it wasn’t Gideon. It was Hotch.

If Spencer wanted a father figure in that moment, he had one right there. Gideon is explicitly compared to Reid’s father several times throughout the show, its very obvious that he is intentionally portrayed as a father figure to Reid. Gideon even reaches out to Reid while he’s in the cabin, speaking through the monitor to tell Spencer to hold on, that he can’t be broken by tobias. And even knowing that Gideon is out there and listening, Reid leaves the clues for Hotch.

Because as much as Spencer craves a father figure, he also has deep issues trusting a father figure because of his abandonment issues with his real dad. Spencer needs someone reliable, someone he can trust will really hear him, someone who knows him well enough to see the clues. Someone who understands him. And that’s not something he sees in his father.

He chooses Hotch because he knows that Hotch won’t brush off what he’s saying, that he’ll hear the clues for what they are and won’t get caught up in his ego about Reid choosing him to “die.” He chooses Hotch because he knows Hotch will understand.

Reid goes to Gideon when he needs advice he couldn’t ask of his real father. and gideon is good at comforting him, saying the thing he needs to hear to calm him. But he didn’t need to be comforted in that moment, he needed to be known, to be understood.

and just to add to it, even beyond revelations, i think the parallels of their characters don't allow for a father&son dynamic, the way that they allow for something else.

they're both huge nerds (affectionately), they both love literature, they're both dedicated to their jobs in unhealthy ways. they both lost their first loves. both tortured and targeted by unsubs. they debate classic narcissism in their spare time, they have such a keen understanding of each other, of how much the job has taken from them, of the pain they've experienced. they respect each other so so much.

(and not to say that no one else can connect to them in this way, but i just think with aaron and spencer, there's something else to it)

hotchreid works for me because aaron is a symbol of authority, and spencer lives to toe the line. aaron is a quiet and internal man who feels so much and struggles to express it all the way while spencer is a little awkward but he expresses his emotions externally, he's catty and direct when he's upset, he's smiley and goofy when he's happy, he snarks and spits when he's furious. they both love quiet spaces when they're working and when they're at home. they're so good together.
