Just give a listen, it’s totally worth the 3 minutes and 2 seconds…close your eyes and relax
The death of Sherlock Holmes in 1893, as written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle in "The Final Problem," was a pivotal moment in literary history. Holmes, the brilliant detective, met his supposed end at the Reichenbach Falls in Switzerland, locked in a deadly struggle with his nemesis, Professor Moriarty.
Conan Doyle intended this as a definitive conclusion to Holmes' adventures, allowing him to focus on other literary pursuits, such as historical novels. However, the reaction from fans was unprecedented.
The story was published in 'The Strand Magazine', which had become synonymous with Holmes' tales. The backlash was immediate and intense—over 20,000 readers canceled their subscriptions, nearly driving the magazine to financial ruin.
The staff referred to Holmes' death as "the dreadful event," highlighting the profound impact on the publication. Legend has it that some Londoners even wore black armbands in mourning, though this claim remains unverified. The public's attachment to Holmes was so strong that protests and letters flooded in, demanding his return.
Conan Doyle resisted the pressure for nearly a decade, but in 1901, he published 'The Hound of the Baskervilles', set before Holmes' death. Finally, in 1903, Holmes was resurrected in "The Adventure of the Empty House," explaining that he had faked his death. This period, known as "The Great Hiatus," remains a fascinating chapter in literary history, showcasing the power of storytelling and the deep connection between readers and fictional characters. Holmes' return not only revitalized 'The Strand Magazine' but also cemented his legacy as one of the most enduring figures in literature.
