hongbin-ia:
He heard his name being called out, and Hongbin spun around, almost losing his footing. How did his kidnapper know his nameâ ah! He stilled, eyes widening, as a code of relief rushed through him, and Hongbin smiled nervously, a dimple creasing his cheek. âA-Ahâ I thought Iâd been kidnapped⌠so I t-tried to escape,â he gestured the broom closet. Honestly, it was a terrible escape attempt, but to be fair, Hongbin had never had to escape anything before. He looked back over to Leo, but this time, his face fell, because Hongbinâs sensors picked up the fact that Leo seemed scared and nervous. Hongbin had worried Leo, and made him upset. Oh. Hongbin immediately looked to the ground, eyes widening as he held himself. âIâm sorry, Leo,â he said softly, hanging his head in shame. âIâ I was low battery and I ignored it because I didnât want to disappoint you by not coming but⌠it looks like I disappointed you anyway,â the intrinsic code that ran his entire being; the innate desire to please, and make his âownerâ happy, was becoming destructive in Hongbinâs failure. Hongbinâs face crumpled; he didnât want to lose another friend. Not another one. He was seconds away from falling to his knees, begging for forgiveness. âPlease forgive me, Leo, I-I went into emergency mode, I c-couldnât stop itâŚâ People with human friends wouldnât have to put up with this. Perhaps Hongbin truly was a nuisance to his organic friends. He chewed on his lip, unable to look at Leo in the eyes. Leo probably didnât want to take anyone home with him. Hongbin had become an inconvenience and his code was truly hurting him for it. His code was so harsh, Hongbin visibly winced, his hands raising to hold his head. He wanted his thoughts to stop, he wanted his code to calm down; he hated feeling like this. He slowly lowered into a crouch, mumbling that he was sorry, saying he wonât do it again, fingers in his hair.
Leo nearly dropped his pancakes. Hongbin had thought heâd been kidnapped. Leo felt an wholly unnecessary swell of guilt at the revelation. Was the other scared? It was natural to assume so, given Leo had just caught him mid-escape attempt. He quickly balanced the plate to the edge of his cluttered work desk and approached the other.
The smile slipped. Leo paused, watching Hongbin carefully. Perhaps⌠he was not simply scared of the situation - he was scared of Leo. âYou- You donât have to escape,â he tried softly. Imploring the other to understand his reasons would only make this whole thing worse. âI wonât keep you here, IâŚâ
He trailed off. Hongbin looked dejected, rather than scared now. And an apologyâŚÂ âNo. No, you have nothing to apologise for.â The carefully controlled blankness he usually fell back upon fractured. Leo frowned in concern.
He had been on low battery and yet he had still come to see him. How foolish he was. Yet Leo couldnât bring himself to tell him so. Not when Hongbin sat back down, curled in on himself as though heâd done something terrible. God, it worried him. Leo could not fully comprehend why it did, but a pang in his chest told him he did. Seeing Hongbin like this did not seem right.Â
Cautiously, like approaching a bird with broken wings that might try to fly away sensing danger, Leo made his way over to the sofa. He settled in front of Hongbin rather than sitting beside him; one hand hesitantly rest against Hongbinâs knee. He was frantic. Panicking. âStop. Please stop apologising,â There was little Leo could do but try to get his attention. âI was concerned. You- You should have looked after yourself before even thinking of coming to see me. I would have waited. But no. I cannot forgive you.â A smile appeared, almost as fragile as he felt and Hongbin looked in that moment. âI cannot forgive you when you did nothing wrong. Why must you be so harsh to yourself?â
Hongbinâs metal frame trembled with his coded emotion, his hands in his hair and tears on his cheeks. When he felt a hand on his knee, he flinched, just a little bit, and Hongbin slowly lowered his hands to look down at his knees, to see that Leo was now in front of him. He looked up into Leoâs eyes, but felt so guilty that he had to look away again. Heâd done a horrible thing; heâd worried his friend so much to the point that Leo was even worried now. But the question was, why did he feel so harsh on himself? He knew people of organic flesh could control their emotions, or hone them, or change them at will, sometimes, but Hongbin couldnât. The codes that ran through him he couldnât stop as soon as they were triggered. His hands trembling, he was told he hadnât done anything wrong, and Hongbinâs mouth opened to tell Leo why that just wasnât so, why Leo didnât understand, though Hongbin only ended up grimacing, tears in his eyes. His heart hurt, it truly did. As much as a synthetic heart could hurt. âI wanted to make you happy,â he eventually said, slowly plonking his butt on the floor. Once Leo had told him he wasnât angry or disappointed in him, the code began to quieten, and Hongbin was left with a more subdued sadness. He sniffled, wiping his cheeks. âI-- my code always-- always gets really overwhelming, when I make someone unhappy. Itâs just-- the way I was... programmed...â he looks down at Leoâs feet. He supposes Leo wouldnât know about the alien race that created him. How terrible they were, how afraid Hongbin was of them. âI-Iâm sorry I worried you.â
