Subjunctive present is just wishes, desires, politeness, or unlikely things that are happening in the present or very near future.

Many times, this includes a polite request… which is instead of a command like hazlo “do it”, you would say quiero que lo hagas “I want you to do it”.

Subjunctive is often used for uncertainty and doubt or contrary to fact statements, and in the cases of polite requests you would use subjunctive when a simple command is too forceful or maybe impolite.

Explaining Subjunctive

Indefinites + subjunctive

Imperfect subjunctive is subjunctive that takes place in the past or in the future. It used to be divided into imperfect [not yet completed; aka past] subjunctive, and future subjunctive… but because language, they merged into the same tense, more or less.

Future subjunctive’s conjugations are now considered obsolete though they show up periodically in literature, or in contracts for “in the event of”.

Spain likes to use the imperfect subjunctive forms that end in -ase or -iese… Latin America prefers -ara and -iera.

The alternate forms go into the differences between imperfect and future subjunctive, but if you just want basic info, don’t worry about it just know that Spain likes one form and Latin America likes the other.

Imperfect subjunctive deals with subjunctive in the past; quiero que lo hagas becomes quería que lo hicieras “I wanted you to do it”. The same general rules apply, just that it’s happening in the past.

When it’s dealing with future, it’s more about uncertainty, contrary to fact statements, or hypothetical situations. That would be like si fuera presidente/presidenta “if I were president” and when you see it used like this, it usually requires the conditional to show up.

In other situations you’ll see as very doubtful or contrary to fact which would be like aunque fuera la verdad “even if that were the truth”. 

There’s a lot of “even if” or “even though” or “whenever / wherever / however” that shows up with subjunctive. For example pase lo que pase and viniera lo que viniera are both translated as “whatever happens” or “come what may”
