i was trying to recommend the newsreader to a friend today and was struggling to come up with what to say, because i can say that it is fantastic queer and mental health representation and i can say that it has beautiful writing and cinematography and i can talk about the actors but at the end of the day the show isn’t about any of those things to me, and saying them like a checklist feels disingenuous and tokenistic because above all else it is just one of the most incredibly human stories i have ever come across — human in how fully realised the characters feel and live and move and struggle and how they themselves are not ABOUT their struggles either but simply are a person who is struggling but with so much more in their lives, too, and it is truly some of the best storytelling i have ever come across in any medium with its fantastic command over tension and visual storytelling but above all else its understanding that it is here to tell a story about people, first and foremost, as they are and as they are with each other, brutally honest with a depth that sometimes terrify me and THAT, at its core, is what a good story is about to me
