Introduction to Biointensive Gardening Join sibling team Bonnie and Harry Wykman from Black Earth Education to explore this ecologically sound and comprehensive approach to intensive food production.
The biointensive method of food production was developed from a synthesis of French intensive methods and biodynamics, and has been developed and researched by staff at Ecology Action for the past 30 years. The goal of Ecology Action is to develop a method of intensive food production that provide people with adequate calories and nutrients while conserving land and resources. It was developed in response to the increasing human population, peak oil, food insecurity and declining arable land. As a result, one of its priorities is to maximise food production in a small space while building, rather than depleting soil fertility.
The workshop will cover the theory and history of the biointensive gardening method and practical demonstrations in skills and techniques including: * planning your garden for high yields * basic seedling raising techniques for robust healthy plants * garden bed preparation and soil fertility (incl. composting) * planting techniques for efficient gardening and high yields
Your Teachers Bonnie and Harry are founding members of the Black Earth Workers’ Collective, a worker owned and managed not-for-profit business dedicated to creating self-managed, ecologically sound livelihoods. Both are experienced compost-makers, gardeners and educators. Over the past 8 years they have collaborated on permaculture design and edible landscaping projects for domestic, government and commercial clients, the coordination of a community gardens and the delivery of workshops centred on permaculture design, food gardening and wholefood cooking and fermentation. Most recently Bonnie and Harry have completed an internship with Jodi Roebuck of Taranaki, Aoteroa New Zealand to further develop their skills and interest in biointensive gardening, a method of gardening focused on truly sustainable production of human needs, especially nutrition. Jodi Roebuck is the only teacher offering courses in biointensive gardening in Australasia to have trained with John Jeavons at Ecology Action, California where the biointensive method was and is being developed.

Gasp Imagine a world in which the air we breathe is just another commodity like food and fuel. Something that can be bought and sold according to market forces. How much do you think you’d have to breathe?
This was the darkly comic premise on which Ben Elton based his first play, the hilarious and critically acclaimed satirical comedy Gasping.
The play was first produced in 1990 at the Theatre Royal Haymarket in London’s West End. It starred Hugh Laurie and ran for a triumphant year and a half. Now Ben Elton has revisited his original play and re-imagined it for a new century and a new country. This major rewrite relocates the story to an Australia grown giddy on the resources boom. It’s now called Gasp!. And it’s as relevant and as hil‘air’ious as ever.

DUSKY The toast of the UK underground at the Home of the Underground. On Friday the 14th of November, Dusky will take you on a dark excursion through warehouse techno and real, bass-heavy house – ducking in and out of roomfuls of vintage garage.
Since their arrival in 2011, Alfie and Nick (DUSKY) have delivered critically acclaimed productions, none more so than their EP late last year, Careless (which, PS, is anything but).
Cliff notes: pounding with a big room bass riff and that signature garage-tinted house sound. The EP epitomizes the movement of sickeningly talented, uber-young UK producers who make you wonder what the f*ck you have done with your life.
