1206 was the founding of the Mongolian Empire, heralded by a great quriltai (assembly) held along the Onon and Kherlen rivers. Here the warlord Temüjin either took, or was confirmed, with the title of Chinggis Khan. According to Rashid al-Dīn, this was conferred upon him by the Shaman (and Chinggis' step-brother!) Kokochu, known also as Teb Tenggeri, who is pictured here. Teb Tenggeri's role in this matter is written out of the Secret History of the Mongols, where he is entirely a negative figure, and more attention is given to his death at the hands of Chinggis' brother Temüge. Presumably, it was a handy way to avoid the situation between the Holy Roman Emperor and the Pope, where the Popes liked to claim the sole authority to enthrone the Emperor (something the Emperors rather soon found very inconvenient).

Igor de Rachewiltz argued that the state's name, Yeke Monggol Ulus (Great Mongol State) was not taken until a few years later, after the start of the war against the Jin Dynasty. Prior to that it was just the Monggol Ulus
