Until The Very End

Remus: You almost hit someone yesterday.

The tragedy of The Life and Times is that you know.

From page one - hell, when you first search up Marauders or Jily fanfiction, you know what is going to happen.

You know that James and Lily die too young. You know Sirius ends up in Azkaban. You know Peter betrays them. You know that Remus is alone for most of his adult life.

You read it anyway. You might even re-read it because it’s glorious.

And then there is the second tragedy: it isn’t finished. Jules has said that it never will be. And we can sit here moping about how the story isn’t complete, and how much that upsets us, and how much we want to see James and Lily kiss and get together, but in the end, we know, that their story doesn’t finish, it just ends. It doesn’t end happily.

And those final two chapters - with all the deaths of the MFP, it just reminds us of that. there are no happy endings in this story. And honestly, maybe leaving the fic where it did gives it’s own poetic ending - that these guys’ lives never were fulfilled. They never did get the ending they deserved.

And I think part of the reason I dream and dream that one day Jules will update and we’ll see how happy these guys are together, is because in a way I want to cheat what happens to them. I want to forget.

Maybe this is an emotional overreaction to fanfiction or even the original fiction, but I don’t care. I guess it is a hard thing to accept, that not everyone gets happy endings. Not everything is fair.

Me: [dives in the book]

Me: [aggressively tackles Harry]

Me: [grabs him by the collar]

Me: [screams]

“Harry, darling, it’s mum. I just want to say–”

“HARRY JAMES POTTER I AM SO PROUD OF YOU”

“Er, you see, Harry, what your father means is–”

“YOUNGEST SEEKER IN OVER A CENTURY HARRY EVEN I DID NOT ACHIEVE THAT I AM SO HAPPY”

“James, I think he gets the–”

“LILY MY SON IS A QUIDDITCH LEGEND MY SON TOOK AFTER ME”

“Don’t you mean our son, James–”

“HARRY IM COMING TO YOUR FIRST GAME AND IM GETTING YOU A NEW BROOM WHAT KIND DO YOU WANT”

“James, you got him a new one last week–”

“HARRY JAMES POTTER DID I MENTION THAT I AM SO FUCKING PROUD OF YOU”
