i’m going to let you in on a little secret: everyone ships themselves with someone. sometimes it’s platonic and sometimes it’s romantic. to some extent or another, actively or passively, that is a thing that almost all people do and they’re fucking lying if they say otherwise. have romantic/sexual fantasies about a character? bam, that’s self shipping.

even people that think reader inserts are “cringe” often lack the self-awareness that often their favourite ship is their favourite ship because of how hard they project themselves onto/identify with one of the people in the ship. (i don’t think that’s a bad thing to prefer ships and for reader inserts not to be your thing, i enjoy and write for both, i just think it’s hypocritical to mistreat someone and make fun of them on that basis.)

all fanfiction is wish fulfilment, people that say otherwise are bullshit. “cringe” is bullshit. i’m only tangentially aware of the community you’re talking about, but good gd, who cares? ship yourself with whomever! you’re hurting no one! who cares?? anyone that cares and would call you names or make fun of you is a fucking loser. THAT’S what real cringe is, shitting on people innocently committing the crime of enjoying something.

And I had people later tell me “You know I support you, just… I didn’t want anyone to think I was.” First off, I DON’T know you support me. Not if you refuse to, for one day, change nothing about your life to show it. Second off… why is that such a terrifying thought to you?

I remember before rainbows were a “gay thing”. They were everywhere. Church walls next to arks. School walls next to sunshine faces. People have VOLUNTARILY abandoned every other use. I have HEARD PEOPLE SAY they just couldn’t use rainbows anymore because people would think of “gay stuff.”

So I know this is a joke, and a stolen one at that, but you’ve done this to yourselves. If someone is so terrified of being perceived as queer that they will INSTANTLY abandon something they like if it has queer germs on it now or something, then they don’t deserve refracted light.
