"come on, i promise it'll be awesome. even if you don't end up liking the band, the drinks will be flowing and the crowds will be rocking. we're called velvet groove, and we take the stage at eight." zehra was giving her best and most charming smile as they held forward the hand-drawn flyers they'd made to promote their band's upcoming gig. "think you'll be able to make it?"

nick taps his fingers against the table, honestly not too sure what would suit him.Β βmaybe a little rose tattoo, oh, oh, or maybe a stick figure surfing! that would look so bitchinβ. surfing is a truly life changing experience.β he used to surf all the time in california, when he was a kid. maybe he was rambling because heβs slightly nervous or maybe, heβs just into the idea of getting tattoos with a cool older guy. really, the last thing nick needs is another tattoo, especially a face tattoo.
he shook his head slightly, the corners of his lips twitching with a smile.Β βalready got the stickman.β darcy wondered for a moment if it was obviousΒ that heβd gotten a surfing stick figure--well, technically there were two of the stick figures--on his hip when he was a teenager. heβd gotten it with his high school boyfriend, right before everything went to shit and while it was a stupid tattoo, he secretly loved it.Β βyou might be onto something with the rose. maybe i should shave my head and get it on my skull.β heβd seen a man in the army with a tattoo on his skull, so he knew it was possible. but he could only imagine how painful it must have been.Β
Axel leaned forward on the table, chin resting on his hand. He had been planning to work on one of his wooden figures this morning, maybe put on a radio show in the background, but instead it seemed Darcy was in need of his attention. " True, you cant leave. Doesn't mean I can't just get up and go about my day. It is not like you could stop me... " Not that he would ever leave Darcy behind, even in jest. They'd been through too much real shit together to even pretend that.
"and where are you gonna go? out there?" he countered, motioning to the sheet of white snow falling outside their window. "you're just as stuck here, man." despite darcy's incessant whining, there was a reason he and axel worked so well as roommates. they could very easily cohabitate in the same space, without the need to fill the air with conversation and activity. he stuffed a forkful of eggs into his mouth, leaning back in the chair. his eyes kept drifting out the window, a subtle scowl on his face. he didn't like the snow at the best of times, he was from florida.
zaki tried to not let it show how hard of a day he was having but some people just knew how to figure him out even if they thought they hid it well. "the usual and some wine, got it." he grinned and shoved his hands into his pockets. "my break is in like ten minutes but i'm sure they'll let me take it now but -- are you sure? i don't want to bother you."
darcy nodded firmly, giving the younger one a comforting smile. "please, i insist." in truth, darcy himself needed the company as well. his sour, withdrawn demeanor didn't lend it's self well to making friends, and as much as he liked hanging with axel, it kinda sucked that he was darcy's only real friend. he knew zaki was only friendly for the tip, but he was far better conversation than other company he'd paid for in the past.
marnie grinned up at the other, her heart practically racing. it was just so kind of her, and for as scared as she just was, she realized she needn't be. she wasn't expecting all this sweetness to ooze out of her. "oh, wow," she said, her grin plastered on her face, "thank you so much. this is so nice. i don't have any change β" she began to panic, feeling her pockets. "i'm so sorry β"
guin shook her head with a soft smile before glancing over her shoulder. after marking sure no one was looking for her at the stand, she slid onto the bench opposite the girl. "oh no, don't worry about it. it was gonna be thrown out anyway." she explained, stretching her aching legs out in front of her. it had been a long shift and her feet hurt, she was grateful for the short respite. "i'm guin, by the way. short for guinevere."

Cedric's eyes were attuned to the episode of three's company playing behind them when the other told them to hold still. "Sorry, man, I've never seen this episode, I got like totally into it." They said with a smile before looking for at their matching nails. "Oh hell yeah, I dig the color. Great choice for my eyes." They said before holding their hands up to their face and fluttering their eyelashes at Guin.
"adorable, absolutely adorable!" she gushed, screwing the cap back on the bottle tightly. she tucked it into a little wooden box, so old the sides were barely being held together. she set it down next to her before admiring her own nails. hers were far less neat, especially on her left hand, when she'd had to use her non-dominant hand. "i swear this stuff is gone in a week but it's cute while it lasts."
A small smile passed across Axel's lips as he recalled the place his friend was referencing, before fading just as quickly as his mind flicked images of what happened soon afterwards. " Yes. That was a nice place. Beautiful, really. I wish it had better connotations. " War was a nasty business, but the only one he'd known for almost all of his adult life. It gave him a different perspective of almost all things and he was in a way grateful for it, even if it had lead him to be perpetually alone. Though that was by choice. " It's odd, but I think I may like it. The quiet. "
darcy was glad axel was finding peace here, because darcy wasn't good at finding peace without him. whenever things became too much for darcy, axel was there. a calm, steady presence, reminded him that the sky wasn't falling. "of course you would. the average mute mouse makes more noise than you." he was huffing, but there was no annoyance or ill-will behind it. he just liked to complain, it made the world easier to deal with. axel always just listened, usually rolled his eyes a little, but let darcy carry on as he pleased. it was the core of their friendship.
nick smiles from ear to ear at the otherβs response, obviously wanting to hear that.Β βthank you! finally, an adult with common sense!β as if that isnβt bad enough, heβs already considering if the tattoo will be in color or not.Β βit would be better if you get a face tattoo with me. you would look totally hot.β he tells the other, taking a sip from his orange juice. he wasnβt even flirting either, heβs just an honest guy.Β βi can draw it up for you. itβll be the best thing iβve ever drawn.β
he blinked in surprise when the other suggested he get a face tattoo as well, and imagined the heart attack his mother would have had. he swallowed the twang of pain in his chest that told him she wasn't his mother anymore and she'd hated him for far less severe transgressions. "what're you thinking?" it didn't hurt to humor the kid, even though darcy knew he'd never go through with it. he loved the tattoos he had already, but he knew it would be a crime against nature to fuck with his face.
With an imperceptible sigh, Axel rested his paper on the table and looked up at Darcy. " Nope not human at all. I'm one of those aliens from Star Trek. You've caught me out, my covert mission has failed. " Anyone who didn't know him would think from his tone that he was being an ass, but jokes were never easy for him. " Do you not have anything to pass the time ? A new book to read, a scarf to knit, literally anything ? "
darcy spun on him, opening his mouth to counter the other's comment before closing it again. "i always suspected you were vulcan." he sighed, shoving another piece of bacon into his mouth. he piled a few more onto a plate, throwing a scoop of eggs beside them and smothering them with pepper and ketchup. he then opened the door of the fridge, staring into it for a long moment before deciding on a glass of orange juice. he then took his meal to the table, sitting across from his friend. "i have you. i can just sit here and annoy you." his tone was serious, but he was grinning. he pulled up the leg of his pants, loosening the straps and removing his prosthetic. "and now i can't leave."

Heller bent down to let Mizzy sniff his hand, a smile starting on his lips. " I would have had a greater problem if I had found out you'd left this delightful lady in the cold. " He looked back up at the woman, squinting slightly, trying to recall her name. He'd only been in town a month, and at the station just over a fortnight, and was not yet up to speed on who everyone was. Most people knew who he was, apparently an overly posh British man wasn't common in a small Wisconsin area. Still, he didn't want to assume that she too knew who he was, so he stood back up and held out a hand. " Heller Smith, pleased to make your acquaintance, " came an introduction in a smooth English accent.
zehra breathed a small sigh of relief when he seemed to accept the dog. "she normally loves the cold, but i just found out last week that she's very pregnant and i don't want to risk anything happening to her. i couldn't live with mysel--hey!! miz, stop!" she gasped as the dog lept forward and smothered him in kisses. it took a second, but they managed to pull the dog off of him. the brunette let out a shaky, breathless laugh, shaking his hand. "i'm zehra. and this is mizrak. or mizzy, for short. it's nice to meet you." they gave her leash a gentle tug and the pup sat, her tongue wagging happily out the corner of her mouth. "you're new here, right? i've seen you working with some of the equipment in between shows."
Heller was clanking around inside the station, a few of the machines needed some routine maintenance so he'd offered to look them over to avoid the cost of calling an expert out, as he'd gotten rather familiar with the equipment. He was blissfully unaware of how the weather was starting to turn with how absorbed he was in his task.
It'd been quiet for a while when he heard someone calling out. Wondering who it could be he started to make his way towards the entrance. " Hello yourself, " he responded.
zehra jumped at the sound of his voice, expecting her call to be lost in the void. "shit," she mumbled, pressing her finger to her lips at mizzy. she'd get in serious trouble if anyone knew they'd brought their dog to the radio station. as if somehow sensing zee's anxiety, mizrak tensed, her tail beginning to wag slowly. "i...uh...." their mouth flapped open and closed like a fish as she struggled to come up with an excuse. "it's uh...too cold, i couldn't just leave her in the car. we'll only be a moment, i swear." she glanced between the approaching figure and her now-excited puppy. she recognized the man, although couldn't quite remember his name. he hadn't been here long, she knew that.
The blizzard had hit seemingly out of nowhere. There hadn't been much in the paper or on the radio for weather updates until it was upon them. Luckily for Axel, he had been home when it struck. He'd made a nice breakfast while the storm was raging, playing some old tunes on his record player in the corner. Now he was reading while finishing his plate of eggs and bacon. " There is more fixings if you want one, " he said to his roommate as he walked in, without even looking up.
darcy had no idea how axel could be so calm. the weather was too bad to leave and his leg was aching with phantom pains, and all he could do was pace like a caged animal. "how does this not bother you?" he asked, looking out the window for the umpteenth time, as if the snow would magically disappear. he did, however, take axel up on the offer of breakfast. darcy himself was a terrible cook, and if eating out wasn't an option, he'd likely starve. axel had kept him fed and alive a lot longer than darcy could have done for himself. he stuffed a strip of bacon into his mouth, talking through it. "you're not human, man. not even a little. this is like a vacation for you, eh?"
there had been whispers of a storm for days now, but zehra hadn't believed it. every day was gray and gross, today wouldn't be much different. but she was very wrong. it was her day off and she had just pulled into the station's parking lot, mizzy sleeping soundly in the backseat of her car, a chill cutting through the feather down coat and straight to her bones. there was no way she was leaving mizzy in the car, no matter how quick she was planning to be inside the building. "alright, miz, behave. we're just gonna be quick." she spoke to the pup like she was a petulant child, determined for mischief. in reality, mizrak stayed glued to her side as she unlocked the door to the station. there were lights on inside, giving her the hint that she wasn't alone. "hello? anyone in here?" she called out, stopping in her tracks. mizrak stopped with her, her ears twitching as she listened.
hen might actually, genuinely be in trouble. he had thought the walk wasn't worth bringing his car, that it might be nice to get some exercise. he'd made the hike a few times now, but never in the snow like this. it had crept up on him, a few flakes quickly turning into a whiteout. eventually, the snow became too heavy to see through, and he was stuck seeking shelter off the road. the only shape he could see through the snow looked like what could have been a barn, and desperate for a reprieve, he headed towards it. the doors were unlocked, thankfully, and he slipped inside. unsure of what else to do, he just sat himself down on a haybale, already worrying about the kid. he trusted samson, but who knows how long he was going to be stuck in this barn, the wind whistling outside.

( hande erΓ§el, 23, demigirl, she/they)Β ZEHRA KARANΒ has been living in Point Place forΒ TEN YEARS. Their favorite song isΒ FLY BY NIGHT BY RUSH. Theyβre currently up toΒ DJ/HOST AT WFPP RADIO STATION, but theyβd rather beΒ SEEING THE WORLD WITH THE BAND. First impressions usually stick around here, and others describe them asΒ SCATTERBRAINED, FEARLESS, PASSIONATE. Stick around to get to know the real them.
in a lot of ways, her parents sending her to live with her aunt and uncle in america was the worst thing to ever happen to zehra. she was the only child of two very loving parents and dreamed of being a professional painter. she spent nine years enjoying her childhood and studying art to her hearts content, never knowing what was in store for her. they thought they were helping her by sending her to a fancy art camp in ankara, where she would stay with her mother's sister and her husband. and at first, it was great. the art camp was amazing and she'd write home every week. but when it came time for her to board the train home, she never made it. her parents haven't seen her since. to her knowledge, they passed away when she was eleven.
now forced to live a lie, and punished often and severely if she didn't do so believably, zehra struggled to figure herself out. while most kids her age were worrying about puberty and boys and homework, zehra was learning how to lie to the police and paint just like the master painters. anywhere money could be made, her uncle had his fingers in the pie. and while he had no artistic talent of his own, his artist niece was too afraid of him to ever say no. he had them run out of every major city in america, either by the police or the local criminals, eventually settling down in wisconsin, where her uncle began his forgery business. identification cards, documents, and, of course, his niece's fake masterpieces. it was good money and with the efficiency of the postal service, he could do so from their home without really drawing much attention. zehra turned to desperate measures to balance his increasing demands on top of her already struggling grades and pretending to be normal. it started with coffee to keep her awake for hours, until coffee wasn't strong enough. she started experimenting with harder and harder substances, and now she can't stop.
it wasn't all terrible, thankfully, as zehra has made friends in the last ten years since she's been here. she discovered her passion for music, after a couple of friends in high school inspired her to start learning the bass guitar. music was easy. she didn't have to worry about a language barrier when she was strumming. music was real, she didn't have to lie or fake it. her friends were her saving grace. right out of high school, she got a job sorting and filing records at the local radio station. undiagnosed learning disorders and a controlling uncle prevented any chance of a college career, but she was happy. she has worked her way up to co-hosting a show, spending her free time causing trouble with her friends and playing in the band. she still lives with her uncle because she's too scared of what will happen if she tries to leave, but at least she's got mizrak, or mizzy for for short, with whom she is inseparable.
