Stop Counting Days. Start Counting Reps. đđŞ Weâve all heard it: "It takes 21 days to build a habit." But in the fire service, we don't live by a standard calendar. We live by the call, the shift, and the training ground. As first responders, we know that true skill isn't born on a specific dateâitâs forged through repetition. Whether itâs throwing a ladder, pulling a line, or mastering a new medical protocol, the "rep" is what makes it a reflex. Why should your health and wellness be any different? If you want to build true first responder resilience, you need a playbook that fits our unpredictable lives. Thatâs why I developed the R.E.A.C.H. Approach: đ R - Repetition: Every time you do the work, you rewire your brain. đ E - Engagement: Donât just go through the motions. Be intentional. đ A - Appropriate Challenge: Keep it manageable. Donât climb Everest after a 24-hour shift. đ C - Cue It Up: Attach new habits to things you already do (like the rig check). đ H - Healthy Foundation: Sleep, movement, and real food are your "turnout gear" for life. Stop waiting for a "magic" day on the calendar to change your life. Do the rep today. Then do it again tomorrow. Check out the full breakdown of the R.E.A.C.H. Approach on the blog!
