HEART  LINGERS  in  his  stomach  from  the  initial  sound  of  the  gunshot,  from  turning  the  corner  just  in  time  to  see  antonio  go  down  hard  while  the  suspect  sped  away.  it  turned  out  okay  ;  ruzek  was  down  the  street  to  cut  the  son  of  a  bitch  off,  which  left  jay  to  check  the  fallen  detective.  no  blood.  that  was  the  second  it  felt  like  his  heart  started  beating  again.  no  blood,  the  vest  had  done  its  job  and  caught  the  bullet.  probably  saved  antonio’s  life.

not  the  first  time  he’s  gotten  a  visit  from  the  INTERNAL  AFFAIRS  FAIRIES  ;  it’s  practically  an  intelligence  rite  of  passage  at  this  point.  doesn’t  do  much  to  loosen  the  knots  jay’s  stomach  has  tied  itself  into.  he’s  been  keyed  up  all  day,  and  now  he’s  realizing  he  might  not  have  hidden  it  quite  as  well  as  he’d  hoped.

CHIMNEY  COULD  HAVE  DIED.  HE  COULD  HAVE  DIED  ALL  ALONE  OUT  THERE  ON  THE  PAVEMENT.     &     MADDIE  ?     evan  hates  to  realize  that  she  was  forced  back  into  her  worst  nightmare.  that  she  was  alone  with  him,  again.  evan  has  been  waiting  for  so  many  years  for  maddie  to  truly  realize     &     embrace  that  she  does  not  deserve  the  abuse.     (  no  one  does.  )     that  doug  is  wrong,  not  her.  never  her.     &  now  she  is  at  doug’s  mercy.  again.     &     evan  regrets  that  he  did  not  tell  her  more  often  how  proud  he  is  of  her.  how  strong  she  is.    (  always  has  been,  for  both  of  them  and  their  complicated  parental  home.  )    his  legs  keep  bouncing.  his  eyes  feverish  as  his  gaze  continues  to  dart  between  all  the  people  in  the  hospital  hall,  never  truly  settling  until  two  arms  suddenly  pull  him  into  an  embrace.  the  embrace,  but  more  so  the  accompanied  words,  they  catch  evan  off  guard  in  a  way  that  makes  him  pause  all  his  nervous  quirks.  it’s  okay.  his  breath  hitches.  his  fingers  twitching  in  his  lap  before  he  folds  his  hands  and  leans  into  the  supportive  warmth  at  his  side.  he  never  cared  about  false  facades.  to  hide  his  feelings  like  sadness,  anguish  or  disappointment.     (  he  will  never  understand  why  the  society  puts  so  much  pressure  concerning  masculinity  on  kids,  and  later  on  men.  or  any  expectations  concerning  gender  roles.  one  way  or  the  other.  )     their  companionship,  friendship,  whatever  they  call  it,  has  become  close     &     tactile  enough  for  evan  to  understand  that  jay  is  not  trying  to  make  false  promises.  he  is  not  telling  him  that  maddie  is  going  to  be  okay.  that  they  are  going  to  be  okay.  that  everything  is  going  to  be  okay.     (  it’s  what  they  all  hope  to  be,  but  who  can  truly  make  that  kind  of  promise  ?  )     for  now  ?  it’s  okay  to  feel  overwhelmed.  to  seek  comfort.  to  challenge  morals     &     act  with  rashness  in  an  attempt  to  find  a  lead  on  where  they  can  search  for  maddie.  curling  his  shoulders,  evan  grits  his  teeth  together  because  he  knows,  if  challenged  by  the  detective  who  took  over  the  investigation,  he  might  not  be  able  to  keep  his  thoughts  at  bay.     ❝     we  need  to  find  her.  we  can  not—  she  feared  the  risk  of  staying  in  one  place  for  too  long  and  i  talked  her  into  making  a  new  life  here  and  now  she  is  gone  and  i  failed  her.  she  is  the  only  family  i  have.     ❞

uncertainty  is  a  foul  thing.  times  like  this,  in  the  absence  of  information,  minds  are  always  keen  to  wander  towards  worst  possible  scenarios.  but  worse  than  that  is  the  blame  that  accompanies  those  thoughts.  a  brain  full  of  ❛  should  have  been  there  ❜  and  ❛  should  have  known  better  ❜  is  a  heavy  burden  to  carry.  and,  from  the  looks  of  the  firefighter  when  he  arrives,  it  seems  evan’s  been  carrying  much  of  that  burden  on  his  own.  maybe  that’s  what  drives  him  forward,  what  forces  the  words  from  his  mouth  as  he  holds  tight  to  a  good  man  DROWNING.

a  smile,  colored  by  a  sympathetic  grimace.  yeah,  he’s  sure  the  guy  has  had  worse  ―  haven’t  they  all  ?  ―  but  that  doesn’t  mean  he  hasn’t  been  through  the  ringer  today.  jay  can  tell  that  much  just  from  looking  at  him.  split  lip,  hunched  shoulders,  and  what  looks  like  it’s  on  it’s  way  to  being  one  hell  of  a  shiner  all  paint  a  pretty  miserable  picture.

so,  no.  jay  won’t  press.  won’t  force  him  to  check  in  with  a  paramedic.  won’t  nag  or  pester  him  into  doing  anything  he  doesn’t  want  to  (  because  if  their  roles  were  reversed,  he  can’t  say  he’d  be  any  different  from  roman  right  now  ).

eyes  roll.  THE  DETECTIVE  knows  just  enough  about  nonverbal  communication  to  know  he’s  practically  broadcasting  ❛  annoyed  ❜  on  every  channel,  but  cares  little  enough  about  it  that  he  does  it  anyways.
