Finally getting back into it after losing a lot of my Sims work earlier this awful year. Itâs a big project, but I love making monarchs and historical figures in CAS working from their portraiture, and Iâd really like to use Richard as a jumping-off point for European royalty. Since heâs the earliest English monarch we have a portrait of taken from life, I thought heâd be a good pick. Hadrian is probably best known for the wall bearing his name whose ruins still stand in northern England. His accomplishments extend well beyond that, though, and heâs one of the most fascinating and psychologically complex of Roman political leaders, as well as a well-regarded author. Despite monumental challenges in his personal life, he was hugely successful -- his reign was almost entirely peaceful, and he was one of the most mobile emperors, having visited almost his entire empire. I tried to reflect this in his strong thighs and bowed legs, since so much of his life would have been spent on horseback (speaking of which, donât forget to download my list of sliders!).
Outside his wall, Hadrian is probably best known for the impressive beard he sports in his statuary -- probably grown both out of his love of Greek culture and a desire to cover acne or pox scars -- which introduced a new fad into a society that had previously been obsessively clean-shaven. I hope I did it justice! Surprisingly, heâs also the only one of the first two centuries of Roman Emperors who is recorded as having dark hair; the rest were all fair and blonde. His bright gray eyes were also commented upon.
Besides his looks, heâs well-remembered for his tumultuous personal life, dominated by his intense relationship with the beautiful Greek youth Antinous -- Hadrian was exclusively homosexual at a time when limited bisexuality was the norm for upper class men -- and his unhappy marriage to Vibia Sabina, whom some believe was driven to suicide by his poor treatment of her. He also went through intense periods of melancholy during which he retreated into total solitude, and his behavior suggests he probably suffered from major depression or a bipolar spectrum disorder.

So, last night I was working on one of my CAS projects, HrĂłlfr, the Viking who invaded northern France and became the first Duke of Normandy (if you watch Vikings, you know him as the character Rollo). I liked the Sim I ended up with a lot, but he just wasnât my idea of HrĂłlfr at all, so instead of trashing him I decided to just make him a random Viking -- HrĂłlfr is gonna need some companions to help him pillage and steal from all those poor French villagers, after all! I also decided to make him a wife and gave them some cool Old Norse names (my boyfriend calls them Horny and Thrash-Slug). I went kind of wild with the skin details and makeup, gave them plenty of gold jewelry (all stolen, of course) and got what I think is a pretty cool-looking Viking warrior couple. Hopefully soon theyâll have a couple of kids to add to the household -- no point in taking land from those weak southern Christian bastards if you canât populate it, right?

King of the Franks and the Lombards, Emperor of the Romans

The most familiar portraits of Charlemagne depict him as an old man with a flowing mane of gray hair and a huge beard, but these all date from centuries after he lived and represent a later idealized version of him with little basis in reality. For my Sim-lemagne, I wanted to reflect the reality of his time, when most portraits of European rulers depicted them with neat bowl cuts, and while they sometimes had facial hair, it was usually short and neat.
I also wanted to use the fact that heâs one of the first rulers we have a contemporary physical description of. He was over 6 feet, hugely tall at a time when the average man was 5â˛7âł (get out your height sliders, ladies), and his biographers commented on his impressive size and slightly protruding belly, though examinations of his skeleton suggest he was fairly slender. We also know he was fair, typical for the Franks, the Germanic tribe he descended from.
As for his clothes, he preferred to dress in a way much simpler than his wealth and power might have allowed. He almost always wore a blue cloak and a sword, which I did my best with in his everyday outfit. His contemporary biographer, Einhard, said he always dressed in the traditional Frankish way and despised foreign clothes, though he allowed himself to dress in the Roman fashion twice when he was visiting there out of respect. He was also crowned Roman Emperor by the Pope in 800, so between those two things, for his formal outfit I decided to let the realism go a little bit and make him look like a kind of medieval take on a traditional Roman Emperor (which, hey, he pretty much was).
Dude had a huge family, complete with multiple wives and concubines and over a dozen children, so Iâll probably be working on those folks soon so you can give this poor guy a household.

**A note on the name: Charlieâs Sim name is Karl Arnulfing. Charlemagne is an honorific name given to him after his death that literally translates to âCharles the Greatâ in French. Charlie himself spoke an old dialect of German, and his personal name would have been Karl (or something close to it). While he wouldnât have had a last name in the modern sense, I gave him the surname Arnulfing since thatâs the name of the dynasty he came from (they all descended from a guy named Arnulf). His own descendants are known as Carolingians (Karolinger in German) after the Latin form of his name, Carolus, so thatâs the last name Iâll give his children.
